One Weird Trick <i>they<\/i> don\u2019t want you to know!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Crypto news site The Block has laid off a third of its staff.<\/p>\n<p>Larry Cermak, the site\u2019s former head of research, has been promoted to CEO by the new company board, which features Evgeny Gaevoy of crypto hedge fund Wintermute \u2014 a former Celsius market-maker, and current FTX creditor. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2023\/03\/31\/the-block-layoffs-leadership-shakeup\"><i>Axios<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>The move comes in the wake of The Block\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2022\/12\/13\/crypto-collapse-regulatory-altruism-at-ftx-sam-bankman-fried-arrested\/\">FTX funding scandal<\/a> \u2014 when the news came out in December 2022 that then-CEO and majority owner Mike McCaffrey had taken secret loans from Sam Bankman-Fried to fund the site. They also blame the general crypto winter.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2023\/03\/31\/the-block-fires-a-third-of-staff-larry-cermak-is-ceo-wintermutes-evgeny-gaevoy-joins-board\/chaparro-sbf-mccaffrey-cermak\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-25229\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-25229\" src=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/chaparro-sbf-mccaffrey-cermak.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"510\" height=\"315\" srcset=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/chaparro-sbf-mccaffrey-cermak.jpg 680w, https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/chaparro-sbf-mccaffrey-cermak-300x185.jpg 300w, https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/chaparro-sbf-mccaffrey-cermak-348x215.jpg 348w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 510px) 100vw, 510px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><small><i>Frank Chaparro, Sam Bankman-Fried, Mike McCaffrey, Larry Cermak<\/i><\/small><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>The Wintermute Blockage<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2023\/01\/06\/crypto-collapse-gemini-vs-dcg-new-york-charges-mashinsky-in-celsius-voyager-sale-troubles-silvergate-troubles-wintermute\/\">We wrote previously<\/a> of how Wintermute seemingly came from nowhere, <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2021\/09\/23\/dan-davies-lying-for-money-not-a-book-about-crypto-except-it-totally-is\/\">growing unusually quickly<\/a> from what they claimed was Gaevoy&#8217;s genius for \u201carbitrage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t worry too much about how the rise of Wintermute, and the excuses for it, are disconcertingly parallel to the story of FTX\/Alameda \u2014 particularly the nigh-magical arbitrage and how Gaevoy is a mathematical genius, much as SBF was. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/jeffkauflin\/2022\/12\/20\/with-sam-bankman-frieds-hedge-fund-gone-crypto-trading-firm-wintermute-emerges\/\"><i>Forbes<\/i><\/a><i>, 2022<\/i>]<\/p>\n<p>If we were sufficiently suspicious about crypto, we\u2019d think Wintermute was proceeding with its widely promoted plan to <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2023\/01\/06\/crypto-collapse-gemini-vs-dcg-new-york-charges-mashinsky-in-celsius-voyager-sale-troubles-silvergate-troubles-wintermute\/\">become the replacement for FTX\/Alameda<\/a>, and was lining up The Block as a suitable media promoter for the new enterprise.<\/p>\n<p>Gaevoy also appeared on The Block\u2019s podcast \u201cThe Scoop\u201d with Cermak and the site\u2019s director of news, Frank Chaparro, two days before the announcement, on March 29. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theblock.co\/post\/223582\/q12023-market-update\"><i>The Block<\/i><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20230329090210\/https:\/\/www.theblock.co\/post\/223582\/q12023-market-update\"><i>archive<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>But Gaevoy says that he isn\u2019t funding The Block <i>and<\/i> isn\u2019t being paid to be on the board. So we\u2019re sure it\u2019s all fine. [<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/EvgenyGaevoy\/status\/1641801036569640960\"><i>Twitter<\/i><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/CqwoF\"><i>archive<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<h3>Larry untethered<\/h3>\n<p>Cermak has been at The Block since it started in 2018. In 2018 and 2019, he was a rabid critic of Tether, Inc., its popular US dollar stablecoin of the same name, and its sister company, the Bitfinex crypto exchange. In fact, he was becoming a bit of a problem for Tether.<\/p>\n<p>In October 2018, Cermak <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2018\/10\/17\/bitfinexs-banking-problems-solved-snitches-get-stitches\/\">repeatedly leaked Bitfinex\u2019s banking information.<\/a> This led to the indictment of Bitfinex money mule <a href=\"https:\/\/amycastor.com\/tag\/reginald-fowler\/\">Reggie Fowler<\/a> and the New York Attorney General investigating Bitfinex and Tether \u2014 an investigation that <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2021\/02\/23\/new-york-settles-with-tether-a-wrist-slap-with-a-strong-leash\/\">cost the companies $18.5 million<\/a> and ended up with them being kicked out of New York state. [<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/lawmaster\/status\/1048515520482484224?lang=en\"><i>Twitter<\/i><\/a><i>, <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.vn\/dZSpU\"><i>archive<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>In March 2019, Cermak called the bitcoin community irrational and compared it to a cult, full of unrealistic expectations. In November 2019, Cermak boasted that he was unusual in the space because he had no holdings. \u201cI don\u2019t have any bitcoin. I don\u2019t have any Ethereum. I would probably want to, but I want to stay unbiased.