[<a href=\"#byemail\"><i>scroll down, or click here<\/i><\/a>]<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Doing it for the kids<\/h3>\n<p>On 9 February 2022, BBC News ran a heartwarming puff piece on Birmingham cryptocurrency millionaire Hanad Hassan \u2014 who apparently put fifty dollars into cryptos last year, and turned it into $1 million! \u201cMr Hassan now wants to use his wealth to help people.\u201d [<i>BBC, <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20220209102657\/https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/uk-england-birmingham-60289028\"><i>archive<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>This was to promote a BBC1 Midlands documentary, <i>We Are England: Birmingham\u2019s Self-Made Crypto-Millionaire<\/i> \u2014 about Hassan\u2019s wonderful work for his local area \u2014 that was all set for broadcast that evening. [<i>BBC, <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20220204210442\/https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/m0014c5c\"><i>archive<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, it appears that BBC Midlands\u2019 research failed to go so far as Googling their subject. Jim Waterson from the Guardian did Google our fellow \u2014 and found out just how Hassan\u2019s crypto career had worked out. [<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jimwaterson\/status\/1491361991541538817\"><i>Twitter<\/i><\/a><i>; <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/2022\/feb\/10\/bbc-cryptocurrency-documentary-pulled-from-air-at-last-minute\"><i>Guardian<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>Hassan\u2019s crypto, Orfano, a highly-pumped token on Binance Smart Chain, had shut down in September 2021 \u2014 and the promoters kept everyone\u2019s ether. Orfano came back as OrfanoX \u2014 which shut down in October, again keeping everyone&#8217;s ether. [<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Coneee\/status\/1491365412101292034\"><i>Twitter<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe bsc space has changed quite bit since Orfano originally launched with a whole new way of marketing and tokenomics and I also believe this new space is toxic,\u201d said Orfano\u2019s promoters,\u00a0 in the process of providing a worked example of the toxicity. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Orfano\/comments\/qhowu4\/lol_what_happened_to_orfano\/hifo5b2\/\"><i>Reddit<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>The BBC quietly deleted the news article and even the programme listing when Waterson asked them about all of this. They say they&#8217;re conducting an &#8220;internal investigation,&#8221; to examine \u201ceditorial issues\u201d. BBC Director of Nations Rhodri Talfan Davies has apparently been reminding some <em>We Are England<\/em> producers of the concept of basic journalistic rigour \u2014 even on personality pieces. [<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/article\/bbc-inquiry-into-pulled-documentary-on-crypto-investor-hanad-hassan-cxcqw3ljd\">The Times<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/HpCRI\">archive<\/a><\/em>]<\/p>\n<h3>Kicker conspiracy<\/h3>\n<p>Even at the top end of sport, revenues have leveled off. So a common crypto grift is to sell the idea of NFTs as collectible \u201cfan tokens\u201d\u00a0 to sports clubs. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2022\/jan\/22\/dangerous-game-football-clubs-look-to-mine-fans-cash-with-crypto-offerings\"><i>Guardian<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>English Premier League football team Arsenal <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2018\/01\/24\/news-friedman-llp-parts-with-bitfinex-weiss-crypto-ratings-netherlands-sec-icos-venezuela-arsenal\/\">fell for CashBetCoin in 2018,<\/a> and last year did a deal with Chiliz\/Socios to release the \u201c$AFC Fan Token.\u201d Unfortunately, the promotions for the fan tokens talked up the price a bit much \u2014 and the Advertising Standards Authority has now required the club to put investment warnings on the tokens. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.asa.org.uk\/rulings\/arsenal-football-club-plc-a21-1121873-arsenal-football-club-plc.html\"><i>ASA<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>Another Premier League team, Crystal Palace, suddenly lost the logo of cryptocurrency sponsor IQONIQ from its official shirt. That\u2019s because the company had gone into liquidation. IQONIQ had deals with clubs across Europe, and sold fans a lot of tokens, which are now unusable. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/article\/fans-face-big-cryptocurrency-losses-after-platform-goes-into-liquidation-czxpcwd60\"><i>Times<\/i><\/a><i>, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/jWdZJ\">archive<\/a><\/i>]<\/p>\n<p>From December last year, we have an amazing tale of a barely existent NFT pseudo-company, Color Star, who sponsored the Philadelphia 76ers basketball team. Color Star \u201cfocuses on the application of tech and artificial intelligence (AI) in the entertainment industry.\u201d The company\u2019s website largely doesn\u2019t work. Color Star\u2019s CEO, Sir Lucas Capitein, doesn\u2019t appear to exist, and claims a degree from Harvard that doesn\u2019t exist. Color Star plans to operate a \u201cmetaverse.