This fresh leak outlines how to introduce the Col\u00f3n-Dollar, pay welfare subsidies with the system, and use QR codes for daily transactions in shops. That is: they presented a completely generic electronic payment system, that doesn\u2019t benefit from cryptocurrency in any way.<\/p>\n<p>(Reader tv comments: &#8220;The first slide in that presentation is so generic and slapped together that they neglected to replace the Euro sign with a dollar sign.&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>The story is in Spanish, but the leaked slides are in English. The presentation is nine slides at the bottom of the page on El Faro \u2014 you need to swipe sideways to go to the next slide. [<a href=\"https:\/\/especial.elfaro.net\/labs\/cripto-colon\"><i>El Faro<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Cryptoassets as National Currency? A Step Too Far&#8221; by Tobias Adrian and Rhoda Weeks-Brown, IMF. It&#8217;s clear from how Adrian and Weeks-Brown talk about &#8220;cryptoassets,&#8221; and that the one they name is &#8220;Bitcoin,&#8221; that this is about El Salvador and nothing else. This is a perfect response from the people who know about these things, and Adrian in particular \u2014 who wrote a paper in May 2019 that pretty closely anticipated Facebook\u2019s June 2019 plan for Libra. I don&#8217;t expect President Bukele to pay very much attention. [<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.imf.org\/2021\/07\/26\/cryptoassets-as-national-currency-a-step-too-far\/\"><i>IMF<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<h3>Everybody still hates Binance<\/h3>\n<p>How cryptocurrency exchanges work:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Withdrawals are temporarily unavailable due to unscheduled scheduled maintenance.<\/li>\n<li>Funds are absolutely safe.<\/li>\n<li>Scurrilous rumours that we have been hacked, or \u201chacked,\u201d are entirely untrue, and we will sue anyone spreading such.<\/li>\n<li>To file as an unsecured creditor, please contact our receivers, Grabbit, Skimm &amp; Runne Accountants, at their Mail Boxes Etc in the Caymans.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Good news for Binance \u2014 the Securities Commission of Malaysia officially recognises Binance! And CZ personally! The Securities Commission has announced actions against Binance for &#8220;illegally operating a Digital Asset Exchange (DAX)&#8221; \u2014 Binance is not registered in Malaysia.\u00a0[<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sc.com.my\/resources\/media\/media-release\/sc-takes-enforcement-actions-on-binance-for-illegally-operating-in-malaysia\"><i>press release<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>The action is against Binance Holdings Limited (Cayman Islands), Binance Digital Limited (UK), Binance UAB (Lithuania), Binance Asia Services Pte Ltd (Singapore), and Changpeng Zhao himself. Binance must disable binance.com and its mobile app in Malaysia by 8 August, stop all marketing and email to Malaysians, and restrict Malaysians from Binance&#8217;s Telegram group. CZ is personally ordered to make sure these all happen.<\/p>\n<p>Binance was included on the Securities Commission\u2019s Investor Alert List in July 2020. The list also contains a pile of &#8220;potential clone entities&#8221; using &#8220;Binance&#8221; in their names. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sc.com.my\/regulation\/enforcement\/investor-alerts\/sc-investor-alerts\/investor-alert-list\"><i>SC<\/i><\/a><i>, <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210730110919\/https:\/\/www.sc.com.my\/regulation\/enforcement\/investor-alerts\/sc-investor-alerts\/investor-alert-list\"><i>archive<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>The Securities Commission finishes: &#8220;Those who currently have accounts with Binance are strongly urged to immediately cease trading through its platforms and to withdraw all their investments immediately.&#8221; Couldn&#8217;t put it better myself.<\/p>\n<p>Binance is stopping margin trading against euros, pounds or Australian dollars from 10 August, and has stopped all margin trading in any currency in Germany, Italy and the Netherlands. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/china\/binance-stops-crypto-margin-trading-against-pound-aussie-dollar-euro-2021-07-26\/\"><i>Reuters<\/i><\/a><i>; <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/crypto-exchange-binance-wind-down-futures-derivatives-offerings-europe-2021-07-30\/\"><i>Reuters<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>Binance is totally not insolvent! They just won&#8217;t give anyone their cryptos back because they&#8217;re being <i>super<\/i>-compliant. KYC\/AML laws are very important to Binance, especially if you want to get your money back after suspicious activity on your account \u2014 such as pressing the \u201cwithdraw\u201d button. Please send more KYC. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.binance.com\/en\/support\/announcement\/9df8225c061b455da5c7cc293cd08a70\"><i>Binance<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>CZ is looking for a patsy to stand up front while he keeps collecting the money \u2014 a replacement CEO for Binance, with a \u201cstrong regulatory background,\u201d so CZ can \u201ccontribute to Binance and the BNB ecosystem. I don\u2019t have to be CEO to do that.\u201d [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/binances-cz-is-looking-for-his-replacement-as-exchange-gets-regulatory-house-in-order\"><i>CoinDesk<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<h3>The Long Blockchain of Bitcoin ETFs<\/h3>\n<p>Goldman Sachs proposes a \u201cDeFi and Blockchain Equity\u201d exchange-traded fund! [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sec.gov\/Archives\/edgar\/data\/1479026\/000119312521224388\/d176692d485apos.htm\"><i>SEC filing<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The Goldman Sachs Innovate DeFi and Blockchain Equity ETF (the \u201cFund\u201d) seeks to provide investment results that closely correspond, before fees and expenses, to the performance of the Solactive Decentralized Finance and Blockchain Index (the \u201cIndex\u201d).