Starbucks\u2019 NFT programme is the latest. &#8220;What\u2019s more, the digital program could give customers a reason to care about NFTs.&#8221; Yeah, uh, OK. [<a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2022\/08\/03\/starbucks-to-unveil-its-web3-based-rewards-program-next-month\/\"><i>TechCrunch<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>Why did Starbucks want to do an NFT? Because Starbucks owner and CEO Howard Schultz thinks this will be a shiny object to distract his Generation Z workers from wanting to unionise. Yes, I know that nothing in that sentence isn&#8217;t dumb as hell. Remember that this is the guy who <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/File:Howard_Schultz_logo.jpg\">ran for President with a logo<\/a> that was his name with his name on it. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/n7ny7x\/starbucks-ceo-announces-nfts-to-workers-amid-union-drive\"><i>Vice<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>If all your apes are gone, OpenSea will freeze your NFTs! But \u201cif we don&#8217;t receive a police report within 7 days, we\u2019ll re-enable buying &amp; selling for the reported item. This change will help prevent false reports.\u201d [<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/opensea\/status\/1557487545876762625\"><i>Twitter<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>HitPiece launched in December 2021, selling NFTs of every record and artist on Spotify. The entire music industry found out about HitPiece in February 2022 and came down on it like a ton of bricks, and all HitPiece sites were disabled within about four hours. \u201cNow, six months later, HitPiece is back \u2014 and the company would like you to forget about that whole thing in February.\u201d No, I don\u2019t think I will. You can vote posts and comments up or down, and that\u2019s your \u201ckarma.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, there are enough hodlers at a high level that Reddit has been <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2020\/05\/15\/news-9-billion-tethers-reddit-tokens-kik-is-doomed-singapore-joins-libra-chinas-cbdc\/\">promoting<\/a> a dumb and bad idea called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2021\/11\/13\/news-craig-wright-in-court-mt-gox-settlement-bitcoin-futures-etf-reddit-community-points-miners-still-cant-sell-their-bitcoins\/\">Community Points,\u201d<\/a> where the karma points become ERC-20 tokens that you can buy or sell. Because who doesn&#8217;t love pay-to-win, eh?<\/p>\n<p>On 9 August, FTX announced that Reddit Community Points would be \u201cintegrated\u201d with FTX. You can trade your made-up internet points on Ethereum. The points were <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2022\/02\/07\/news-world-wildlife-nft-diem-sale-details-eccb-dcash-offline\/\">already being traded on UniSwap.<\/a> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/ftx-pays-payment-and-exchange-infrastructure-integrates-with-reddit-community-points-301601906.html\"><i>press release<\/i><\/a><i>; <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/ftx.com\/blog\/post\/reddit-tokenized-community-points\"><i>FTX blog<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>Reddit uses the Arbitrum Nova sidechain for its Community Points \u2014 but FTX say that moving tokens will cost you the Ethereum gas fees. These are much lower since the crash, around $1.16 average transaction fee as I write this.<\/p>\n<p>Reddit\u2019s terms of service still say: \u201cCommunity Points have no monetary value (i.e., are not a cash account or equivalent), cannot be sold to other users, and cannot be exchanged for cash or for any other goods and services outside of Reddit\u2019s virtual goods or services.\u201d [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.redditinc.com\/policies\/community-points-terms-of-service\"><i>Reddit<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>Reddit tried getting into NFTs in June 2021, selling four \u201cCryptoSnoos.\u201d (\u201cSnoo\u201d is Reddit\u2019s cartoon alien mascot.) [<a href=\"https:\/\/opensea.io\/collection\/reddit-cryptosnoos\"><i>Reddit<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>In July 2022, Reddit decided to get into Reddit Collectible Avatars, which totally aren\u2019t NFTs \u2014 though they\u2019re on the Polygon blockchain. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.redditinc.com\/blog\/blockchain-backed-collectible-avatars-coming-to-reddit-via-new-storefront\"><i>Reddit<\/i><\/a><i>; <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2022\/7\/7\/23198071\/reddit-nft-profile-picture-collectible-avatars\"><i>The Verge<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>The \u201ccollectible avatars\u201d were greeted with disgust by the actual users. Some subreddits, such as r\/shadowban, started banning users with NFT avatars. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Buttcoin\/comments\/wil7ji\/subs_are_mass_banning_users_with_reddit_nft\/\"><i>Reddit<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>A month later, Reddit seems already to be quietly ignoring the Collectible Avatars initiative. