[<i><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/rleshner\/status\/1443380518498848768\">Twitter<\/a><\/i>]<\/p>\n<p>Compound founder Robert Leshner showed his exemplary customer service chops by asking his customers to give it back \u2014 \u201cOtherwise, it&#8217;s being reported as income to the IRS, and most of you are doxxed.\u201d [<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/rleshner\/status\/1443730726751506432\"><i>Twitter<\/i><\/a><i>, <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20211003190526\/https:\/\/twitter.com\/rleshner\/status\/1443730726751506432\"><i>archive<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>That is: he threatened his users that they would have to &#8230; obey the law. <i>Paying taxes<\/i> was the most powerful threat Leshner could think of. I suppose this is getting back to Bitcoin\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/the-conspiracist-gold-bug-economics-of-bitcoin\/\">libertarian roots.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Two hours later, Leshner tweeted that &#8220;this was a bone-headed tweet\/approach. That&#8217;s on me&#8221; \u2014 though not actually apologising as such. [<i><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/rleshner\/status\/1443759189722116097\">Twitter<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20211001020635\/https:\/\/twitter.com\/rleshner\/status\/1443759189722116097\">archive<\/a><\/i>]<\/p>\n<p>In June, Leshner had tweeted: \u201cCrying to meatspace courts deeply undermines the \u2018code is law\u2019 principles that DeFi was founded on. This is a slippery slope that ends with the end of DeFi.\u201d [<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/rleshner\/status\/1405337567139139584\"><i>Twitter<\/i><\/a><i>, <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210617013256\/https:\/\/twitter.com\/rleshner\/status\/1405337567139139584\"><i>archive<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>So blame Robert if the \u201ccan\u2019t sue me, bro\u201d kayfabe breaks.<\/p>\n<p>The next thing that needs to happen is for the IRS to subpoena the very touchable, venture capital funded, company Compound as it successfully did the Coinbase and <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2021\/05\/22\/news-everybody-hates-chia-defi100-rugpull-china-versus-mining-china-versus-crypto\/\">Kraken<\/a> crypto exchanges.<\/p>\n<h3>Fainting goats<\/h3>\n<p>In El Salvador, President Bukele has decreed that gasoline will be 20c\/gallon cheaper if you pay with Chivo. That will <i>definitely<\/i> attract users. If the payment network can be made to work reliably. [<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nayibbukele\/status\/1443410462129983490\"><i>Twitter<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>Bukele has released statistics on how Chivo\u2019s doing. 142 new users per minute! 57 millisecond latency! 65,437 transactions in the air any given second! Bukele notes: \u201cRemember a single transaction takes several secs. Don\u2019t try to figure out total daily transactions with this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even assuming several seconds for a transaction, Chivo would be doing more transactions a day than Visa does worldwide. Someone\u2019s feeding Bukele numbers that please him, but which fall apart under the slightest examination. [<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nayibbukele\/status\/1442533230540886019\"><i>Twitter<\/i><\/a><i>; <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nayibbukele\/status\/1442624279028408321\"><i>Twitter<\/i><\/a><i>; <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Chrisjcom\/status\/1444403704640249864\"><i>Twitter<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>Bitcoin Magazine put up a picture on their Twitter of a \u201cBitcoin\u201d store called \u201cGBTC Finance\u201d and featuring clothes and keyrings and so on covered in Bitcoin logos \u2014 and tagged it \u201cJust another day in El Salvador.\u201d The store is actually in Barcelona in Spain. And only accepts filthy fiat in euros for all its Bitcoin logo merchandise. [<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CryptoWhale\/status\/1443444511137533957\"><i>Twitter<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<h3>Regulatory clarity, Chinese edition<\/h3>\n<p>In spectacularly good news for Bitcoin, China has brought exemplary regulatory clarity to cryptocurrency! All financial transactions related to cryptocurrency are now illegal. [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbc.gov.cn\/goutongjiaoliu\/113456\/113469\/4348521\/index.html\"><i>PBOC<\/i><\/a><i>, in Chinese; <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-09-24\/china-deems-all-crypto-related-transactions-illegal-in-crackdown\"><i>Bloomberg<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>The People&#8217;s Bank of China <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2021\/05\/22\/news-everybody-hates-chia-defi100-rugpull-china-versus-mining-china-versus-crypto\/\">severely tightened regulations on crypto in May.<\/a> This is much more of the same, with multiple other government agencies, including law enforcement agencies, signing the notice.<\/p>\n<p>PBOC has hated crypto for a long time \u2014 they think crypto is just speculation, and they worry it could affect the real economy.<\/p>\n<p>PBOC <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2017\/09\/16\/china-tethers-and-whats-happened-to-the-bitcoin-price-in-the-past-few-days\/\">kicked out the exchanges in September 2017<\/a> \u2014 but you could still buy and sell crypto like any other property.<\/p>\n<p>Mining continued \u2014 because the provinces like selling electricity \u2014 until May 2021, when the provinces were put on notice that they had to meet national CO2 goals.<\/p>\n<p>The new notice specifically bans crypto mining. The province of Inner Mongolia seized 10,100 mining rigs. [<a href=\"https:\/\/coindesk.com\/policy\/2021\/09\/27\/inner-mongolia-seizes-10100-mining-rigs-from-government-tech-park\/\"><i>CoinDesk<\/i><\/a>] And two large Ethereum mining pools, SparkPool and BeePool. have shut down, dropping the hash rate by 5%. [<a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/82123\/another-major-ethereum-mining-pool-shut-down-due-china-crypto-ban\"><i>Decrypt<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<h3>Fly-tipping on Twitter<\/h3>\n<p>Twitter will be letting you tip other users in Bitcoin! If you want to use Strike.