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Solactive doesn\u2019t have an index of that name. Solactive told CryptoNews that Goldman would be using their \u201cSolactive Blockchain Technology Performance Index\u201d \u2014 which is a list of global tech companies that have, at most, put out a blockchain-themed press release. No Riot Blockchain, no Microstrategy, no Coinbase \u2014 instead, we have Nokia (who?) and Accenture. When a client thinks they want \u201cblockchain\u201d exposure, the advisor could just recommend this. [<a href=\"https:\/\/cryptonews.com\/news\/goldman-sachs-defi-etf-prompts-confusion-on-what-it-really-i-11211.htm\"><i>CryptoNews<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>Solactive later told CryptoNews that they were putting together a new index for Goldman\u2019s ETF. Though the SEC filling says that the ETF is &#8220;not sponsored, promoted, sold or supported in any other manner by Solactive AG.&#8221; We\u2019ll see what the eventual list looks like.<\/p>\n<h3>Regulatory clarity<\/h3>\n<p>The New Jersey <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2021\/07\/25\/news-el-salvador-colon-dollar-everybody-hates-blockfi-tether-does-cnbc\/\">cease and desist order against BlockFi<\/a> offering its BlockFi Interest Accounts has been delayed, and will not go into effect before 2 September 2021. [<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BlockFi\/status\/1420373376582004742\"><i>Twitter<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>Vermont\u2019s Department of Financial Regulation has also asked BlockFi to show cause within 30 days why the company should not be issued a cease and desist on its BlockFi Interest Accounts. Vermont asked BlockFi about this back in January 2021, and considered BlockFi\u2019s response \u201cunsatisfactory.\u201d [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/blockfi-says-vermont-has-joined-ranks-of-states-probing-the-crypto-lender\"><i>CoinDesk<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>South Korea changes its tax rules to make it easier to seize crypto to pay back taxes. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/skorea-toughen-rules-collect-cryptocurrencies-tax-dodgers-2021-07-26\/\"><i>Reuters<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>The new Australian Securities and Investments Commission chair, Joseph Longo, warns about unregulated cryptocurrency trading \u201cand other economic threats to pandemic recovery.\u201d He means investment scams. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2021-07-29\/asic-chair-joseph-longo-interview-cryptocurrencies-scams\/100332560\"><i>ABC<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<h3>I fought the law<\/h3>\n<p>For Tether\u2019s criminal investigation by the Department of Justice, and the coincidental spike in the price of Bitcoin, <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2021\/07\/29\/tether-criminally-investigated-by-justice-department-when-the-music-stops-podcast\/\">see yesterday\u2019s post.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Coiners&#8217; continuing assertions that anyone should assume good faith in Bitfinex or Tether when they&#8217;re known bad actors in <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2021\/02\/23\/new-york-settles-with-tether-a-wrist-slap-with-a-strong-leash\/\">extensively documented, and indeed legally binding, detail<\/a> is Upton Sinclair&#8217;s law \u2014 \u201cIt is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends on his not understanding it\u201d \u2014 on PCP.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s me on a Turkish crypto blog talking about Tether and USDC. Google Translate gives a reasonable rendition of my original answers. [<a href=\"https:\/\/sosyal.paraanaliz.com\/2021\/07\/26\/david-gerard-ile-tether-ve-usd-coin-uzerine\/\"><i>PA Sosyal<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>Virgil Griffith is the Ethereum Foundation developer who <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2019\/12\/01\/virgil-griffith-arrested-over-north-korea-visit-engineer-arrogance-but-on-the-blockchain\/\">evangelised Ethereum to North Korea<\/a> and got himself arrested in 2019. Griffith was out on bail, but violated his bail conditions by trying to access his Coinbase account \u2014 he got his mother to log in, which totally doesn\u2019t count, right? \u201cThough the defendant is a bright well-educated man, his method of circumvention of the Order was neither clever nor effective,\u201d said the judge. Griffith is back behind bars until his hearing in September. I said I\u2019d listen for $50 \u2014 very cheap consulting indeed. After one guy tried paying me in Nano, and multiple people attempted to explain to him in small words why digital pogs do not in fact constitute dollars, another guy sent $50 in actual money via PayPal. As a man of my word, I live-tweeted the ordeal.<\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;ll be unsurprised to hear that this podcast did not, in fact, sell me on Nano. Nano is an ambitious but insignificant research coin, and not even a very fast one \u2014 at 70 transactions per second (for comparison, a private Ethereum instance can do 300 TPS), it\u2019s not quite taking over the world any time soon. And even without proof-of-work, Nano still wants to use Bitcoin&#8217;s broken and incompetent <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/the-conspiracist-gold-bug-economics-of-bitcoin\/\">conspiracy theory economics<\/a> \u2014 it&#8217;s all <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2018\/04\/07\/saifedean-ammous-the-bitcoin-standard-the-austrian-case-for-bitcoin\/\">Austrian economics, Bitcoin variant.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>If this podcast is the sort of marketing that convinces Nano\u2019s bloody awful Twitter pumpers, I can see why they&#8217;re like they are. The nicest thing I can say is they&#8217;re not as bad as the XRP or Iota pumpers from back in the day.<\/p>\n<p>The next time someone wants me to listen to their crypto podcast, it&#8217;ll be $100. That&#8217;s actual-money USD, not your altcoin. A third podcast will probably be $200. I&#8217;ll double the price from there until the requests stop. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/retail-consumer\/amazon-denies-report-accepting-bitcoin-payment-2021-07-26\/\"><i>Reuters<\/i><\/a><i>; <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.jobs\/en\/jobs\/1644513\/digital-currency-and-blockchain-product-lead\"><i>Amazon<\/i><\/a><i>, <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/tThZ3\"><i>archive<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>MicroStrategy has announced its Q2 2021 earnings.
