(And the prospect of black on the balance sheet.)<\/p>\n<p>What I can&#8217;t find is any mention of the other \u2014 completely separate and unrelated \u2014 Kodak-branded cryptocurrency folly: the <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2018\/01\/10\/kodak-pt-2-photographers-cant-sell-kodakcoin-and-the-kodak-kashminer-is-a-bitcoin-mining-scam\/\">Kodak KashMiner,<\/a> a foray into Bitcoin cloud mining scams.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s no evidence that Spotlite\u00a0\u2014 the licensee promoting this scheme \u2014 got a single customer, nor that they had any AntMiners other than the one they brought to <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2018\/01\/10\/kodaks-ico-for-a-stock-photo-site-that-doesnt-exist-yet-but-the-stock-price\/\">CES in January.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Nor is there evidence that &#8230; there was ever a product in the first place.<\/p>\n<p>But the website is <em>amazing.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2018\/01\/10\/kodaks-ico-for-a-stock-photo-site-that-doesnt-exist-yet-but-the-stock-price\/kodak-kashminer\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3993\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3993\" src=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/kodak-kashminer.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" srcset=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/kodak-kashminer.jpg 660w, https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/kodak-kashminer-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Roll up, roll up \u2014 rent our money-printing machines!<\/h3>\n<p>But first, let&#8217;s look back to the January launch of both KodakOne\/KodakCoin and of the KashMiner, at the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.<\/p>\n<p>Spotlite America has been a Kodak brand licensee <a href=\"https:\/\/www.furniturelightingdecor.com\/spotlite-usa-enters-brand-licensing-agreement-kodak\">since 2016<\/a> \u2014 they sell Kodak-branded <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kodakledlighting.com\/\">LED lights<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kodakpowerdistribution.com\/\">solar power equipment.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>(They don&#8217;t appear to be related to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spotlite.me\/\">musical phone app<\/a> also called &#8220;Spotlite.&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>Spotlite showed up at CES, offering to charge you $3400 to rent \u2014 not buy \u2014 a Kodak KashMiner for two years.<\/p>\n<p>They spoke of installing the miners at Kodak in Rochester, New York, and running them off spare capacity from Kodak\u2019s in-house coal-fired power plant. They would <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/kodak-miner-returns.jpg\">send you <em>half<\/em> the proceeds,<\/a> keeping the other half.<\/p>\n<p>This is about as good an idea as cloud mining ever has been \u2014 every instance I&#8217;ve ever seen has been a scam. (See <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/table-of-contents\/\">chapters 4 and 5<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/book\/\">the book.<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2018\/01\/10\/kodak-pt-2-photographers-cant-sell-kodakcoin-and-the-kodak-kashminer-is-a-bitcoin-mining-scam\/kodak-miner-returns\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4041\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4041\" src=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/kodak-miner-returns.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/kodak-miner-returns.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/kodak-miner-returns-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/kodak-miner-returns-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/kodak-miner-returns-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Spotlite CEO Halston Mikail told <a href=\"https:\/\/eu.usatoday.com\/story\/tech\/columnist\/2018\/01\/15\/kodak-bitcoin-miner-what-dubious-scheme-says-technologys-misdirection\/1033669001\/\">USA Today:<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Your $3,400 becomes $9,000,&#8221; he said, adding that Spotlite benefits from low electricity costs of just 4 cents per kilowatt from a local coal-fired plant.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And he told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buzzfeed.com\/ryanmac\/experts-call-kodaks-bitcoin-mining-scheme-a-scam\">BuzzFeed:<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cKodak has multiple plans in the blockchain industry,\u201d said Halston Mikail, an executive at Spotlite America, whose company licensed Kodak\u2019s name for the bitcoin mining device. \u201cWe have a team that\u2019s well experienced,\u201d he added, before noting that Spotlite does not make the device and buys them from an unnamed Chinese manufacturer.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If there&#8217;s one thing <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2018\/04\/07\/saifedean-ammous-the-bitcoin-standard-the-austrian-case-for-bitcoin\/\">Saifedean Ammous<\/a> and I can agree on, it&#8217;s the quality of this offering:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Allowing for the 15% difficulty adjustment, the actual returns on the Kodak miner will be $2,457 on a $3,400 investment. <br \/>SFYL but please be sure to take a selfie with your non-Kodak cellphone camera while holding the miner for the Ultimate Kodak Moment!<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Saifedean.com (@saifedean) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/saifedean\/status\/950884829435965440?