{"id":7539,"date":"2018-06-01T22:49:49","date_gmt":"2018-06-01T22:49:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/?p=7539"},"modified":"2018-08-19T20:09:19","modified_gmt":"2018-08-19T20:09:19","slug":"the-mathcoins-decentralised-cryptocurrency-without-the-blockchain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2018\/06\/01\/the-mathcoins-decentralised-cryptocurrency-without-the-blockchain\/","title":{"rendered":"The mathcoins: decentralised cryptocurrency, without the blockchain?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Proof-of-work is a <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2018\/05\/22\/bitcoins-stupendous-power-waste-is-green-apparently-bad-excuses-for-proof-of-work\/\">horrifying disaster.<\/a> Proof-of-stake has been <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2018\/05\/13\/ethereum-casper-only-has-to-work-well-enough-worse-is-better-in-action\/\">six months away for years.<\/a> Bitcoin failed at most of its early promises.<\/p>\n<p>But can we get the tantalising promises of cryptocurrency \u2014 decentralised, censorship-resistant, fast, cheap, secure \u2014 without the headaches?<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a pile of approaches along these lines \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iota.org\/\">IOTA<\/a>, Nano (formerly <a href=\"https:\/\/raiblocks.net\/\">RaiBlocks<\/a>), <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hashgraph\">Hashgraph<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/maidsafe.net\/\">MaidSafe<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/emin-gun-sirer-unveils-simple-yet-powerful-consensus-protocol\/\">Snowflake\/Avalanche<\/a> family \u2014 that promise <em>new consensus mechanisms.<\/em> And many don&#8217;t even use a blockchain.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve been calling these the &#8220;mathcoins.&#8221; They&#8217;re of varying quality, credibility and audacity of promises.<\/p>\n<p>You see a confusing page full of equations. Someone&#8217;s trying to sell you a token based on it. What do you do?<em> How does a non-mathematician judge these things?<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>The pitch<\/h3>\n<p>Mathcoins are marketed by someone waving a PDF at you and shouting &#8220;you can&#8217;t disprove my thesis \u2014 buy my coin!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A mathcoin will present a white paper full of equations\u00a0\u2014 written in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/LaTeX\">L<sub>A<\/sub>T<sup>E<\/sup>X,<\/a> or at least <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Computer_Modern\">Computer Modern,<\/a> to appear properly <a href=\"http:\/\/www.farmdoc.illinois.edu\/irwin\/research\/The_Case_for_Fake_LaTeX_Body_Feb%202018.pdf\">sciencey<\/a> \u2014 to justify their exciting new non-blockchain approach to the problems Bitcoin tried to solve.<\/p>\n<p>This is the blockchain space \u2014 so the product here is not the mathematics, but the <em>near-magical promises.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>Should I buy the token?<\/h3>\n<p>The price of a mathcoin is completely unrelated to the maths. Ignore the white paper.<\/p>\n<p>If a coin exists and someone&#8217;s trying to sell you on it \u2014 treat it as you would any altcoin pump. Pump-and-dump rings and <em>ridiculously<\/em> manipulated markets are standard in altcoins. Mathcoins are no exception.<\/p>\n<p>When the IOTA network was literally broken and not working at all for a few weeks in October 2017, the token price <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/maurelian_\/status\/922105134577958912\"><em>went up<\/em> 14%.<\/a> Because for trading purposes, it&#8217;s just another altcoin on an exchange.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Coming soon&#8221; is no reason to buy a token.<\/p>\n<h3>The species of mathcoin<\/h3>\n<p>A mathcoin will sometimes have credible computer scientists attached \u2014 <a href=\"http:\/\/hackingdistributed.com\/\">Emin G\u00fcn Sirer<\/a> advised Snowflake\/Avalanche \u2014 or at least had them take it seriously \u2014 Sirer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/jeffkauflin\/2018\/03\/13\/hedera-hashgraph-thinks-it-can-one-up-bitcoin-and-ethereum-with-faster-transactions\/\">politely critiqued<\/a> Hashgraph.<\/p>\n<p>Other times, it&#8217;ll attract widespread criticism of bad or obscurantist maths or cryptography \u2014 IOTA has been notorious for its <a href=\"https:\/\/spectrum.ieee.org\/tech-talk\/computing\/networks\/cryptographers-urge-users-and-researchers-to-abandon-iota-after-leaked-emails\">utter failure<\/a> to engage reasonably with outside security researchers.