<\/p>\n<p>Twitter added the \u201ctip jar\u201d feature in May. If an account is set up to receive tips, you can click on the dollar-note icon, and select a payment channel; you\u2019ll be redirected to the payment website in question.<\/p>\n<p>The motivation was all the poor and marginalised people with pinned tweets listing how to send them money to live. So Twitter started this feature with \u201ccreators, journalists, experts, and nonprofits.\u201d [<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.twitter.com\/en_us\/topics\/product\/2021\/introducing-tip-jar\"><i>Twitter<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>Twitter doesn\u2019t touch the transaction at all \u2014 Know-Your-Customer and anti-money-laundering are between you and the payment provider.<\/p>\n<p>The help page says that &#8220;Twitter will not receive any portion of these payments&#8221;\u00a0 \u2014 but that wording looks carefully chosen not to preclude Twitter from shaking down payment providers to be listed at all. [<a href=\"http:\/\/help.twitter.com\/en\/using-twitter\/tips\"><i>Twitter<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>The tip jar icon is now being rolled out to everyone \u2014 and Strike has been added as a payment provider. Tipping is not visible on the web interface or Android app as yet; I\u2019m told some users can see it on iPhones. [<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.twitter.com\/en_us\/topics\/product\/2021\/bringing-tips-to-everyone\"><i>Twitter<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>Adding Bitcoin tips on Twitter isn&#8217;t user-driven. It&#8217;s Jack Dorsey doing a deal to add a feature because he likes the idea of it \u2014 not to provide a payment channel that satisfies the needs of people who aren&#8217;t bitcoiners.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s possible that bitcoiners will start using the tipping feature performatively. I&#8217;m not sure it has legs, though.<\/p>\n<p>Whenever there&#8217;s a new channel for money transmission, the most creative users are crooks. The keenest users will be the people who currently run Twitter Bitcoin scams.<\/p>\n<p>Twitter will then claim they had nothing to do with it \u2014 except the bit where Twitter bring the scammers and victims together, and supply the scammers with a ready crop of victims.<\/p>\n<p>New Money Review quoted me on Twitter\u2019s exciting new old feature. [<a href=\"https:\/\/newmoneyreview.com\/index.php\/2021\/09\/24\/twitter-launches-bitcoin-tipping\/\"><i>New Money Review<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<h3>The iFinex Expanded Universe<\/h3>\n<p>Tether boosters have been talking up their <i>great victory!<\/i> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2020\/02\/06\/news-iota-massive-adoption-mastercard-v-libra-drm-in-jpeg-plans-reggie-fowler-plea-deal-fails-more-silk-road-busts-ico-grace-period-the-bitcoin-market\/\">consolidated<\/a> antitrust class action suit against the iFinex companies, in which plaintiffs claim that Tether and Bitfinex issued unbacked tethers to artificially inflate the price of Bitcoin.<\/p>\n<p>iFinex and Reggie Fowler \u2014 Tether and Bitfinex\u2019s money mule until he was <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2019\/05\/02\/crypto-capital-and-bitfinexs-missing-millions-and-reggie-fowler\/\">busted in 2019<\/a> \u2014 had brought <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2020\/11\/10\/news-bitcoin-goes-up-reggie-fowlers-lawyers-quit-pokemon-ancaps-buy-a-plague-ship\/\">a motion to dismiss the claim.<\/a> The judge, Katherine Polk Failla, dismissed some claims \u2014 but others stand.<\/p>\n<p>This does not mean the claims have been found to be true \u2014 it just means the original suit presented sufficiently substantial allegations to go forward.<\/p>\n<p>Tether\u2019s claimed win is that Judge Failla did in fact dismiss claims under anti-racketeering law RICO \u2014 the court found that the harm the plaintiffs suffered was sufficiently distant from alleged criminal acts such as wire fraud that they couldn\u2019t bring that particular claim.<\/p>\n<p>These claims stand: three Sherman Act monopolisation claims; Commodities Act claims regarding market manipulation and principal-agent liability against Reggie Fowler; and common law fraud.<\/p>\n<p>These claims were dismissed: one Sherman Act monopolisation claim; Commodities Act claims regarding principal-agent liability against Tether and Bitfinex; RICO claims; and common law fraud in representing USDT as being backed by dollars.<\/p>\n<p>The defendants must now answer the Amended Complaint by 28 October 2021, and the parties must file a case management plan and joint status letter by 18 November 2021. No, not the one it\u2019s been running since 2009, called \u201cBitcoin\u201d \u2014 this one was a Bitcoin doubler scam. Site operator Cobra confirmed the compromise, and took the site down while trying to work out how the hacker had got in. [<a href=\"https:\/\/cryptonews.com\/news\/bitcoinorg-attacked-by-double-your-bitcoin-scammers.htm\"><i>CryptoNews<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>Kentucky orders an emergency cease-and-desist against crypto lender Celsius to stop offering interest-bearing accounts. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theblockcrypto.com\/linked\/118618\/kentucky-regulator-orders-celsius-stop-offering-crypto-accounts\"><i>The Block<\/i><\/a><i>; <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/kfi.ky.gov\/Documents\/Celsius%20Network%20LLC%202021AH00024.pdf\"><i>Kentucky Department of Financial Institutions<\/i><\/a><i>, PDF, <\/i><a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210924005548\/https:\/\/kfi.ky.gov\/Documents\/Celsius%20Network%20LLC%202021AH00024.pdf\"><i>archive<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>Customers of popular crypto exchange Coinbase complaining about money disappearing from their accounts earlier this year seem to have been correct \u2014 Coinbase has disclosed that SMS-based multi-factor authentication was bypassed for 6,000 customers between April and May 2021. Coinbase is reimbursing the customers in question.
