Your profile picture is displayed in a hexagon, rather than the usual circle. You can only set the NFT avatar in the iOS app, and your NFT has to be from a verified collection on OpenSea. [<a href=\"https:\/\/better.tw\/\"><i>Better TweetDeck<\/i><\/a>]<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>NFT Artist<\/b> &amp; Cryptobro Blocker \u2014 a web page that will block or mute from its list as you choose. Due to capacity issues, the app is not accepting new users until late February. [<a href=\"https:\/\/antsstyle.com\/nftcryptoblocker\/\"><i>NFT Artist &amp; Cryptobro Blocker<\/i><\/a>]<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>NFTBlocker<\/b> \u2014 a Firefox browser plug-in. The author recommends that most people use Better Tweetdeck instead. This is just the source code too. Justin Taylor, head of consumer product marketing at Twitter, really wants people to be able to use \u201cunverified\u201d NFT collections \u2014 that is, just steal some art and mint it as an NFT. [<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GrandMoffJoseph\/status\/1484445193973555200\"><i>Twitter<\/i><\/a><i>, <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20220120194634\/https:\/\/twitter.com\/TheSmarmyBum\/status\/1484249741667889152\"><i>archive<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>(I changed my own Twitter avatar to a pentagon, to show my allegiance to the fiat petrodollar.)<\/p>\n<h3>Good news from Russia<\/h3>\n<p>The Bank of Russia has issued a consultation paper that proposes a complete ban on cryptocurrency use or mining:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The growth of cryptocurrencies seriously jeopardises Russians\u2019 well-being and the stability of the financial system and causes threats associated with the use of cryptocurrencies for illicit settlements.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The bank proposes blocking financial institutions from touching cryptos, and blocking all buying or selling of cryptos with actual money. If crypto is a better payment system, then a CBDC will do the job just as well. The bank points to China as an example of how you can just kick crypto out if you really want to. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/finance\/russian-cbank-proposes-banning-cryptocurrencies-crypto-mining-2022-01-20\/\"><i>Reuters<\/i><\/a><i>; <\/i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbr.ru\/Content\/Document\/File\/132242\/Consultation_Paper_20012022_eng.pdf\"><i>CBR<\/i><\/a><i>, PDF, in English<\/i>]<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Ivan Chebeskov, director of the financial policy department of the Ministry of Finance, told a Russian crypto conference that he wants to regulate cryptos rather than ban them. \u201cWe need to give these technologies the opportunity to develop,\u201d he said, whatever that actually means. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rbc.ru\/crypto\/news\/61efdd1f9a794786d39b05c5\"><i>RBC<\/i><\/a><i>, in Russian<\/i>]<\/p>\n<p>The one man has cast his one vote \u2014 President Vladimir Putin favours the Ministry of Finance proposal to tax and regulate crypto, \u201caccording to three people familiar with the matter.\u201d Crypto mining would be restricted to regions with a surplus of electricity. The Bank of Russia criticised the Finance proposal. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-01-27\/putin-backs-crypto-mining-despite-bank-of-russia-s-hard-line\"><i>Bloomberg<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<h3>Why everybody hates Binance<\/h3>\n<p>Now up: parts 2 and 3 of the comedy gold series in which an undercover journalist gets offered a six-figure job as Binance&#8217;s Senior Regulatory Advisor, with completely made-up qualifications that nobody checked, and a fake photo on a fake LinkedIn.<\/p>\n<p>How could this happen? Basically, everyone in Binance\u2019s compliance department at present is an unqualified clown. &#8220;I was told that I should expect the environment at Binance to be \u2018disorganised\u2019 &#8230; Not wanting to send forged documentation, I simply did not send anything and told my contact at Binance that I was considering my options. They sent me the offer letter anyway.&#8221; Part 4 to come! [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.disruptionbanking.com\/2022\/01\/20\/how-i-bluffed-my-way-to-a-six-figure-job-offer-from-binances-regulatory-team-part-two\/\"><i>Disruption Banking<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>To be fair, Binance regards the compliance department as a sort of funny toy balloon mascot. Binance routinely keeps anti-money-laundering checks on its customers as weak as they think they can get away with. &#8220;Reduce KYC. Raise Limits. BEST COMBO.&#8221; They withhold information from regulators. They ignore the compliance department\u2019s recommendations. CZ wanted \u201cno kyc.\u201d [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/investigates\/special-report\/finance-crypto-currency-binance\/\"><i>Reuters<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<h3>I know nothing! Nothing!<\/h3>\n<p>Well, I certainly didn\u2019t expect Michael Patryn, of the late Canadian crypto exchange QuadrigaCX, to <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2022\/01\/27\/michael-patryn-of-quadrigacx-is-back-as-0xsifu-from-defi-protocol-wonderland\/\">show up again.<\/a> Perhaps he\u2019ll help Jennifer Robertson in her promotional tour for the book <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2021\/12\/23\/jennifer-robertson-bitcoin-widow-quadriga-i-know-nothing-nothing\/\"><i>Bitcoin Widow<\/i>.