\u201d [<a href=\"https:\/\/defector.com\/what-the-hell-is-this-company-the-76ers-just-partnered-with\/\"><i>Defector<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p><strong>Update<\/strong> (from Craig Burley in comments): Color Star is dropped by the 76ers, makes a legal threat to Defector for covering the story, and is unclear on how New York addresses work. And Lucas Capitein appears on video! [<em><a href=\"https:\/\/defector.com\/metaverse-company-blames-unlikely-third-party-for-recent-misfortunes-following-termination-of-76ers-partnership\/\">Defector<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=VTRAcJH117M\">YouTube<\/a><\/em>]<\/p>\n<h3>Baby\u2019s on fire<\/h3>\n<p>The possible last days of Bitcoin mining in Siberia \u2014 Polina Ivanova from the Financial Times goes to Irkutsk.<\/p>\n<p>The region around Irkutsk is extremely cold, but also has a ton of cheap hydroelectric power \u2014 around 1.2\u20131.5c\/kWh household tariff \u2014 dating back to Soviet era uranium enrichment. Add cheap ex-Chinese mining rigs, and you have a lot of people out for a quick ruble. As well as the money, the rigs make good space heaters.<\/p>\n<p>Irkutskenergosbyt, the local energy provider, is not pleased with the mining \u2014 crypto miners are overloading the local network and causing blackouts, and even melted power lines. The commercial tariff \u2014 which the miners <em>should<\/em> be paying \u2014 is also four times the household tariff.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo one bothers to try and understand what bitcoins actually are,\u201d says one miner. \u201cThe money just trickles in and trickles in. You\u2019d better hurry up and get involved before this whole thing gets busted.\u201d [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/aaf7e586-430b-4937-ad24-2cac6510fddc\"><i>FT<\/i><\/a><i>, paywalled<\/i>]<\/p>\n<p>After months of US Bitcoin miners not selling their freshly-mined coins \u2014 instead using them as collateral for <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2022\/01\/22\/bitcoin-goes-down-and-time-bombs-are-waiting-in-the-market\/\">loans of actual money<\/a> from Galaxy Digital and DCG \u2014 US miners are evidently short of even that cash, and are dumping their coins on the market again. The Bitcoin price is being held up by a Tether pump, but the miners&#8217; stock prices are taking a pummelling. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-02-11\/bitcoin-miners-are-selling-coins-in-worrying-sign-of-a-shakeout\"><i>Bloomberg<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>Crypto miners in the US are setting up mining in \u201copportunity zones,\u201d which were meant to encourage businesses to set up in poor communities, to avoid the swingeing capital gains taxes they&#8217;d otherwise be liable for after a very good 2021. One company is mining in South America \u2014 but set up a US management company with its address in an opportunity zone. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.co.uk\/entry\/cryptocurrency-opportunity-zones_n_6203f0f1e4b039350e6d60fa\"><i>Huffington Post<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>UK parliamentary petition: Ban the mining of and trade in &#8220;proof of work&#8221; cryptocurrencies within the UK. Shockingly few signers on this one as yet. [<a href=\"https:\/\/petition.parliament.uk\/petitions\/601629\"><i>UK Government and Parliament Petitions<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>Crypto Mines Congress: As the blockchain industry comes under scrutiny, crypto interests are cozying up to lawmakers \u2014 with quotes from me on CBDCs. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyposter.com\/crypto-mines-congress\/\"><i>Daily Poster<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<h3>Monkey laundering<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2022\/02\/12\/could-morgan-and-lichtenstein-have-done-the-2016-bitfinex-hack-im-not-ruling-it-out\/\">Alleged Bitfinex money launderer Heather Morgan<\/a>\u2019s hobby was doing the world\u2019s absolute worst white woman alleged rap. Morgan sold NFTs of her album artwork \u2014 which are confirmed to have come from her rzk.eth address on the Ethereum blockchain. OpenSea froze the NFTs. The buyers are demanding that OpenSea refund them. Decentralised! [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/m7vpyp\/someone-bought-nfts-from-accused-bitcoin-launderers-and-theyre-pissed\"><i>Vice<\/i><\/a><i>; <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.buzzfeednews.com\/article\/sarahemerson\/crypto-rapper-nft-opensea-owner-money-laundering\"><i>Buzzfeed News<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>NFT market Cent has stopped trading NFTs, due to rampant plagiarism \u2014 &#8220;and people selling sets of NFTs which resemble a security.&#8221; Yeah, I think I see the bit that had them worried. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/finance\/nft-marketplace-shuts-citing-rampant-fakes-plagiarism-problem-2022-02-11\/\"><i>Reuters<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>How big was the NFT market in 2021? Chainalysis says $41 billion, but DappRadar says $25 billion. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-01-06\/nft-market-surpassed-40-billion-in-2021-new-estimate-shows\"><i>Bloomberg<\/i><\/a><i>; <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/europe\/nft-sales-hit-25-billion-2021-growth-shows-signs-slowing-2022-01-10\/\"><i>Reuters<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>YouTube puts out an NFT proposal so self-evidently stupid that the newspaper reporting it calls it out: \u201cIt is unclear exactly what YouTube means when it says that creators can own creators\u2019 videos, since NFTs do not inherently transfer copyright to owners.\u201d [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/tech\/youtube-nft-fan-own-videos-b2012134.html\"><i>Independent<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>In the UK, HMRC makes its first seizure of NFTs, with other crypto assets, in lieu of unpaid VAT (sales tax). The perpetrators used stolen identities, burner phones, false addresses and fake invoices. This isn\u2019t <i>quite<\/i> use of NFTs in money-laundering \u2014 but it\u2019s close enough for a splashy headline. I got to go on BBC Radio 4 Today around 7:50am on Monday 14 February about this one, to explain to the Establishment what on earth an NFT was. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/business\/2022\/02\/13\/taxman-makes-first-ever-seizure-nfts\/\"><i>Daily Telegraph<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>Dan Olson interviewed about his hit video takedown of NFTs and crypto in general, \u201cLine Goes Up.\u201d &#8220;They&#8217;ll take a hypothetical application that doesn&#8217;t exist, that no one&#8217;s working on and might not even be possible, and treat it as though it&#8217;s already happening. Give themselves a gold star for having already done it, when no one&#8217;s even started.&#8221; [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/m7v5qq\/meet-the-guy-who-went-viral-on-youtube-for-explaining-how-nfts-crypto-are-a-poverty-trap\"><i>Vice<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>Phil Libin: Venture capitalists are pouring so much money into Web3 <i>because<\/i> it\u2019s useless and doesn\u2019t work. \u201cIn Web3 and crypto, they found the ultimate thing that you could put an infinite amount of money into because it doesn&#8217;t do anything, so there&#8217;s no natural limit, and it lets them turn those funds around quickly.\u201d [<a href=\"https:\/\/pitchbook.com\/news\/articles\/metaverse-web3-propaganda-phil-libin\"><i>Pitchbook<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>The Wall Street journal asks about Yats, a line of emoji-based NFTs. \u201cI could say this NFT represents a string of initials, or this NFT represents my butt. It would be exactly as meaningful as turning a Yat into an NFT,\u201d Mr. Gerard says. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/nft-yats-emoji-investment-11644267028\"><i>WSJ<\/i><\/a><i>, paywalled<\/i>]<\/p>\n<h3>Everybody still hates Binance<\/h3>\n<p>The SEC is investigating Binance US, its links to two market makers, Sigma Chain AG and Merit Peak Ltd, with \u201cties\u201d to Binance founder Changpeng Zhao (CZ), and to what degree Binance disclosed these links. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/sec-probes-trading-affiliates-of-crypto-giant-binances-u-s-arm-11644948162\"><i>WSJ<\/i><\/a><i>, paywalled<\/i>]<\/p>\n<p>Binance\u2019s attempts to manipulate US regulators were <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2020\/11\/16\/news-the-collapse-of-cred-binances-cunning-plan-new-us-regulators-bitcoin-miners-run-out-of-cash\/\">exposed in scathing Forbes coverage<\/a> of a leaked smoking-gun document in late 2020. <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2020\/11\/29\/news-defi-pickled-binance-sues-forbes-crypto-ponzi-via-underwater-scooter\/\">Binance sued Forbes<\/a> over the story \u2014 though there was no way they could win, and they <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2021\/03\/05\/news-india-crypto-ban-north-korea-bitmex-execs-to-appear-ibm-blockchain-dead-more-mcafee-charges\/\">dropped the suit<\/a> in February 2021.<\/p>\n<p>How to head off such calamities in the future? Well, Binance just put up $200 million to purchase a chunk of Forbes. One more name has been revealed \u2014 Avishai Ziv, a serial ICO &#8220;advisor&#8221; back in the day. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/court-lifts-gag-on-third-suspect-in-huge-crypto-case-after-suit-by-toi-others\/\"><i>Times of Israel<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>The Marshall Islands <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2021\/06\/04\/the-marshall-islands-sov-cryptocurrency-the-saga-winds-down\/\">abandoned its planned cryptocurrency<\/a> in June 2021. (It probably would have been bigger news if Nayib Bukele hadn\u2019t announced <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2021\/06\/06\/el-salvador-to-adopt-proprietary-payment-network-denominated-in-bitcoin\/\">El Salvador adopting Bitcoin<\/a> a few days later.) That story ended with the Marshalls looking into welcoming blockchain entrepreneurs in need of cover to the jurisdiction \u2014 \u2018cos the country is desperate. So they\u2019ve just announced that the Marshall Islands will recognise DAOs as legal entities, having passed the Non-Profit Entities Act 2021. [<a href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/marshall-islands-officially-recognizes-daos-as-legal-entities\"><i>CoinTelegraph<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>Romance scammers phish lonely people with fake pictures and personas, eventually asking for money, or suggesting a great investment you should get into.
