[<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fca.org.uk\/news\/press-releases\/fca-taking-assertive-action-tackle-harm-consumer-investments-market\"><i>The Block<\/i><\/a><i>, paywalled<\/i>]<\/p>\n<p>The Block wrote in February that there were 69 new entrant firms and 27 existing firms waiting for news \u2014 including the crypto side of online bank Revolut as one example. The Block didn\u2019t get a comment from the FCA for this story \u2014 nor did it note failing to get a comment. They asked, right? [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theblockcrypto.com\/post\/133597\/crypto-firms-face-cliff-edge-in-uk-as-time-ticks-down-for-aml-approval\"><i>The Block<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>Coincidentally, the FCA just happens to have put out a press release about how it protects retail investors. The top type of scam reported to the FCA is crypto scams. Over the last six months, the FCA opened over 300 cases concerning dodgy crypto firms. There are 50 live investigations in progress, including criminal probes.<\/p>\n<p>The press release also brags that \u201cThe latest data shows a quarter of applications from firms wanting to join the consumer investment market are being stopped by the FCA.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So I suspect the UK crypto industry can go whistle. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fca.org.uk\/news\/press-releases\/fca-taking-assertive-action-tackle-harm-consumer-investments-market\"><i>FCA<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<h3>Gas! Gas! An ecstasy of fumbling<\/h3>\n<p>Ethereum is <i>really truly decentralised, honest,<\/i> and definitely not a wholly-owned subsidiary of ConsenSys \u2014 despite Infura, the only way to use the Ethereum network at any speed, blocking a swathe of countries in response to US sanctions pressure.<\/p>\n<p>Amongst <i>many<\/i> other services, the OpenSea NFT marketplace and ConsenSys\u2019 MetaMask wallet software depend on Infura. Blocks were reported from Venezuela, Iran and Lebanon, with other jurisdictions apparently affected. Infura apologised for an overly-broad block at their end. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theblockcrypto.com\/linked\/136256\/venezuelan-users-of-crypto-wallet-metamask-say-they-can-no-longer-access-it\"><i>The Block<\/i><\/a><i>; <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/infura_io\/status\/1499446959827931175\"><i>Twitter<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>Many aggrieved users had thought MetaMask was a self-hosting wallet \u2014 when instead, it mixes the worst of <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2021\/05\/18\/cryptocurrency-in-2021-still-dysfunctional-nonsense-unusable-by-normal-humans\/\">self-hosted brittleness<\/a> with the worst of custodial central control.<\/p>\n<p>Look, you don&#8217;t <i>have<\/i> to use MetaMask! You can always, uh, telnet to port 30303 on a node, after you&#8217;ve worked out on a pocket calculator or maybe a slide rule all the bytes to send down the line as your transaction. If the node doesn&#8217;t run on Infura too. See? <i>Completely<\/i> decentralised.<\/p>\n<p>(&#8220;Send a stamped, self addressed envelope along with your transaction instructions and 20 bucks to Vitalik Buterin c\/o the Ethereum Foundation and they\u2019ll send confirmation in no more than 5 business days.&#8221; \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DoctorOrrery\/status\/1499475886802075649\">DoctorOrrery<\/a>)<\/p>\n<h3>Lie dream of a casino soul<\/h3>\n<p>BitMEX executive indictments: <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2022\/02\/24\/news-opensea-phishing-attack-bitmex-execs-plead-guilty-2016-dao-hacker-maybe-found-cryptsy-indictment\/\">Arthur Hayes and Ben Delo entered a plea<\/a> and paid a fine. Sam Reed doesn\u2019t seem to have negotiated a settlement, and his case is still in play \u2014 the judge ruled that Reed had had sufficient notice that his alleged money-laundering misconduct was illegal, so the case can go to a jury. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.law360.com\/fintech\/articles\/1469157\/bitmex-founder-can-t-dodge-trial-over-anti-laundering-laws\"><i>Law360<\/i><\/a><i>, paywalled<\/i>]<\/p>\n<p>Jaryd Koenigsmann\u2019s Australian crypto exchange <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2021\/12\/09\/news-craig-wright-loses-baseball-bitcoin-kickstarter-on-the-blockchain-australian-crypto-scams\/\">MyCryptoWallet<\/a> appears to have been running on air since at least March 2018. The liquidator says: \u201cBased on the information currently known, I do not believe the director has any defence available to avoid personal liability of a potential insolvent trading claim.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When the Sydney Morning Herald started investigating, the exchange accused them of running a \u201cnegative shill campaign &#8230; It is quite upsetting to hear you are creating an article about false negativity regarding MyCryptoWallet rather than the amazing ground-breaking blockchain technology we offer Australian users.\u201d So it\u2019s good that everyone is now <i>completely<\/i> aware of how ground-breaking blockchain technology works in practice. