{"id":22444,"date":"2022-04-10T22:00:38","date_gmt":"2022-04-10T22:00:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/?p=22444"},"modified":"2022-04-20T17:50:05","modified_gmt":"2022-04-20T17:50:05","slug":"the-national-posts-invisible-hand-society-nft-collection-the-facepalm-manifesto","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2022\/04\/10\/the-national-posts-invisible-hand-society-nft-collection-the-facepalm-manifesto\/","title":{"rendered":"The National Post&#8217;s Invisible Hand Society NFT collection \u2014 the facepalm manifesto"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Canadian newspaper The National Post are huge cheerleaders for capitalism \u2014 in the manner you&#8217;d expect from a paper founded by billionaire convicted fraudster <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Conrad_Black\">Conrad Black,<\/a> and now owned by a hedge fund.<\/p>\n<p>Making money&#8217;s one thing \u2014 but some people get a bit weird about it.<\/p>\n<p>The Post issued a line of NFTs in March to celebrate \u201cfree enterprise,\u201d as part of the paper\u2019s ongoing series \u201cThe Capitalist Manifesto.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The NFTs were pictures of Margaret Thatcher, Freidrich Hayek, Milton Friedman and Ayn Rand. Apparently unable to find any more Augusto Pinochet fans, the artist added Adam Smith. Desperate to find a sixth, he created a fictional character: comic-book-style superhero Captain Industry \u2014 to embody \u201cthe business leaders who amassed great personal wealth to the everlasting benefit of their nation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>These luminaries, real and fictional, were rendered as the \u201cinvisible hand of the market\u201d \u2014 literal facepalms.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>From its majestic boardroom atop the highest of financial centers, the Society oversees the mysterious workings of supply and demand. Their guiding vision ensures capital flows unhindered, fueling the engines of prosperity.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Postmedia follows assiduously in the footsteps of Rand \u2014 the company took CAD$35 million in government bailouts and subsidies in 2021, and called this a \u201ckey pillar\u201d of its business strategies. Many thought this was an April Fool\u2019s gag a day early \u2014 but the project had been started in late 2021, and evidence left on the Ethereum blockchain shows the paper trying to set up the project starting in January. [<i>Twitter, <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/NNTpe\"><i>archive<\/i><\/a><i>; <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/etherscan.io\/address\/0x3b5018309e1a2cb15459a719f863814869fb2739\"><i>Etherscan<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>Postmedia executive editor Kevin Libin and National Post editor-in-chief Rob Roberts wanted to launch an NFT, for some reason. They asked Postmedia multimedia producer Brice Hall to develop an idea.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe most successful NFT collections do more than just sell seemingly overvalued JPEGs,\u201d said Hall. \u201cThey build a community around what\u2019s best described as a user-generated story, where your NFT is your ticket to participate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Finance reporter Stephanie Hughes then had to get the NFTs onto OpenSea. The site wouldn\u2019t even let Hughes list the NFTs with a price in ether \u2014 only OpenSea\u2019s site-specific <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2022\/04\/02\/blockchain-bridges-how-the-smart-contract-pinata-works-and-why-bridges-keep-getting-hacked\/\">wrapped ether,<\/a> WETH, on the Polygon blockchain. [<i>National Post, <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/9DpUM\"><i>archive<\/i><\/a><i>; <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/support.opensea.io\/hc\/en-us\/articles\/360063498293-What-s-WETH-How-do-I-get-it-\"><i>OpenSea<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>Like so many projects founded in purist market idealism absent the tawdry details of real life \u2014 perhaps you can think of a few from the cryptocurrency world \u2014 it didn\u2019t go so well. The bourgeoisie enjoy flattery as much as anyone, and possibly more \u2014 but it wasn\u2019t enough to separate them from their money.<\/p>\n<p>The Invisible Hand Society sold one NFT, Milton Friedman, for 0.0068 ETH. The buyer was user \u201cdannycase.\u201d [<a href=\"https:\/\/opensea.io\/dannycase\"><i>OpenSea<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>On 8 April, the National Post attempted to delete all traces of the site and their coverage of it. Robson Fletcher from CBC caught them in the act. [<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CBCFletch\/status\/1512517495424397313\"><i>Twitter<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>The paper took care to exclude from the Internet Archive both the Invisible Hand Society page and the National Post article promoting the collection. Parts have shown up on archive.today. [<i>Invisible Hand Society, <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/PRNvn\"><i>archive<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>The one image left up on OpenSea is Milton Friedman \u2014 now a snip at 420.69 ETH. [<a href=\"https:\/\/opensea.io\/collection\/invisible-hand-society\"><i>OpenSea<\/i><\/a><i>, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/vIJKK\">archive<\/a><\/i>]<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe collection personifies Adam Smith\u2019s timeless image of the free market, casting each NFT as a real-life champion of capitalism and transforming them into deities,\u201d Hall said, in a manner that certainly doesn&#8217;t come across as aspiring to cultishness, or crawling up his sponsors&#8217; backsides.<\/p>\n<p>This is one of the most advanced NFT projects I\u2019ve seen to date, so I\u2019ve fished the page out of the Google cache and I&#8217;m reproducing the text and images here. Later, his theory of monetarism would go on to influence such luminaries as fellow society member Margaret Thatcher and former U.S. President Ronald Reagan. Friedman has truly earned his place among the world&#8217;s most renowned free market advocates.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ADAM SMITH<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The original Invisible Hand Society member, Smith literally wrote the book on free market capitalism. His book, The Wealth of Nations, laid the foundations of the free market, arguing that rational self-interest and competition lead to economic prosperity. Adam Smith established the Invisible Hand Society, and to him a wiser, more affluent world owes a debt of thanks.<\/p>\n<p><strong>AYN RAND<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Known by her pen name to her readers and admirers, Ayn Rand&#8217;s fiction stridently defended the free market. Rand understood that individual rights, including property rights, were the foundation of a truly free society, and her novels influenced a multitude of political movements. She sits proudly as a member of the society.<\/p>\n<p><strong>CAPTAIN INDUSTRY<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Captain embodies the business leaders who amassed great personal wealth to the everlasting benefit of their nation.