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Robertson was raked over the coals on The National, CBC&#8217;s flagship current affairs programme &mdash; including being asked why the hell she won&#8217;t just let Cotten&#8217;s alleged body be checked, if as politely as possible. Amy Castor\u2019s on this segment too; I didn\u2019t get on camera, but helped a bit with the research. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=KUHgjad9mWw&amp;t=1480s\"><i>YouTube<\/i><\/a><i>, 24:40 on<\/i>] CBC wrote up the segment as an article. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/nova-scotia\/quadriga-widow-jennifer-roberston-gerald-cotten-1.6318955\"><i>CBC<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>The Toronto Star has an interview with Robertson as well. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/business\/2022\/01\/18\/bitcoin-widow-hopes-book-dispels-rumours-and-conspiracy-talk-that-surged-after-husband-gerald-cottens-death.html\"><i>Toronto Star<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>CBC The Current with Matt Galloway spoke to Robertson. Galloway comes across as wondering just how naive Robertson was. Robertson won\u2019t authorise exhuming Cotten as it would just feed conspiracy theories. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/listen\/live-radio\/1-63-the-current\/clip\/15889994-quadriga-ceos-widow-discusses-death-missing-crypto-millions\"><i>CBC<\/i><\/a><i>, 01:38 to 21:10<\/i>]<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Galloway: \u201cDid you ever ask why hundred dollar bills were scattered around your house?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Robertson:\u00a0 \u201cIt was kind of a Gerry thing.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Amy Castor was also interviewed on CBC On The Coast about the collapse of Quadriga. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/listen\/live-radio\/1-46-on-the-coast\/clip\/15890160-new-book-called-bitcoin-widow\"><i>CBC<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p><i>Bitcoin Widow<\/i> was the No.&nbsp;6 best-seller in non-fiction in Canada for the week ending 26 January. I&#8217;ve still seen no proper reviews of it apart from mine and Amy&#8217;s. [<i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/entertainment\/books\/2022\/01\/26\/the-bestselling-books-in-canada-for-the-week-ending-jan-26-2022.html\">Toronto Star<\/a><\/i>]<\/p>\n<p>Stephen Kimber, who ghost-wrote <i>Bitcoin Widow<\/i>, asks just what the number-go-up enthusiasts who put their money into Bitcoin, and into Quadriga, were thinking. When the news came out in early 2019 about Quadriga collapsing, I remember there was very little public sympathy for Quadriga&#8217;s investors &mdash; I had Canadian interviewers asking me why anyone should care about these greedy dolts who wanted unregulated finance, and got it good and hard. And theft is bad &mdash; but I concur that it&#8217;s important to keep in mind that the victims were, in fact, for the most part, greedy dolts. [<i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.halifaxexaminer.ca\/featured\/whos-really-to-blame-for-the-quadrigacx-scandal\/\">Halifax Examiner<\/a><\/i>] <\/p>\n<h3>Regulatory clarity<\/h3>\n<p>SEC rejects First Trust SkyBridge\u2019s proposed Bitcoin ETF. Page 15 sets out the fundamental issue \u2014 none of the wash trading, whale manipulation, exchange information security or fraud, mining manipulation, misleading market information manipulation or issues with Tether that the SEC has objected to in previous proposals have been addressed. Anyone putting forward another Bitcoin ETF had better get around to all that, then. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sec.gov\/rules\/sro\/nysearca\/2022\/34-94006.pdf\"><i>SEC<\/i><\/a><i>, PDF<\/i>]<\/p>\n<p>The Bank of Thailand, the Thai Ministry of Finance and the SEC are restricting the use of cryptos as payments in Thailand. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bot.or.th\/English\/AboutBOT\/Activities\/Pages\/JointPress_25012022.aspx\"><i>BoT<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>In a new cybersecurity law, Myanmar\u2019s military junta will be banning VPNs and cryptocurrencies. Using cryptos will get you six to twelve months\u2019 jail. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2022\/01\/24\/myanmar_military_junta_bans_vpns_crypto\/\"><i>The Register<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>After <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2022\/01\/17\/news-el-salvador-phone-tapping-bitcoin-in-tonga-associated-press-nfts-books\/\">banning crypto advertising,<\/a> Singapore has shut down down all the crypto ATMs. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-01-19\/crypto-atms-halted-in-singapore-after-marketing-clampdown\"><i>Bloomberg<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>The SEC is looking into Celsius Network, Voyager Digital Ltd. and Gemini Trust Co. as part of an inquiry into companies that pay interest on cryptocurrencies. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-01-26\/crypto-lending-firms-celsius-network-gemini-face-sec-scrutiny\"><i>Bloomberg<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<h3>Industrial estate<\/h3>\n<p>There\u2019s a claim going around the crypto press that Google will be partnering with Coinbase and Bitpay!