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/business\/companies\/failed-aussie-crypto-exchange-may-have-been-insolvent-for-years-liquidator-says-20220304-p5a1mb.html\"><i>SMH<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<h3>Baby\u2019s on fire<\/h3>\n<p>&#8220;Incentivises renewables&#8221; my buttcoin. Bitcoin mining got <i>even dirtier<\/i> after miners relocated in June 2021, following China\u2019s crackdown on mining. The share of renewables in the electricity mix of miners dropped from 41.6% to 25.1%. The carbon footprint of the network increased by 17%. How annoying. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.btc-echo.de\/news\/exklusiv-bitcoin-verbot-vom-tisch-136079\/\"><i>BTC-Echo<\/i><\/a><i>, in German<\/i>]<\/p>\n<p>US crypto mining company Layer1 accuses US crypto mining company Blockbase of \u201cdouble-dealing\u201d in signing a deal with US crypto mining company HIVE (not the fork of Steem), on the basis that Layer1\u2019s deal with Blockbase included exclusive ownership of Blockbase\u2019s technology and intellectual property. Let them fight. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.law360.com\/fintech\/articles\/1469334\/crypto-miner-accuses-business-partner-of-double-dealing-\"><i>Law360<\/i><\/a><i>, paywalled<\/i>]<\/p>\n<h3>Coiners: Be your own bank!<br \/>\nIndia: Yes.<\/h3>\n<p>India now plans to tax crypto earnings at 30%, and a 1% tax on all transactions. Binance\u2019s local branch, WazirX, maintains that this is <i>good<\/i> news for Bitcoin in India! The use case is absolutely unclear \u2014 given that the Unified Payments Interface is here and works well \u2014 and nobody has any idea what specific form this CBDC will take.<\/p>\n<p>The difference from UPI is that the RBI CBDC \u201cwill be based on cutting-edge blockchain technology,\u201d which I would <i>guess<\/i> means a back end data store running on Hyperledger. So the use case seems to be exuberance for technology, without all that tedious technical understanding. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-02-01\/india-to-launch-central-bank-digital-currency-next-fiscal-year\"><i>Bloomberg<\/i><\/a><i>; <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/blogs\/voices\/cbdc-and-the-rise-of-india-as-a-world-leader-in-a-digital-tomorrow\/\"><i>Times of India<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>Blockchains may have <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2018\/09\/02\/first-legally-mandated-blockchain-telecom-regulatory-authority-of-indias-spam-call-complaint-database\/\">weaseled their way into the Indian bureaucracy<\/a> \u2014 but cryptocurrencies are trash. T. Rabi Sankar, the deputy governor of the RBI, wants a complete ban on cryptos. He likens them to Ponzi schemes. &#8220;We have examined arguments by those advocating cryptos should be regulated and found that none of them stand up to basic scrutiny.&#8221; Remember that the attempted Indian ban on cryptos was in the wake of <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2018\/07\/16\/news-bbc-on-kodak-kashminer-indian-crypto-ponzi-china-crypto-gambling-vinnik-to-france-ethereum-clog-institutional-investors-dont-want-cryptos\/\">a massive crypto-based Ponzi.<\/a> [<a href=\"https:\/\/rbi.org.in\/Scripts\/BS_SpeechesView.aspx?Id=1196\"><i>RBI<\/i><\/a><i>; <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbctv18.com\/cryptocurrency\/rbi-deputy-governor-calls-for-outright-crypto-ban-likens-them-to-ponzi-schemes-12490812.htm\"><i>CNBC TV18<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<h3>Fol de Rol<\/h3>\n<p>This is the cyberpunk future we deserved \u2014 the first NFT rugpull by a nation-state. The deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine, Mykhailo Fedorov, asked for donations in crypto to the war effort against Russia, said that donors would get an NFT &#8230; and changed his mind. Most donors seem to think getting rugged by a country is pretty cool, in fact. [<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FedorovMykhailo\/status\/1499348177002151937\"><i>Twitter<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>We should have thanked our good fortune to only have <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2022\/02\/12\/could-morgan-and-lichtenstein-have-done-the-2016-bitfinex-hack-im-not-ruling-it-out\/\">Razzlekhan,<\/a> really. The promotional video by Randi Zuckerberg \u2014 sister of Facebook founder Mark \u2014 for her NFT line is really quite something. This was tweeted by an NFT pumper; you\u2019ll see in the replies her outrage at Randi intruding on her pitch. Fusitu&#8217;a is very big on the remittances use case; remittances made up 39% of Tonga\u2019s GDP in 2020, with transaction costs of around 10%. There are software and hardware wallets, which can transmit money offline. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlanticcouncil.org\/blogs\/econographics\/a-report-card-on-chinas-central-bank-digital-currency-the-e-cny\/\"><i>Atlantic Council<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>Revolving door news \u2014 the Boston Federal Reserve and the MIT Digital Currency Initiative <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2022\/02\/07\/news-world-wildlife-nft-diem-sale-details-eccb-dcash-offline\/\">wrote a possible CBDC implementation.<\/a> It turns out that a pile of ex-Circle staff had joined the Boston Fed and worked on the project. What led to Valve dropping crypto payments on Steam? About <i>half<\/i> the payments were fraudulent. His debtors are mostly people who sued him for non-payment of debts. Guo\u2019s associate, dollar-store Rasputin Steve Bannon, was <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2021\/11\/28\/news-celsius-arrest-el-salvador-journalists-hacked-senate-vs-stablecoins\/\">arrested in November last year<\/a> on Guo\u2019s yacht.
