CME, who offered the second US-regulated Bitcoin futures contract, think the idea is terrible and have no plans to offer such a thing in the foreseeable future. This all will work out swimmingly when Ethereum goes <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2018\/05\/13\/ethereum-casper-only-has-to-work-well-enough-worse-is-better-in-action\/\">proof-of-stake<\/a> and everything about the economics of ETH is decided by the <a href=\"https:\/\/etherscan.io\/accounts\/a\">biggest holders,<\/a> who got that way in an <a href=\"https:\/\/prestonbyrne.com\/2018\/04\/23\/on-ethereum-security\/amp\/\">incredibly centralised presale.<\/a> Good thing it&#8217;s not a security.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/twitter.com\/anguschampion\/status\/1035171349680009218<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Coincidentally, Bitfinex&#8217;s hosting provider <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ButtCoin\/status\/1035559070546190339\">restarted their trade matching engine<\/a> <em>just<\/em> as the CME futures contract was expiring! What are the odds?<\/p>\n<p>The Venezuelan Petro turns out to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-cryptocurrency-venezuela-specialrepor\/special-report-in-venezuela-new-cryptocurrency-is-nowhere-to-be-found-idUSKCN1LF15U\">unobtainable, as well as untradeable.<\/a> There&#8217;s no evidence this was anything other than a scam to get hard currency from the sort of investors that even other crypto investors think are a bit thick. This story is a great read. The perfect cryptocurrency, in every regard!<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2018\/08\/28\/news-cftc-crypto-win-bitcoin-power-use-nicehash-huobi-public-listing-indiegogo-goes-crypto-cosbycoin-comes-true\/\">blockchain conference in North Korea<\/a> is apparently a thing that is happening! A journalist at an unnamed major news outlet who write about money emailed them, asking if he could come. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alejandro_Cao_de_Ben%C3%B3s\">Alejandro Cao de Ben\u00f3s,<\/a> a Special Representative of the Foreign Ministry of North Korea, emailed back saying that no press was allowed. I have also been told by the loved one that I can&#8217;t apply to go either. How annoying.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2018\/03\/04\/ico-tokens-wont-fix-journalism-either-and-certainly-not-with-company-scrip\/\">Civil ICO<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 who aspire to <em>save journalism,<\/em> with ICO tokens\u00a0\u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/digiday.com\/media\/associated-press-signs-journalism-blockchain-startup-civil\/\">has hooked up with the Associated Press!<\/a> Civil clients will get an AP feed cheap. Civil goes on at length about how this hooks into its weird blockchain journalism ideas\u00a0\u2014 and the AP just sees it as a marketing deal: &#8220;finding new customers for the AP\u2019s journalism was its primary interest in Civil.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>CSIRO is conned into another IBM pilot programme, to make an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csiro.au\/en\/News\/News-releases\/2018\/New-blockchain-based-smart-legal-contracts\">Australian National Blockchain.<\/a> Surely a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Broadband_Network#End_user_issues\">worthy successor<\/a> to the National Broadband Network!<\/p>\n<p>Despite hackers <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2018\/08\/04\/news-bitfi-hack-court-of-the-blockchain-bitforex-fake-volume-luxe-for-ethereum-domain-names-crypto-mining-still-environmentally-awful-bitcoin-still-useless-tether\/\">rooting the device<\/a> \u2014 giving them complete control over it \u2014 BitFi still <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptovest.com\/news\/interview-bitfi-explains-drama-behind-allegedly-hacked-wallets\/\">claimed their wallet was &#8220;unhackable&#8221;,<\/a> because the private key to your cloud wallet only &#8220;persists in memory for a short amount of time &#8230; if your device is seized or stolen, an attacker or whoever takes it is going to find nothing in memory.&#8221; So it&#8217;s unfortunate that the device doesn&#8217;t clear its memory on reboot, and that <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/spudowiar\/status\/1035269363903946755\">rooting the device doesn&#8217;t clear the memory either.<\/a> BitFi has now <a href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/bitfi-closes-wallet-bounty-program-removes-unhackable-from-branding\">removed the word &#8220;unhackable&#8221;<\/a> from its marketing, and closed its bug bounty programme.