Now Citizenlab has a full report: &#8220;Project Torogoz: Extensive Hacking of Media &amp; Civil Society in El Salvador with Pegasus Spyware.&#8221; [<a href=\"https:\/\/citizenlab.ca\/2022\/01\/project-torogoz-extensive-hacking-media-civil-society-el-salvador-pegasus-spyware\/\"><i>CitizenLab<\/i><\/a><i>; <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/reuters.com\/technology\/salvadoran-journalists-phones-hacked-with-spyware-report-finds-2022-01-13\/\"><i>Reuters summary<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>CitizenLab started investigating in September 2021. When Mallers talks about dollars here, he means tethers. The main Bitcoin proponent in Tonga is former Member of Parliament Lord Fusitu&#8217;a, who believes Bitcoin will make remittances cheaper. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.afr.com\/markets\/currencies\/bitcoin-dream-brewing-in-tonga-20210929-p58vmo\"><i>AFR<\/i><\/a><i>, 2021; <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/tonga-to-copy-el-salvador-bill-making-bitcoin-legal-tender-says-former-mp\"><i>CoinTelegraph<\/i><\/a><i>, 2021; <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LordFusitua\/status\/1481101011506774016\">Twitter thread<\/a><\/i>]<\/p>\n<p>I expect Bitcoin will be on the back burner for a bit, while Tonga deals with being flooded by the biggest volcanic eruption of the twenty-first century \u2014 which cut off the country\u2019s Internet cable. Magical Internet money requires Internet.<\/p>\n<h3>Baby\u2019s on fire<\/h3>\n<p>Bitfinex Securities, who will be offering <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2022\/01\/04\/el-salvador-volcano-bond-laws-chivo-still-doesnt-work-corruption\/\">El Salvador\u2019s Volcano Bonds<\/a> later this year, are now offering the Blockstream Mining Note \u2014 securitised cloud mining. There are 25 places, which will cost 350,000 EUR each \u2014 of actual money..<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy securitizing hashrate on the Liquid Network, investors can adjust their exposure to Bitcoin mining based on market conditions by trading the BMN tokens on the secondary market.\u201d The graph of expected returns on the Blockstream page seems to assume a steady BTC hash rate, not one that rises as it has for the past decade. [<em><a href=\"https:\/\/capital.bitfinex.com\/bmn\">Bitfinex<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/blockstream.com\/finance\/bmn\/\">Blockstream<\/a><\/em>]<\/p>\n<p>Norton Antivirus <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2021\/06\/16\/news-stopping-ransomware-china-hates-miners-ecuador-cbdc-history-nfts-still-too-hard-to-buy\/\">added a crypto miner last year.<\/a> Yes, a crypto miner in the antivirus software itself. Norton\u2019s also bought Avast, so I\u2019m sure we can look forward to that going crypto in due course. Frankly, the built-in Windows Defender antivirus is about as good as any of them. [<a href=\"https:\/\/digiconomist.net\/dogecoin-energy-consumption\"><i>Digiconomist<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<h3>Corporate monkey laundering<\/h3>\n<p>The Associated Press is doing NFTs of famous AP photographs, on NFT marketplace Xooa. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ap.org\/press-releases\/2022\/ap-to-launch-nft-marketplace-built-by-xooa\"><i>AP press release<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>Dwayne Desaulniers, the nontechnical executive in charge of the project, has tweeted a list of claims about NFTs: [<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DwayneDD\/status\/1481026580474388483\"><i>Twitter<\/i><\/a><i>, <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/2kDo0\"><i>archive<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We believe registering our photos on a blockchain greatly preserves their value, reduces the economic impact of digital theft, helps protect photographers income and helps us fight deep fakes and misinformation.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>These claims are so manifestly and transparently false that selling a product on the basis of them would constitute fraud. The only possible personal defence might be that Desaulniers literally does not understand the words he\u2019s been told to say.<\/p>\n<p>Intellectual property lawyer Mike Dunford does a Twitter thread on the planned NFT marketplace, which is dubious even by NFT standards. [<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/questauthority\/status\/1481327882601484288\"><i>Twitter<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>Dunford has a chat with Desaulniers \u2014 who may not know anything about technology, but also doesn\u2019t seem to know anything about copyright, nor about how not to offer unregistered securities to US retail buyers. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-01-17\/singapore-tells-crypto-firms-not-to-market-services-to-public\"><i>Bloomberg<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>The State Bank of Pakistan and the federal government of Pakistan have recommended a complete ban on the use of cryptocurrencies in the country. The Federal Investigation Agency launched an investigation into crypto exchange Binance in December. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.samaa.tv\/money\/2022\/01\/sbp-govt-pakistan-ban-cryptocurrencies\/\"><i>SAMAA<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>Spain is requiring all crypto advertising to warn investors they may lose all their money, and that crypto assets are unregulated and may be inappropriate for retail investors. Campaigns reaching over 100,000 people must be registered with the regulator, CMNV. The rules also apply to social media influencers. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-01-17\/spain-clamps-down-on-crypto-advertising-with-order-to-flag-risks\"><i>Bloomberg<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>In the UK, the House of Lords Economics Affairs Committee has issued its report on central bank digital currencies. The title is \u201cCentral bank digital currencies: a solution in search of a problem?\u201d \u2014 and notes \u201cWe have yet to hear a convincing case for why the UK needs a retail CBDC.\u201d The report says that Parliament must decide on whether to introduce a British CBDC \u2014 the Bank of England can\u2019t just decide this by itself. It comes across as a grinding book about horrible people \u2014 mostly the early Ethereum crowd \u2014 which will be no surprise to anyone who\u2019s encountered crypto true believers.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve spent five years now attempting to deobfuscate this firehose of nonsense, and I find myself repeatedly just saying that 2+2 makes 4, not 5 or 666 or whatever today&#8217;s crypto pumper needs it to make. I see my error in <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/libra\/\"><i>Libra Shrugged:<\/i><\/a> I tried to explain how the stuff that collapsed in the 2008 financial crisis worked in comprehensible terms \u2014 I should have said it was all verrr&#8217; complicated and referred readers to my white paper. (I prefer my way.)<\/p>\n<p>McGinty ends up concluding that <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2021\/07\/22\/summer-reading-for-the-cryptocurrency-skeptic-pt-1\/\">David Golumbia<\/a> was just right about everything. It\u2019s a good review, you should read it. [<a href=\"https:\/\/thebaffler.com\/salvos\/everywhere-in-blockchains-mcginty\"><i>The Baffler<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p><strong>Update:<\/strong> I did end up buying a copy of <em>The Cryptopians<\/em>, as a reference on the early Ethereum guys. It&#8217;s decently-written, but McGinty is right about the characters.<\/p>\n<p>The Globe &amp; Mail has run a very dull interview with Jennifer Robertson of QuadrigaCX that says nothing. It says \u201cexclusive,\u201d so let\u2019s hope it really is the last.