<\/p>\n<p>The maths falls into three broad groups:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Obviously broken idea<\/strong> \u2014 <em>e.g.<\/em>, nothing about IOTA works or makes sense.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Old idea, put forward as new<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 there&#8217;s a lot of recycled ideas, or someone comes up with something that looks clever that they haven&#8217;t done the reading on.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Actually new idea<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 Sirer: &#8220;I might be biased, but Snowflake\/Avalanche is in this category.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The teams&#8217; track record is critical:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Has delivered software before<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 this is rare\u00a0\u2014 few teams have a track record of delivery.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Has tried and failed so far<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 <em>e.g.<\/em>, MaidSafe has been in development hell since 2002.<\/li>\n<li><strong>This is their first attempt<\/strong> \u2014 typically someone with an idea, and someone collecting money to throw at the problem\u00a0\u2014 will often be hoping to buy in enough expertise.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Most teams are pushing a broken idea, and it&#8217;s their first attempt. A few are pushing an old idea, and it&#8217;s their first attempt.<\/p>\n<p>The products are one or more of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>No product yet<\/strong> \u2014 even with credible people involved, a non-mathematician shouldn&#8217;t worry too much about these until there&#8217;s something there.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Not decentralised at all<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 or not yet, coming soon, honest. <em>e.g.<\/em>, IOTA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Iota\/comments\/82hp99\/any_idea_when_the_coordinator_can_be_removed\/\">still has the central coordinator node<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 and no idea how they&#8217;ll remove it.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Doesn&#8217;t actually work<\/strong> \u2014 IOTA again, whose code <a href=\"https:\/\/shitcoin.com\/iota-cannot-be-used-for-iot-loss-of-funds-may-occur\/\">barely compiles,<\/a> and whose network falls over in a stiff breeze.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Far too many mathcoin white papers are the mathematical version of mad scientist monologues. &#8220;They said I was mad \u2014 but I\u2019LL SHOW THEM ALL!!&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>Watch the people involved<\/h3>\n<p>You&#8217;re not a mathematician, you&#8217;re not up on graph theory, you can&#8217;t tell whether a given paper is credible work \u2014 or if it&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Time_Cube\">Time Cube<\/a> in L<sub>A<\/sub>T<sup>E<\/sup>X.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2018\/02\/09\/news-hardware-wallet-hack-iota-review-mone-barrowman-419-ico-rokos-basilisk-on-the-blockchain\/iota-logo\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4912\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-4912\" src=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/iota-logo-300x139.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"139\" srcset=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/iota-logo-300x139.png 300w, https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/iota-logo.png 550w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>But you do know about the cryptocurrency and blockchain space\u00a0\u2014 and how the people behave. Do they behave in a professional manner, responding well to critique? Or do they react badly? Are they just pumping their token?<\/p>\n<p>IOTA has been notorious for this. Its leadership and community were volatile and abusive enough for it to get <a href=\"https:\/\/ftalphaville.ft.com\/2018\/04\/25\/1524628801000\/FUD--inglorious-FUD\/\">written up in the Financial Times.<\/a> The UCL Centre for Blockchain Technologies <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2018\/04\/28\/news-iota-cultists-ethereum-as-security-exchange-regulation-and-market-manipulation-wikipedia\/\">broke off relations with the IOTA Foundation<\/a> over their <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/matthew_d_green\/status\/965731647579664385\">threats<\/a> to security researchers.<\/p>\n<p>Other mathcoins will make it obvious that it&#8217;s all about the token price.