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">If it&#39;s left on, and has the phrase entered since it was started up, cold boot will work.<\/p>\n<p>If it&#39;s powered off, an &quot;evil maid&quot; payload can be installed in a few seconds that will steal the information next time it&#39;s entered.<\/p>\n<p>Neither attack requires opening the case.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Ryan Castellucci \ud83c\udfe0 (@ryancdotorg) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ryancdotorg\/status\/1035307961084719106?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 30, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In another top-notch university liaison with the blockchain industry\u00a0\u2014 also at Oxford, like Sa\u00efd&#8217;s, which I covered <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2018\/08\/31\/said-business-school-presents-the-astounding-blockchain-of-the-future-and-not-the-mundane-one-of-the-present\/\">yesterday<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bill_Roscoe\">Bill Roscoe<\/a> at University College Oxford literally promises <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/university-college-oxford-launches-blockchain-research-centre-842602945.html\">&#8220;green mining technology&#8221;<\/a> from the new <a href=\"https:\/\/blockchain.univ.ox.ac.uk\/\">University College Oxford Blockchain Research Centre.<\/a> The industry funding is largely from Chinese local governments via <a href=\"https:\/\/chieftin.org\/\">Chieftin,<\/a> the fintech startup he runs with his past student, BangDao Chen. This all seems completely above-board and transparent\u00a0\u2014 they appear to have done this as properly as they can\u00a0\u2014 it&#8217;s just a pity that it&#8217;s the computing equivalent of your university being sponsored by an unusually well-funded homeopathy organisation. CoinBase are publicising a survey revealing that <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.coinbase.com\/the-rise-of-crypto-in-higher-education-81b648c2466f\">18% of students buy cryptos!!<\/a>\u00a0Note how CoinBase don&#8217;t give any of the survey sample details, nor the precise question wording. The survey was run by Qriously. They run self-selecting surveys \u2014 not statistically valid\u00a0\u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qriously.com\/how-qriously-works\/\">as phone ads<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 self-selected, from a sample in serious need of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sampling_bias#Statistical_corrections_for_a_biased_sample\">correction,<\/a> and with no validation that anyone is who they claim to be. The other favoured trick is to run them on Pollfish, which is similarly self-selected and not validated.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a great paper from September 2017, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dnb.nl\/en\/news\/dnb-publications\/dnb-working-papers-series\/dnb-working-papers\/Workingpapers2018\/dnb373270.jsp\">&#8220;What Drives Bitcoin Adoption By Retailers&#8221;<\/a> by Nicole Jonker, which G. C. Pieters recently <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ProfPieters\/status\/1016797354849161216\">tweeted<\/a> about. De Nederlandsche Bank surveyed online retailers at the end of 2016, asking the same questions of those who accepted Bitcoin and those who didn&#8217;t. Only 2% accepted cryptos at the end of 2016\u00a0\u2014 compared to 21% accepting cash on delivery.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">42% of the accepting retailers received no payments in crypto at all, &amp; for 85% it was less than 5% of all their revenues!! This is consistent with anecdotes that say that people really aren&#39;t using Bitcoin and the like to purchase things, even if they have the option. The book on Theranos, <em>Bad Blood<\/em> by John Carreyou, is <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2N9hcUu\">99p on Kindle UK<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2PqaTtc\">$1.29 on Kindle US<\/a> today. This book is also a cracking read. Not crypto, but crypto followers will find a lot of the public relations shell games <em>eerily familiar.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Quinn DuPont&#8217;s book <em>Cryptocurrencies and Blockchains<\/em> is finally available for pre-order on Amazon (<a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2Prauql\">US<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2C7DscR\">UK<\/a>), for release in December. This should be good.<\/p>\n<p>The Economist&#8217;s Technology Quarterly pull-out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.economist.com\/printedition\/2018-09-01\">came out yesterday,<\/a> and it&#8217;s a crypto special. This is good and worth reading, and namedrops me a couple of times. In print!
