[<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/12\/23\/movies\/dead-mans-switch-a-crypto-mystery-review.html\"><i>New York Times<\/i><\/a><i>; <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/m.imdb.com\/name\/nm12918655\/\"><i>IMDb<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<h3>Regulatory clarity, mate<\/h3>\n<p>Suburban Australians have long been incredible suckers for any get-rich scheme you can name, since the 1960s \u2014 pyramid schemes, multilevel marketing, and now <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2021\/12\/09\/news-craig-wright-loses-baseball-bitcoin-kickstarter-on-the-blockchain-australian-crypto-scams\/\">crypto scams.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The government represents the people \u2014 so they\u2019re being gullible suckers too. The Treasurer, Josh Frydenberg, has promised a \u201cmassive shakeup\u201d to crypto regulation. Even as he looks a bit like he doesn&#8217;t quite understand the words he&#8217;s reading out. There will be some regulation on crypto exchanges, so that&#8217;s nice. [<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/JVl6zSdw58I?t=180\"><i>Youtube<\/i><\/a><i>, from 3:00<\/i>]<\/p>\n<p>Frydenberg and the Senate also want to force through a CBDC \u2014 even though the Reserve Bank of Australia has already said a CBDC <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2021\/11\/28\/news-celsius-arrest-el-salvador-journalists-hacked-senate-vs-stablecoins\/\">still doesn&#8217;t have a use case<\/a> \u2014 and add some ill-specified corporate recognition of DAOs. The DAO proposal is directly inspired by the Wyoming legislation to that effect. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.afr.com\/companies\/financial-services\/payments-crackdown-on-big-tech-20211207-p59fk2\"><i>AFR<\/i><\/a><i>; <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.afr.com\/companies\/financial-services\/senate-report-proposes-model-to-regulate-the-crypto-economy-20211020-p591jh\"><i>AFR<\/i><\/a><i>; <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/parlinfo.aph.gov.au\/parlInfo\/download\/committees\/reportsen\/024747\/toc_pdf\/Finalreport.pdf;fileType=application%2Fpdf\"><i>Senate report<\/i><\/a><i>, PDF<\/i>]<\/p>\n<h3>Einst\u00fcrzende neubauten<\/h3>\n<p>The state of New South Wales in Australia has a problem \u2014 shoddy property developers using their own shoddy private certification authorities to push through shoddy buildings.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a massive scandal of defective apartment buildings \u2014 and developers who go \u201cbankrupt\u201d before legal action can be brought, then everyone involved reforms the next day as a new corporate entity.<\/p>\n<p>This happens even with allegedly classy buildings \u2014 see this Google review, for example: \u201cFrom the first to last day moving, my apartment had constant issues. The overall attention to detail is horrendous &#8230; Amenities are world class but unusable due to being under constant maintenance.\u201d [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/reviews\/@-33.8241646,151.1971451,17z\/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!14m4!1m3!1m2!1s102220470707682776196!2s0x0:0x6ffee7f7e1f02f7?hl=en-AU\"><i>Google Maps<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>So let\u2019s fix a scam \u2014 with <i>two<\/i> scams! We\u2019ll take a blockchain derived from the Australian Securities Exchange\u2019s years-late trading blockchain, that still isn\u2019t live \u2014 presumably Hyperledger Fabric with smart contracts in DAML. Then we&#8217;ll bung a massive wad of cash to KPMG, and also involve one of the allegedly questionable property developers in question \u2014 and build &#8230; a slow database, administered by a central government entity. There\u2019s also \u201cAI\u201d in there too, for some reason. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/nsw-government-clamps-down-on-apartment-building-defects-using-blockchain-and-ai\/\"><i>ZDNet<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>The entire point of governments is to be the trusted third party. This is a database.<\/p>\n<p>We <i>could<\/i> unwind the incredibly flawed private building certification regime, and empower a regulator to enforce the standards &#8230; or we could delay any effective action from happening with a crypto handwave.