This decision shows the the forward-looking approach we are determined to take towards cryptoassets in the UK.\u201d You\u2019d think it was 2018 again. [<em><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hmtreasury\/status\/1510971092072079360\">Twitter<\/a><\/em>]<\/p>\n<p>The Royal Mint NFT is part of a broader initiative for the UK to become a &#8220;global hub&#8221; for crypto. The City has long served the more upmarket money launderer, and this should be viewed as a pitch for that market. Particularly as the &#8220;London laundromat&#8221; just lost its lucrative customer base of Russian oligarchs. [<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/cfb74ef3-13d2-492a-b8da-c70b6340ccdd\">FT<\/a>, paywalled<\/em>]<\/p>\n<p>City minister John Glen says the government is determined to show \u201cthe UK is open for business and open for crypto businesses.\u201d [<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/speeches\/keynote-speech-by-john-glen-economic-secretary-to-the-treasury-at-the-innovate-finance-global-summit\">GOV.UK<\/a><\/em>]<\/p>\n<p>Does this mean the Financial Conduct Authority&#8217;s<a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2022\/03\/04\/news-fca-versus-uk-crypto-infura-sanctions-on-ethereum-bitmex-reed-headed-for-trial-india\/\"> appalling refusal<\/a> to let <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2022\/03\/11\/news-sanctioned-russians-try-to-dump-bitcoin-no-crypto-atms-in-the-uk-bored-apes-underwear-fails-associated-press-nft-plan-football-sponsorships-how-facebooks-diem-died\/\">shonky crypto garbage<\/a> set up shop in the UK will be curtailed? &#8230; No. \u201cWe aren\u2019t going to lower our standards, but we are going to sustain our technological neutral approach.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Treasury will be regulating stablecoin issuers under the FCA. Private GBP stablecoins will need to be backed by a reserve of pounds sterling \u2014 which the issuer won&#8217;t be able to lend out.<\/p>\n<p>Jemima Kelly, FT: &#8220;So a blockchain-based digital receipt for a JPEG that you don\u2019t actually own is emblematic of Britain\u2019s future.&#8221; [<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/91a96ce3-6bec-42fe-a174-d293d4be0b60\">FT<\/a>, free with login<\/em>]<\/p>\n<h3>Righteous maelstrom<\/h3>\n<p>The SEC has set out some accounting rules for crypto-assets. They\u2019re simple, obvious and the way that everyone\u2019s been doing this already: cryptos you hold on behalf of a customer should be accounted as a liability to the customer. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sec.gov\/oca\/staff-accounting-bulletin-121\"><i>SEC<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>This works the same way as bank deposits: the bank owns the money, but has a liability to you for it. You are the beneficial owner of the money or the crypto deposit, but in a bankruptcy you will become a creditor. So just like crypto exchanges have been presumed to work for the past decade.<\/p>\n<p>Crypto pumpers know it\u2019s their duty to try to make even an innocuous regulation like this into a call-to-arms for a culture war. It\u2019s a bonding experience, like watching Tucker Carlson. So here\u2019s Caitlin Long complaining that cryptos are being treated differently to securities. Is she saying that Bitcoin and Ethereum should be classified as securities? [<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CaitlinLong_\/status\/1509611689729302530\"><i>Twitter<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>The SEC has rejected the ARK 21shares proposal for a Bitcoin ETF, for precisely <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2022\/01\/28\/news-twitter-hexagons-binance-plays-at-compliance-bitcoin-widow-tour-russia\/\">the same list of reasons<\/a> they rejected the <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2022\/03\/16\/news-no-crypto-in-401k-retirement-plans-more-bitcoin-etf-rejections-nfts-on-instagram-jamaican-cbdc\/\">last several<\/a> Bitcoin ETFs \u2014 see pages 22-23 of this new rejection. I\u2019m really not clear on the point of repeatedly submitting proposals that are trivially going to fail, again and again and again \u2014 surely this is getting a bit expensive as culture war fodder. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sec.gov\/rules\/sro\/cboebzx\/2022\/34-94571.pdf\"><i>SEC<\/i><\/a><i>, PDF<\/i>]<\/p>\n<h3>Regulatory clarity<\/h3>\n<p>The European Parliament has voted: EU businesses will need to inform the authorities as to the sender and receiver of <i>all<\/i> crypto transactions. This includes transactions under 1000 EUR, because smurfing (sending a flurry of small transactions instead of one large one) is so easy with crypto. The requirement also applies to transactions coming from self-hosted wallets \u2014 individuals who hold their own keys. The only exemption is person-to-person transactions between individuals. The vote now has to be agreed to by the European Council. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/news\/en\/press-room\/20220324IPR26164\/crypto-assets-new-rules-to-stop-illicit-flows-in-the-eu\"><i>European Parliament<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>Argentina is taking a $45 billion debt deal with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The deal explicitly discourages Argentina from pulling an El Salvador: \u201cTo further safeguard financial stability, we are taking important steps to discourage the use of crypto-currencies with a view to preventing money laundering, informality and disintermediation\u201d. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imf.org\/-\/media\/files\/publications\/loi\/2022\/arg030322.ashx\"><i>IMF<\/i><\/a><i>, PDF; <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/policy\/2022\/03\/18\/argentine-congress-approves-imf-debt-deal-that-would-discourage-crypto-usage\/\"><i>CoinDesk<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>From 1 May, Indonesia will be putting VAT on crypto transactions. The Reuters report doesn\u2019t say how much the sales tax will be, though it\u2019ll be less than the usual 11%. \u201cCrypto assets will be subject to VAT because they are a commodity as defined by the trade ministry. They are not a currency.\u201d Crypto will also attract an 0.1% capital gains tax. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/finance\/indonesia-impose-vat-income-tax-crypto-assets-may-2022-04-01\/\"><i>Reuters<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<h3>Fol de rol<\/h3>\n<p>Has anyone else noticed the NFT advertising push slowing down? Venture capitalists, and others, are dropping the \u201c.eth\u201d from their Twitter display names. Travis Brown gives us a list of 3,900 Twitter accounts that have recently removed an \u201c.eth\u201d from their name. [<a href=\"https:\/\/gist.github.com\/travisbrown\/ddea062402cc22cc2aba78bff4d9c95f\"><i>GitHub<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p><em>F1 Delta Time<\/em>, an officially-licensed Formula 1 NFT racing game developed by Animoca that launched in 2019, announced its shutdown on 15 March \u2014 and closed the next day. The game was promoted as &#8220;Play to Earn,&#8221; and the NFTs were promoted as investments you would own. But Animoca lost their license to the Formula 1 branding, and rugpulled the players and buyers with one day&#8217;s notice. Aninoca offered the players and NFT holders &#8220;ways in which they can participate in the wider REVV Motorsport ecosystem&#8221;: instead of the Formula 1 cars their NFTs represented, those NFTs will now represent &#8230; generic replacement cars in some completely different game. The tokens are now all but worthless. [<em><a href=\"https:\/\/revvmotorsport.medium.com\/f1-delta-time-to-cease-operations-announces-rewards-for-supporters-2fbf307fe89f\">blog post<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/kotaku.com\/f1-formula-1-one-delta-time-nft-crypto-cursed-shut-down-1848748953\">Kotaku<\/a><\/em>]<\/p>\n<p>It has been [0] days since the DeFi system yet again <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2022\/04\/02\/blockchain-bridges-how-the-smart-contract-pinata-works-and-why-bridges-keep-getting-hacked\/\">worked as designed.<\/a> This time, Inverse Finance was taken for \u201c$15.6 million\u201d in ETH, WBTC and minor altcoins by a price oracle being manipulated. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/tech\/2022\/04\/02\/defi-lender-inverse-finance-exploited-for-156-million\/\"><i>CoinDesk<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>In the quest for more money, the music industry has turned to NFTs. A pile of music news sites have gone all-in on NFT promotion of late \u2014 it\u2019s quite disconcerting. So how\u2019s Web3 going for musicians? So far, the buyers for music-based NFTs are crypto speculators, not the artists\u2019 fans. Total sales across all musical NFTs so far are $83 million \u2014 almost entirely in cryptocurrencies, on NFT platforms. Having money go directly from NFT traders to artists is better than bad \u2014 though that doesn\u2019t mean that doing an NFT as an artist is a good idea, <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2021\/03\/11\/nfts-crypto-grifters-try-to-scam-artists-again\/\">as I set out last year.<\/a> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.waterandmusic.com\/the-state-of-music-web3-tools-for-artists\/\"><i>Water &amp; Music<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt took me 7 steps over the course of a day to buy an NFT, showing just how hard it&#8217;ll be for the market to go mainstream.\u201d The author is a crypto fan, and another of her articles argues that <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2019\/04\/20\/medical-records-on-the-blockchain-the-history-of-a-bad-idea\/\">putting medical history on a blockchain<\/a> is a good idea. But even a crypto fan found this stuff was <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2021\/05\/18\/cryptocurrency-in-2021-still-dysfunctional-nonsense-unusable-by-normal-humans\/\">broken trash that doesn\u2019t work.<\/a> \u201cIn the meantime, I&#8217;ll be counting my blessings that I&#8217;ll never have to start this process from scratch ever again.\u201d [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/what-it-takes-to-buy-an-nft-opensea-steps-complications-2022-3?r=US&amp;IR=T\"><i>Business Insider<\/i><\/a><i>; <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/how-to-buy-nfts-on-opensea-2022-3?r=US&amp;IR=T\"><i>Business Insider<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>Philip Rosedale, creator of Second Life, was interviewed by PC Gamer on the Metaverse hype \u2014 given the Metaverse pitch so far has been \u201cSecond Life but rubbish.\u201d Rosedale considers the entire precept of Web3 to be pernicious \u2014 \u201cThe Matrix is not the instruction manual. The New York Times didn\u2019t think much of it: &#8220;it soon becomes clear that the aggrieved Quadriga users are uniquely unfit investigators of its mystery.&#8221; The story centres on Tong Zou, who tried to save 2% in fees by moving his life savings from the US to Canada via Quadriga, and lost the lot. But the crypto mining market is <em>fine<\/em>, you understand. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-04-04\/crypto-miner-marathon-open-to-sale-at-right-valuation-ceo-says\"><em>Bloomberg<\/em><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>Hedge funds are trying to short Tether \u2014 \u201cSome hedge funds arranged short sales of tether with Genesis Global Trading Inc., one of the larger crypto brokerages for professional investors, said Matt Ballensweig, Genesis\u2019s co-head of trading and lending.\u201d There\u2019s no details on how Genesis has constructed a short that the hedge funds think will pay out if Tether pops.