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 10, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Where&#8217;s Kodak?<\/h3>\n<p>Eastman Kodak&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kodak.com\/US\/en\/corp\/Press_center\/From_instant_print_cameras_to_cryptocurrency_Kodak_has_the_visually_creative_in_mind_at_CES_2018\/default.htm\">CES 2018 press release<\/a> mentions all manner of licensees, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kodak.com\/corp\/Press_center\/KODAK_and_WENN_Digital_Partner_to_Launch_Major_Blockchain_Initiative_and_Cryptocurrency\/default.htm\">KodakOne and KodakCoin<\/a> \u2014 but not the KashMiner. Kodak just &#8230; don&#8217;t talk about it.<\/p>\n<p>The terms &#8220;KashMiner,&#8221; &#8220;Hashpower,&#8221; &#8220;Spotlite,&#8221; or even &#8220;Bitcoin&#8221; can&#8217;t be found in Kodak&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sec.gov\/Archives\/edgar\/data\/31235\/000156459018005857\/kodk-10k_20171231.htm\">10-K for Q4 2017<\/a> nor their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sec.gov\/Archives\/edgar\/data\/31235\/000156459018012561\/kodk-10q_20180331.htm\">10-Q for Q1 2018<\/a> \u2014 nor, indeed, in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sec.gov\/cgi-bin\/browse-edgar?action=getcompany&amp;CIK=0000031235&amp;owner=exclude\">any filings for Eastman Kodak,<\/a> nor in their <a href=\"https:\/\/seekingalpha.com\/article\/4156980-eastman-kodaks-kodk-ceo-jeff-clarke-q4-2017-results-earnings-call-transcript?part=single\">Q4 2017<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/seekingalpha.com\/article\/4171940-eastman-kodaks-kodk-ceo-jeff-clarke-q1-2018-results-earnings-call-transcript?part=single\">Q1 2018<\/a> earnings calls, nor (except &#8220;Bitcoin&#8221;) for <em>any<\/em> company in the <a href=\"https:\/\/searchwww.sec.gov\/EDGARFSClient\/jsp\/EDGAR_MainAccess.jsp\">SEC EDGAR full text search.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Kodak seemed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buzzfeed.com\/ryanmac\/experts-call-kodaks-bitcoin-mining-scheme-a-scam\">caught unaware<\/a> in the January publicity flurry:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Nicholas Rangel, a Kodak spokesperson, refused to answer questions about the calculations that went into the marketing brochure, which featured an all-caps tagline \u201cIN MATH WE TRUST.\u201d He said that the company would make an official announcement about the program in two to three weeks and also declined to say what company actually made the machines.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That &#8220;official announcement&#8221; never did come out.<\/p>\n<p>I contacted the Kodak <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kodak.com\/corp\/press_center\/default.htm\">press office,<\/a> asking if that announcement ever happened. Rangel quickly got back to me:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Thank you for your inquiry. We did not make an announcement, the KashMiner is not a Kodak licensed product.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I&#8217;m suspecting Spotlite paid their own way into CES, dragging along an AntMiner S9 with a &#8220;KashMiner&#8221; sticker on the side, and butted in on the official KodakOne publicity\u00a0\u2014 and Eastman Kodak were left wondering what on earth their licensee was thinking.<\/p>\n<h3>Lorem ipsum Kodak sit amet<\/h3>\n<p>But \u2014 there&#8217;s a website! <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kodakhashpower.com\/\">kodakhashpower.com<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20180630181446\/http:\/\/www.kodakhashpower.com\/\">archive<\/a>). And it&#8217;s a doozy.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kodakhashpower.com\/terms-and-conditions\/\">Terms and Conditions<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20180630181719\/http:\/\/www.kodakhashpower.com\/terms-and-conditions\/\">archive<\/a>) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kodakhashpower.com\/privacy-policy\/\">Privacy Policy<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20180630181730\/http:\/\/www.kodakhashpower.com\/privacy-policy\/\">archive<\/a>) pages are <i>literally<\/i> <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lorem_ipsum\">lorem ipsum,<\/a> standard graphic designer filler text. <em>Duis aute irure dolor<\/em> \u2014 &#8220;but the pain of doing your homework&#8221; \u2014 as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/De_finibus_bonorum_et_malorum\">Cicero<\/a> didn&#8217;t quite put it.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2018\/07\/11\/kodak-pt-7-kodak-kashminer-the-bitcoin-cloud-mining-scheme-that-never-existed\/kodakhashpower-terms-and-conditions\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8603\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8603\" src=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/kodakhashpower-terms-and-conditions.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"433\" srcset=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/kodakhashpower-terms-and-conditions.png 1028w, https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/kodakhashpower-terms-and-conditions-300x217.png 300w, https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/kodakhashpower-terms-and-conditions-768x554.png 768w, https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/kodakhashpower-terms-and-conditions-1024x739.png 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>None of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kodakhashpower.com\/registration\/subscriber\/\">KodakHashPower subscriber signup page,<\/a> the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kodakhashpower.com\/login\/subscriber\/\">subscriber login page,<\/a> the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kodakhashpower.com\/registration\/dealer\/\">dealer signup page<\/a> nor the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kodakhashpower.com\/login\/dealer\/\">dealer login page<\/a> work in Firefox or Chrome.