She put forward motions in 2018 to <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2018\/02\/16\/a-bad-eu-motion-coming-up-for-vote-2017-2772rsp-distributed-ledger-technologies-and-blockchains-building-trust-with-disintermediation\/\">promote blockchain<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2018\/09\/06\/news-shapeshift-kyc-kraken-halifax-shutdown-eu-ico-rules-uk-blockchain-appg-mones-failed-ico-kodakone-ethereum-analytics-bitcoin-crash-laurie-penny-doing-the-crypto-cruise-walch-schuster-r\/\">promote ICOs<\/a>, and was putting together something in 2022 to promote NFTs. Anyway, Kaili got suspended from her Greek party and her EP party group in a stupendous corruption scandal involving lobbying for Qatar and several million euros in under-the-table cash payments. Her father was caught trying to flee with bags of cash. Kaili was arrested on 9 December and is still in detention as Belgian police sort out the mess. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/policy\/2022\/12\/09\/eu-lawmaker-kaili-suspended-from-party-in-corruption-scandal\/\"><i>CoinDesk<\/i><\/a><i>; <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lesoir.be\/482200\/article\/2022-12-09\/soupcons-de-corruption-par-le-qatar-la-vice-presidente-du-parlement-europeen-eva\"><i>Le Soir,<\/i><\/a><i> in French; <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lavanguardia.com\/internacional\/20221210\/8639999\/padre-vicepresidenta-eurocamara-detenido-huia-bolsas-dinero.html\"><i>La Vanguardia<\/i><\/a><i>, in Spanish; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/cash-missing-eva-kaili-arrest-warrant-points-several-million-euros-qatargate-payments-belgian-police-bribery-ring-francesco-giorgi\/\">Politico<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ekathimerini.com\/news\/1205460\/kaili-resorts-to-european-court-over-immunity\/\">EKathimerini<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ekathimerini.com\/news\/1205591\/decision-on-kailis-release-expected-on-mar-3\/\">EKathimerini<\/a><\/i>]<\/p>\n<p>The Finnish tax authority published the names of all citizens who earned more than \u20ac100,000 in 2021. Top of the list was a crypto dude who reported earnings of \u20ac133.7 million and says he just typed in &#8220;1337&#8221; for teh lulz. He now owes \u20ac46.2 million in taxes. He claims a \u201ctyping error.\u201d [<a href=\"https:\/\/yle.fi\/a\/3-12674462\"><i>Yle<\/i><\/a>, in Finnish]<\/p>\n<p>Turkish crypto exchange Thodex <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2021\/04\/30\/news-bitcoin-mining-is-not-green-miners-versus-programmers-gold-is-cleaner-than-bitcoin-exchanges-collapse-nft-forgery\/\">collapsed in April 2021<\/a> with $2 billion alleged value of cryptos missing, and CEO Faruk Fatih \u00d6zer promptly went on an urgent business trip. He was caught in Albania in August 2022. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theblock.co\/post\/166475\/ceo-of-collapsed-turkish-crypto-exchange-thodex-faces-extradition-from-albania-following-arrest\"><i>The Block<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>Andr\u00e9s Velasco on The Unbearable Uselessness of Crypto: &#8220;Thanks to FTX, the world may have woken up to the grim reality that crypto is a get-rich-quick lie, wrapped in hype, bobbing on an ocean of libertarian technobabble. The Bank of Nigeria is now going to try to bribe people to use it. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-10-25\/shunned-digital-currency-looks-for-street-credibility-in-nigeria\"><i>Bloomberg<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>Reports that the Bank of Nigeria is restricting ATM withdrawals to promote the eNaira seem to have been made up by CoinTelegraph. The actual reason is they&#8217;re running out of notes as they&#8217;re changing the currency. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbn.gov.ng\/Out\/2022\/CCD\/RevisedCashWithdrawal.pdf\"><i>Bank of Nigeria<\/i><\/a><i>, PDF<\/i>]<\/p>\n<p>The Bank of Nigeria would <i>like<\/i> more electronic payments. But that means the already-existing NIBSS payment system. The eNaira can&#8217;t scale, because it actually runs on a blockchain, or Hyperledger at least. The bank is talking to other companies about putting a different technology stack behind the eNaira \u2014 they\u2019re not so happy with Bitt and Hyperledger. