Gox crashes Bitcoin a second time, and there&#8217;s more to come"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Which whale dumped enough Bitcoins to crash the price in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.trustnodes.com\/2018\/03\/07\/mt-gox-crashed-bitcoin-trustee-sold-bottom-blockchain-data-reveals\">December<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2018\/01\/16\/tis-just-a-seasonal-dip-watching-the-bitcoin-fire-from-a-safe-distance-what-just-happened\/\">January<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2018\/02\/03\/notes-from-the-crash-watching-the-bitcoin-pumps-and-dumps-live-on-gdax\/\">February<\/a>? It looks like it was the Mt. Gox exchange&#8217;s bankruptcy trustee, Nobuaki Kobayashi, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2018-03-07\/bitcoin-s-tokyo-whale-sold-400-million-and-he-s-not-done-yet\">selling the remaining coins to reimburse creditors.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Kobayashi has sold about $400 million worth of Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash \u2014 the latter being the free BCH that was <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2017\/09\/03\/the-bitcoin-versus-bitcoin-cash-split-what-it-means-and-what-you-should-do\/\">given to every BTC holder<\/a> as of 1 August \u2014 since late September, as he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mtgox.com\/img\/pdf\/20180307_report.pdf\">told a creditors&#8217; meeting<\/a> on Wednesday morning: 35,841 BTC sold for 38,231,389,537 JPY and 34,008 BCH sold for 4,756,654,806 JPY.<\/p>\n<p>The effect on the price was clearly visible. Reddit user riverflop <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/CryptoCurrency\/comments\/82ryay\/ive_mapped_the_exact_time_when_money_was\/\">posted this diagram<\/a> to \/r\/cryptocurrency, correlating the Mt. Gox Bitcoin selloffs with the Bitcoin price:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2018\/03\/09\/mt-gox-crashes-bitcoin-a-second-time-and-theres-more-to-come\/mt-gox-dumps-vs-price\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5556\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5556\" src=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/mt-gox-dumps-vs-price.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"428\" srcset=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/mt-gox-dumps-vs-price.png 1000w, https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/mt-gox-dumps-vs-price-300x128.png 300w, https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/mt-gox-dumps-vs-price-768x329.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It seems odd to have sold the coins via a public exchange \u2014 rather than via auction or via the murky over-the-counter (OTC) markets. Kobayashi maintains he did this to get the best price he could.<\/p>\n<p>Both <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MagicalTux\/status\/971891904286568450\">Mark Karpel\u00e8s,<\/a> proprietor of Mt. Gox at the time of its 2014 collapse, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/mtgoxinsolvency\/comments\/82ykgu\/re_the_dumpening\/\">Kraken exchange<\/a> directly advised the trustees not to sell the coins this way:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Kraken advised trustee against selling on market (<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/mjvytwAZ7J\">https:\/\/t.co\/mjvytwAZ7J<\/a>) and so did I.<\/p>\n<p>There isn&#39;t much I can do and I learned about the sale with everybody else when first reading the status report at the start of the creditors meeting.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Mark Karpel\u00e8s (@MagicalTux) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MagicalTux\/status\/971891904286568450?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 8, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The important takeaway is that Bitcoin is still <em>ridiculously<\/em> thinly traded, and trivial to manipulate. &#8220;Market cap&#8221; is still a completely bad and bogus number \u2014 here we see hundreds of millions of dollars in imaginary &#8220;value&#8221; disappearing because a single large holder needed to cash out.<\/p>\n<p>Tether apologists will claim that a hundred million tethers used for purchases couldn&#8217;t move a market cap the size of Bitcoin \u2014 but one lawyer repeatedly crashed the price with sales around that size.<\/p>\n<p>This news seems to have spooked the market, with the price dropping and the usual pumpers not bothering to push it up \u2014 because Kobayashi is a Bitcoin whale, but one who doesn&#8217;t care what the Bitcoin price is, only about recovering the claimed cash for the creditors.<\/p>\n<p>The fun part is that the sold bitcoins might make the creditors 100% whole in claimed JPY value \u2014 leaving a surplus.