\u201d [<a href=\"https:\/\/xamanap.medium.com\/q-a-with-larry-cermak-3b409a003d99\"><i>Medium<\/i><\/a><i>, <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.vn\/NW1bN\"><i>archive<\/i><\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/uUCclvmTMhs?t=183\"><i>YouTube<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>But by 2020 \u2014 when Mike McCaffrey had taken over at The Block \u2014 Cermak had started buying crypto and playing the DeFi markets. [<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/lawmaster\/status\/1305383267106000896\"><i>Twitter<\/i><\/a><i>, 2020, <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.vn\/meSuz\"><i>archive<\/i><\/a><i>; <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/lawmaster\/status\/1349689163667398656\"><i>Twitter<\/i><\/a><i>, 2021, <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/wip\/5uTP8\"><i>archive<\/i>]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Cermak also did a 180 on Tether. In a <a href=\"https:\/\/amycastor.com\/2021\/01\/14\/larry-cermak-and-bennett-tomlin-debate-tethers-solvency-transcript-with-notes\/\">podcast debate<\/a> in January 2021, Cermak said he believed Tether was fully backed \u201cwhen it comes to dollars in bank accounts\u201d and he thought the \u201cmajority of the funds are at Deltec in The Bahamas\u201d \u2014 though he presented no evidence to support these statements.<\/p>\n<p>Cermak used to have a column at The Block called \u201cSkeptic\u2019s Lens.\u201d He may need to look up the word \u201cskeptic.\u201d [<i>The Block, <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/UYEoe\"><i>archive<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<h3>McCaffrey the wonder kid<\/h3>\n<p>The Block\u2019s founder, Mike Dudas, had tried to keep the site going on venture funding \u2014 but it just wasn\u2019t self-sufficient. Mike McCaffrey, who was 24 at the time, took over as CEO in April 2020.<\/p>\n<p>A year later, in April 2021, McCaffrey led a buyout of The Block\u2019s seed investors. McCaffrey became the majority owner and sole director of the company.<\/p>\n<p>In December 2022, it came out that McCaffrey had <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2022\/12\/13\/crypto-collapse-regulatory-altruism-at-ftx-sam-bankman-fried-arrested\/\">taken three secret loans<\/a> from Sam Bankman-Fried \u2014 $27 million to keep The Block funded, and $16 million for an apartment in the Bahamas.<\/p>\n<p>Dudas said he had no knowledge that the funding came from Bankman-Fried, and that he had thought McCaffrey got the money from his wealthy family. Per Axios at the time, &#8220;With a mix of debt and cash from CEO Mike McCaffrey, the company returned to its investors 1.5 times the capital they paid in, plus interest.&#8221; [<a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2020\/04\/21\/the-block-names-new-ceo-crypto-site\/\"><i>Fortune<\/i><\/a><i>, 2020;<\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2021\/04\/16\/block-crypto-media\"> <i>Axios<\/i><\/a><i>, 2021;<\/i><em><a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2022\/12\/09\/the-block-founder-says-hes-exploring-ways-to-get-the-publication-into-trustworthy-hands\/\"> TechCrunch<\/a>, 2022<\/em>]<\/p>\n<p>McCaffrey stepped down from the Block \u2014 but Axios writes that McCaffrey is still a majority shareholder in the company, with all the rights of a majority shareholder.<\/p>\n<p>John Jay Ray, the CEO of FTX in bankruptcy, doesn&#8217;t seem to have come calling on McCaffrey to claw back the loan from SBF \u2014 which would have been criminally misappropriated funds that FTX customers\u00a0 likely have a claim on. It\u2019s possible that when Ray does come calling, McCaffrey may have interesting things to say about that funding arrangement.<\/p>\n<h3>Journalism in the crypto ice age<\/h3>\n<p>After a <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2020\/02\/24\/filming-in-vancouver-about-quadriga\/\">Vancouver<\/a> taxicab rant on the subject with <a href=\"https:\/\/amycastor.com\/2020\/02\/24\/were-in-vancouver-for-a-quadriga-documentary\/\">Amy<\/a>, who\u2019d just <a href=\"https:\/\/amycastor.com\/2020\/02\/20\/personal-update-i-left-my-job-at-modern-consensus\/\">quit Modern Consensus<\/a>, David wrote in 2020 how <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2020\/02\/28\/critical-journalism-in-the-crypto-ice-age\/\">you can\u2019t make money in crypto news<\/a> unless you become part of the crypto PR machine.<\/p>\n<p>Promote crypto, do whatever you can to lure more retail dollars into the space, and crypto companies will wave money in front of you.<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to crypto media, people will always wonder who your funders are and what you\u2019re doing for them. Way too often, they\u2019ll be quite correct to do so.<\/p>\n<p>With the Block having lost a third of its staff, we guess nobody will have the spare time to put the <a href=\"https:\/\/amycastor.com\/2023\/03\/30\/crypto-collapse-new-sam-bankman-fried-charge-binance-fallout-sec-sues-exchange-over-crypto-securities-how-signature-died\/\">lost archive of old stories<\/a> back up.
