Write something."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/\">English Wikipedia<\/a> may have <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Special:Statistics\">two million articles<\/a>, but it&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wikipedia:Wikipedia_is_a_work_in_progress\">so far off finished<\/a> it&#8217;s ridiculous.<\/p>\n<p>We had a quite notable recent <a href=\"http:\/\/insidehighered.com\/news\/2007\/10\/29\/wikipedia\">classroom experiment<\/a> in <a href=\"http:\/\/arstechnica.com\/news.ars\/post\/20071030-prof-replaces-term-papers-with-wikipedia-contributions.html\">assigning students missing Wikipedia articles to write<\/a>. Dig <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/w\/index.php?title=Deforestation_during_the_Roman_period&#038;oldid=94219478\">this<\/a> first edit!<\/p>\n<p>Writing a new article that will stick really isn&#8217;t hard: a few paragraphs, some references and some indication that there&#8217;s a reason to care will do the trick. (Go on, stretch yourself beyond <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brokenfrontier.com\/lowdown\/details.php?id=690\">web comics<\/a>.) Anyone with an hour or two can produce something well worth keeping with <a href=\"http:\/\/scholar.google.com\/\">Google Scholar<\/a>. If you have access to a university library, it&#8217;s ridiculously easy.<\/p>\n<p>Rather than just telling your students &#8220;go write something,&#8221; set them loose on a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Category:Red_list\">list of red links<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Category:Wikipedia_requested_articles\">requested articles<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Category:Wikipedia_missing_topics\">missing articles<\/a> or the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Missing_encyclopedic_articles\">missing articles project<\/a>. Discussion on WikiEN-L suggested Gaelic footballers, Indian and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/User:Shimgray\/South_Africa\">South African<\/a> politicians (indeed, politicians from anywhere that isn&#8217;t the US or Europe), biographies from before the twentieth century (check any public domain biographical dictionary, particularly ones not in English), every scientist in a prominent national academy &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>(Don&#8217;t forget to tell the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wikipedia:School_and_university_projects\">school and university projects list<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>Also: add <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wikipedia:Red_link\">red links<\/a> as you potter about the wiki. Red links encourage contributors. We&#8217;re now <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wikipedia_talk:Featured_article_candidates#Removing_red_link_hate_as_a_FAC_requirement\">saying so expressly<\/a> at <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wikipedia:Featured_article_candidates\">FAC<\/a>.