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-02-21\/nigeria-seeks-new-tech-partners-to-revamp-enaira-central-bank-digital-currency\"><i>Bloomberg<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>The Bank of Korea finds that blockchain performance is hilariously unusable for a CBDC. Blockchains <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2021\/11\/08\/libra-shrugged-chapter-15-central-bank-digital-currencies\/\">inspired the current round of CBDCs<\/a> \u2014 and a huge driving force behind CBDC schemes was crypto number-go-up making banks take an unserious idea seriously \u2014 but you don\u2019t want to actually use a blockchain. [<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ledgerinsights.com\/bank-of-korea-performance-cbdc-blockchain\/\">Ledger Insights<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yna.co.kr\/view\/AKR20221107062300002\">Yonhap<\/a>, in Korean<\/em>]<\/p>\n<p>China\u2019s e-CNY (formerly DC\/EP) is being trialed in more provinces. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/tech\/article\/3193125\/china-digital-currency-beijing-expand-e-cny-trials-four-entire-provinces\"><i>SCMP<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>In what I think is a first for a CBDC, the e-CNY is finally adding offline payments. I think Tenpay and Alipay don&#8217;t do this one either. Not sure about the claims that you can make payments on your phone when it\u2019s out of power &#8230; [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.yicaiglobal.com\/news\/e-yuan-app-adds-payment-function-for-when-mobiles-are-offline-out-of-power\"><i>Yicai Global<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile the e-CNY app has been made available for public download for about a year, it continues to be an uphill battle to convince consumers to use it\u201d Officials insist the e-CNY is meant to replace notes and coins; the actual consumers just use it as a payment system like they do Tenpay and Alipay. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/tech\/tech-trends\/article\/3204585\/china-digital-currency-e-cny-wallet-borrows-alipay-and-wechat-pays-electronic-red-packet-feature-woo\"><i>SCMP<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>How is the Bahamas CBDC, the Sand Dollar actually doing? Not so well at financial inclusion, sadly. I\u2019m sure they\u2019ll get back to me in due course.<\/p>\n<p>There are assorted longer versions of the results \u2014 none of which contain this remarkable claim. And none of which answer how they conducted the survey or what the actual questions were. Mastercard does try hard to conflate crypto with all other non-cash payment channels in these reports. Here\u2019s the Q3 2022 earnings call where CEO Alan Lane admits that the regulators are just not going to let them do a retail stablecoin. \u201cIt\u2019s certainly not a technology issue.\u201d [<a href=\"https:\/\/seekingalpha.com\/article\/4547293-silvergate-capital-corporation-si-q3-2022-earnings-call-transcript\"><i>Seeking Alpha<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>The Australian Financial Review has compiled a list of Australian Dollar stablecoins. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.afr.com\/companies\/financial-services\/nab-creates-a-stablecoin-in-boost-for-digital-economy-20230117-p5cd8f\"><i>AFR<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<h3>Room C-H-1-O-C-H-11<\/h3>\n<p>BBC Research and Development is doing an internal consultation on how the BBC as an organisation can use Web3 and DLT.<\/p>\n<p>I originally said I&#8217;d be delighted to help, but I hadn&#8217;t read the consultation document I&#8217;d be &#8220;helping&#8221; with. if I had, I&#8217;d have offered to do it only for a swingeing fee.<\/p>\n<p>The deeply unserious \u201canalyst recommendations\u201d document isn&#8217;t public yet, but it really should be. Should the BBC issue NFTs, or perhaps even its own cryptocurrency? Amazing. Marketing copy cut&#8217;n&#8217;pasted straight into the organisation&#8217;s brain.<\/p>\n<p>The organisation made the usual error \u2014 they accepted the excuse \u201ctechnology!\u201d for the use of old tech to build a minimum viable product that\u2019s just sufficient to support various unregulated financial instruments.<\/p>\n<p>This is engineers making financial proposals to the organisation, not technological ones. I wonder to what extent they realise this.<\/p>\n<p>My recommendation was that the correct BBC approach to DLT would be for BBC Business News to investigate these ideas in depth as ongoing frauds. I also recommended an internal investigation as to how this document got this far, with a view to ensuring it never happened again.<\/p>\n<h3>Printhead<\/h3>\n<p>Tech journalist Casey Newton in his end of 2022 summary: [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2022\/12\/16\/23512588\/tech-platform-predictions-2023-facebook-twitter-moderation\"><i>The Verge<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>But all-out war between pro- and anti-crypto forces never really materialized, because the skeptics were just &#8230; right about everything!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>We were indeed, thank you.