<\/p>\n<h3>Buddy, they won\u2019t even let me funge it<\/h3>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2021\/12\/04\/news-square-goes-block-wikipedia-nft-el-salvador-bitcoin-city-plans-where-the-chinese-mining-rigs-went\/\">unofficial Wikipedia NFT<\/a> sold for $750,000. I can probably reveal now that the numbers Christie\u2019s were talking to Jimmy Wales about the NFT fetching were on the order of $5 million. The strawberry iMac that Wikipedia was created on sold for $187,500, which is excellent actually. [<i><a href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/first-wikipedia-edit-nft-sells-at-christie-s-for-750k\">CoinTelegraph<\/a><\/i>]<\/p>\n<p>OpenSea used to have a notification form for blatant theft of artists\u2019 work to make NFTs. They\u2019ve taken that down, and now demand full DMCA contact details from the artists, which they pass to the NFT scammers. But a much quicker workaround is to send your DMCA notice direct to Google, where the images are hosted \u2014 so NFT buyers can delight in their cryptographic tokens pointing to a \u201c404 File Not Found.\u201d [<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CoinersTakingLs\/status\/1473940479372759043\"><i>Twitter<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>Serial <i>over-promiser<\/i> Peter Molyneux, long-past creator of actually popular games such as <i>Black and White<\/i> and, for the past decade, founder of multiple failed Kickstarters, is now selling imaginary land in a Play-To-Earn virtual world game called Legacy \u2014 \u201cthe first ever Blockchain Business Sim.\u201d I&#8217;m sure that appeals to someone. He\u2019s so far taken in 13,365 ETH \u2014 about $54 million \u2014 of very dumb money. [<a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/gaming\/2021\/12\/peter-molyneux-raises-54m-on-promise-of-play-to-earn-nft-game-legacy\/\"><i>Ars Technica<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>Ubisoft\u2019s gaming NFTs are not taking off like a rocket. As of 20 December, there had been 15 sales total, to a value of 94.49 XTZ, or $396. Ubisoft forgot the bit where the NFT \u201cmarket\u201d is fake, and you need to wash-trade your token up to lure in the suckers. [<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/lizaledwards\/status\/1472778732578299912\"><i>Twitter thread<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHostility towards NFTs has been a rare unifying factor across gamers of all stripes.\u201d Destroy NFTs in gaming with the Doom mod that lets you mass-murder the Bored Apes by screenshotting them with your hand-held camera. I did learn that \u201cThe Bored Apes themselves are a shoddy appropriation of the Japanese streetwear brand A Bathing Ape.\u201d [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/22824387\/bored-ape-yacht-club-nft-party-new-york\"><i>The Verge<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>Gawker: \u201cNFT art combines the nuanced social awareness of computer programmers with the soulful whimsy of hedge fund managers. It\u2019s art for people whose imaginations have been captured by a new kind of money you can do on the computer.\u201d [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gawker.com\/culture\/the-future-is-useless-expensive\"><i>Gawker<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<h3>The Third Man<\/h3>\n<p>The FT does a deep dive on Jean-Louis van der Velde, CEO of Bitfinex and Tether \u2014 an all-but-invisible man of mystery, to the point that some of us wondered if he even existed. He does, and FT have a rundown on his career. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/4576f34f-fcd6-4bef-bef4-d4a7ad49c5fc\"><i>FT<\/i><\/a><i>, paywalled<\/i>]<\/p>\n<p>Van der Velde has mostly lived in Hong Kong since going to university in Taiwan in his twenties. He was in sales at various electronics companies through the 1990s and 2000s. A creditor summarises van der Velde\u2019s time at Huashun Electronics in Shenzhen: \u201cThe company was poorly managed and it could not repay the money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He generously gives his time in the academic world:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Shih-wei Liao, an associate professor at the National Taiwan University who has known the Tether chief for more than 30 years, said van der Velde had made a big contribution to students on a blockchain course they ran together, particularly in teaching ethics.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Tether were most upset by this story.