<\/p>\n<p>The <i>entire<\/i> claim is a throwaway in the last paras of this Bloomberg story about Google Pay: [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-01-19\/google-hires-paypal-vet-to-reset-strategy-after-banking-retreat\"><i>Bloomberg<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Tiptoeing into crypto also could help Google entice users. Google has partnered with companies, including Coinbase Global Inc. and BitPay Inc., to store crypto assets in digital cards, while still having users pay in traditional currencies. Ready said Google is looking to do more of these partnership, though the company still isn\u2019t accepting crypto for transactions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCrypto is something we pay a lot of attention to,\u201d he said. \u201cAs user demand and merchant demand evolves, we\u2019ll evolve with it.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In context, it&#8217;s talking about crypto debit cards via Google Pay. Which isn&#8217;t nothing, but it also isn&#8217;t new.<\/p>\n<h3>Wireless enthusiast intercepts government secret radio band and uncovers secrets and scandals of deceitful-type proportions<\/h3>\n<p>Decrypt dives into the \u201csecret\u201d Biden administration plot to &#8230; hand control of stablecoins to the banks! [<i>Decrypt, <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/3rpXT\"><i>archive<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>The article\u2019s thesis is that government hates crypto \u2018cos it\u2019s just too beautiful, OK. The piece reads like a particularly paranoid CoinDesk op-ed.<\/p>\n<p>Back here in reality, the US government has been shouting its concerns from the rooftops since the 2019 Libra hearings \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/libra\/\"><i>Libra Shrugged<\/i>,<\/a> chapters 10 and 13 \u2014 in the futile hope that anyone from crypto will listen.<\/p>\n<p>The US government ignored cryptocurrency until David Marcus and Mark Zuckerberg were stupid and arrogant enough to put their crypto project forward as a serious threat.<\/p>\n<p>You do understand that Libra got 100% of financial regulators&#8217; attention worldwide, right? Central banks are <i>still<\/i> worried that someone who isn&#8217;t a blithering idiot will try to do a systemic-scale private currency. Even the recent Bank of Russia report mentions Libra\/Diem on the third page.<\/p>\n<p>The Biden administration is not the Trump administration. But the opposition to Libra was bipartisan \u2014 that these crypto morons <i>cannot<\/i> be allowed to mess with the real economy.<\/p>\n<p>Libra showed the danger, and the bureaucracy didn&#8217;t forget with the new President. The previous President\u2019s Working Group on Financial Markets put out an <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2020\/12\/24\/news-kodakcoin-is-dead-xrp-rip-us-on-stablecoins-seasteading-fails-again\/\">excoriating report on stablecoins<\/a> in December 2020. The new administration\u2019s intentions are <i>milder.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>How do you think the guardians of the dollar were going to respond? Everything that\u2019s happening now started then.<\/p>\n<p>Crypto has made itself a matter of national security \u2014 ransomwaring the Colonial Pipeline is an example of how to be clever, but not smart. Plans to deal with crypto as a national security issue have been in progress since the Trump administration \u2014 and Biden looks to be implementing some of these plans in the coming weeks. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.barrons.com\/articles\/white-house-executive-action-regulate-cryptos-national-security-51643312454\"><i>Barron\u2019s<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>The US government\u2019s thinking on crypto is only \u201csecret\u201d if you\u2019ve been trying extremely hard to pay no attention for years at a time, and prefer crypto paranoia to reading things.<\/p>\n<h3>Things happen<\/h3>\n<p>I added this to the piece a couple of days ago about <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2022\/01\/26\/facebooks-libra-is-still-dead-diem-to-be-sold-off-for-spare-parts\/\">Diem being sold off for spare parts,<\/a> but I\u2019ll note it here too \u2014 the Wall Street Journal reports that Silvergate Capital (the holding company for Silvergate Bank) is buying Diem\u2019s \u201ctechnology\u201d for \u201cabout $200 million, a person familiar with the matter said.\u201d I would just love to see what Silvergate thinks it\u2019s getting <i>two hundred million dollars&#8217;<\/i> worth of. Or if there\u2019s some other reason to throw $200 million down this black hole. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/facebooks-cryptocurrency-venture-to-wind-down-sell-assets-11643248799\"><i>WSJ<\/i><\/a><i>, paywalled<\/i>]<\/p>\n<p>The International Monetary Fund has concluded its 2021 Article IV consultation with El Salvador. The IMF thinks El Salvador had a good COVID response, has too much public debt, and should remove Bitcoin\u2019s legal tender status. The country\u2019s much-desired $1 billion loan didn\u2019t even get a mention. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imf.org\/en\/News\/Articles\/2022\/01\/25\/pr2213-el-salvador-imf-executive-board-concludes-2021-article-iv-consultation\"><i>IMF<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>Crypto mining in Svaneti, Georgia is causing power outages. Unlike Alipay or WeChat Pay, there is no limit on transaction amounts for the highest level of Know-Your Customer. (You can set limits for sub-wallets.) And under RMB 2000, your transactions are <i>anonymous<\/i> \u2014 the PBOC doesn\u2019t care. This is not the case for Alipay or WeChat Pay. I\u2019d like to see official word on that anonymity, but the key point is that the app is competitive with the incumbents.