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Buttcoin\/comments\/wlv6vr\/sooo_has_reddit_already_given_up_on_the_latest\/\"><i>Reddit<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<h3>Good news for bitcoin<\/h3>\n<p>Mr. Saylor has now moved on to his next level &#8230; of maxi research. This level is beyond anything any one of us ever imagined. This level is in fact done in an exterior state. Meaning, that it is done completely exterior from MicroStrategy. At this level of maxi, the company is nothing more than an impediment, an encumbrance to any further gain as an maxi. Thus &#8230; Thus, at 2000 hours Friday, the 24th of January, A.D. 36, L. Michael Saylor discarded the company he had used in this lifetime for 74 years, 10 months, and 11 days. The company he had used to facilitate his existence in this BTC universe had ceased to be useful and in fact had become an impediment to the work he now must do outside of its confines. We felt it was important as bitcoiners, that you were the first to become aware of this fact. The Square side of the business runs some useful and popular actual-money payment systems, and does very nicely! Unfortunately, Dorsey\u2019s assorted bitcoin follies dragged the company into Q2 2022 losses of $208 million. [<a href=\"https:\/\/s29.q4cdn.com\/628966176\/files\/doc_financials\/2022\/q2\/Block_2Q22-Shareholder-Letter.pdf\"><i>Shareholder letter<\/i><\/a><i>, PDF<\/i>]<\/p>\n<p>Do you know, in all the years I\u2019ve been following crypto, I\u2019d never heard of any shenanigans from the Gemini exchange. Well, the CFTC sure has, and is suing over a futures offering from 2017. Vinnik operated the BTC-e crypto exchange, the favoured exchange for crooks to cash out their ransomware gains when it was running. Vinnik is also thought to have <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2017\/09\/17\/kim-nilsson-of-wizsec-how-the-bitcoins-were-stolen-from-mt-gox\/\">stolen a whole pile of bitcoins from the Mt. Gox exchange<\/a> back in the early 2010s. The US charges are for receiving stolen US bitcoins at BTC-e. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/pr\/alleged-russian-cryptocurrency-money-launderer-extradited-united-states\"><i>Justice Department<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>Apple and Google are coming under scrutiny for the scammy crypto apps on their supposedly-curated app stores. Senator Sherrod Brown wants details on their process for reviewing these apps, and in particular how these scammers get through. Get their asses, Senator. Robinhood Crypto had bad anti-money laundering controls and a compliance division that was understaffed to the point of uselessness, and didn&#8217;t have a consumer help phone line. The crypto division tried to punt compliance up to the main company, who weren\u2019t good at this either. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dfs.ny.gov\/reports_and_publications\/press_releases\/pr202208021\"><i>DFS NY<\/i><\/a><i>; <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dfs.ny.gov\/system\/files\/documents\/2022\/08\/ea20220801_robinhood.pdf\"><i>consent order<\/i><\/a><i>, PDF<\/i>]<\/p>\n<p>Ben Delo from BitMEX ended up getting 30 months\u2019 probation for violating the Bank Secrecy Act. Delo previously <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2022\/03\/04\/news-fca-versus-uk-crypto-infura-sanctions-on-ethereum-bitmex-reed-headed-for-trial-india\/\">paid a $10 million fine<\/a> to settle a case brought by the Department of Justice and the CFTC. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/business\/2022\/01\/21\/facebook-of-russia-exec-rogozov-joins-telegrams-spin-off-blockchain-project\/\"><i>CoinDesk<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>The new TON Foundation is in talks to launch stablecoins in Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and the Republic of Congo \u2014 in the central CFA Franc zone, which includes the Central African Republic, which <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2022\/04\/28\/the-central-african-republic-adopted-bitcoin-last-week-full-text-of-the-law\/\">passed an El Salvador-like law<\/a> to make cryptocurrencies legal tender in April. This is why Telegram has been asking its users for money for \u201cTelegram Premium.\u201d [<a href=\"https:\/\/telegram.org\/blog\/700-million-and-premium\"><i>Telegram<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<h3>Putta block<\/h3>\n<p>There\u2019s little more hilarious in crypto and blockchain than just going through the claims and watching the clown car disintegrate before your eyes. Niko Weh found a blog post listing 34 enterprise blockchain projects that absolutely showed there were real-world use cases for blockchains! [<i>BuiltIn, <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20220607110520\/https:\/\/builtin.com\/blockchain\/blockchain-applications\"><i>archive<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>So he went through them. Most are dead, the blockchain bit doesn\u2019t do anything, or it\u2019s really a cryptocurrency project. The only one that isn\u2019t all of that is Chainalysis, which sells compliance services to real financial institutions \u2014 and that\u2019s cryptocurrency too, really. [<a href=\"https:\/\/weh.wtf\/34-blockchain-projects.html\"><i>blog post<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<h3>Doctor Bucks&#8217; letter<\/h3>\n<p>Mailchimp is a non-spam bulk email firm. They just kicked all their crypto customers off: &#8220;Please note, we cannot allow businesses involved in the sale, transaction, trading, exchange, storage, marketing, or production there of cryptocurrencies, virtual currencies and any digital assets.&#8221; Even crypto news site Decrypt was hit. [<i><a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/107099\/intuit-owned-mailchimp-is-banning-crypto-content-creators\">Decrypt<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JesseFriedland\/status\/1555567106573455360\">Twitter<\/a><\/i>]<\/p>\n<p>The crypto world makes out there is <em>no comprehensible reason<\/em> for this action, and they don&#8217;t understand it at all! But Mailchimp&#8217;s terms of service set out the reason explicitly: &#8220;Some industries have higher-than-average abuse complaints, which can jeopardize deliverability. In order to maintain the reliability of our platform, we may not allow businesses that offer these types of services, products, or content.&#8221; The crypto guys were just spammy as hell. [<a href=\"https:\/\/mailchimp.com\/en-gb\/legal\/acceptable_use\/\"><em>Mailchimp<\/em><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>There just happens to be a class action suit that was filed in April against Intuit, who own Mailchimp, alleging that Intuit \u201cintentionally, willfully, recklessly, or negligently\u201d failed to protect Mailchimp data, and that this led cryptocurrency being stolen from Trezor wallet users. Now they&#8217;re having a few issues paying it back.