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a page of their miner offerings \u2014 for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kodakhashpower.com\/store\/miners\/bitcoin\/\">Bitcoin<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kodakhashpower.com\/store\/miners\/litecoin\/\">Litecoin<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kodakhashpower.com\/store\/miners\/ethereum\/\">Ethereum<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kodakhashpower.com\/store\/miners\/dash\/\">Dash<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kodakhashpower.com\/store\/miners\/blake\/\">BLAKE-256<\/a>. Each is illustrated with<span class=\" UFICommentActorAndBody\"><span data-ft=\"{&quot;tn&quot;:&quot;K&quot;}\"><span class=\"UFICommentBody\"> literally the same promotional AntMiner S9 photo, with different labels Photoshopped onto it.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2018\/07\/11\/kodak-pt-7-kodak-kashminer-the-bitcoin-cloud-mining-scheme-that-never-existed\/kodak-miners\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8610\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8610\" src=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/kodak-miners.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"2190\" height=\"361\" srcset=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/kodak-miners.png 2190w, https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/kodak-miners-300x49.png 300w, https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/kodak-miners-768x127.png 768w, https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/kodak-miners-1024x169.png 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2190px) 100vw, 2190px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There do exist ASIC miners for all these hashing algorithms, from various manufacturers \u2014 but the only one that looks like an AntMiner is an AntMiner.<\/p>\n<p>The photo isn&#8217;t even Spotlite&#8217;s \u2014 it&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.bitmain.com\/cn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/%E7%9F%BF%E6%9C%BA%E5%9B%BE.jpg\">an official Bitmain promotional photo,<\/a> as featured on their <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.bitmain.com\/cn\/antminer\/%E8%9A%82%E8%9A%81%E7%9F%BF%E6%9C%BAs9%E6%B5%8B%E8%AF%84.html\">blog post<\/a> describing the S9:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2018\/07\/11\/kodak-pt-7-kodak-kashminer-the-bitcoin-cloud-mining-scheme-that-never-existed\/bitmain-official-antminer-s9-photo\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8624\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8624\" src=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/bitmain-official-antminer-s9-photo.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"417\" srcset=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/bitmain-official-antminer-s9-photo.jpg 912w, https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/bitmain-official-antminer-s9-photo-300x250.jpg 300w, https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/bitmain-official-antminer-s9-photo-768x640.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>KashMiner under the Spotlite<\/h3>\n<p>I tried calling the number, 1-866-HASHPWR (1-866-427-4797), at various times of day. It&#8217;s always rung out and offered to let me leave a message, though not saying who the company was.<\/p>\n<p>Mikail <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/technology-42630136\">told the BBC<\/a> that KashMiner already had more customers than they could handle:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>But anybody hoping to join the gamble would have to wait, as capacity is already sold out, Mr Mikail added.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;At this time we have 80 miners, and we expect another 300 to arrive shortly. There is a big pile-up of demand,&#8221; he said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Don&#8217;t worry if the price should happen to crash horribly between January and, say, July:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Bitcoin is notoriously volatile and some analysts fear its value could crash, resulting in a loss for those who had paid up-front for mining capacity.<\/p>\n<p>But Mr Mikail said the rigs could be put to work on other tasks if Bitcoin faltered.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>You could use them to prop up a table leg, or as a particularly noisy space heater, or to bludgeon ICO spammers.<\/p>\n<p>In the end, there&#8217;s zero evidence that KashMiner ever went beyond a CES booth and an unfinished website. It looks like it didn&#8217;t &#8230; <em>(puts sunglasses on)<\/em> &#8230; develop. <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=6YMPAH67f4o\">YEEEEAAAHHH!<\/a>)<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Update:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/technology-44845291\">BBC News<\/a> got onto the story as well, and succeeded in getting Halston Mikail on the phone. &#8220;Spotlite&#8217;s Halston Mikail said the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) had prevented the scheme from going ahead.
