[<a href=\"https:\/\/app.uniswap.org\/#\/vote\/1\/1\"><i>Uniswap<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>The original plan was for DEF to spend the tokens over four or five years. But about half was liquidated for 10.2 million USDC, on Monday 12 July. Larry Sukernik, one of the multisigners on DEF who made this decision, dumped 2,612 UNI from his personal holdings just before the liquidation. [<a href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/concern-as-uniswap-backed-defi-education-fund-dumps-10m-worth-of-uni\"><i>CoinTelegraph<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>Aggrieved UNI holders are demanding answers. But hey, it&#8217;s not like they have enough votes. And this is clearly a 100% success in DEF\u2019s mission to serve as an educational example.<\/p>\n<p>Jack Dorsey of Twitter is launching some sort of DeFi platform based on Bitcoin \u2014 \u201can open developer platform with the sole goal of making it easy to create non-custodial, permissionless, and decentralized financial services. Our primary focus is #Bitcoin.\u201d [<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jack\/status\/1415765941904941061\"><i>Twitter thread<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>The ShapeShift crypto exchange is turning itself into a DeFi protocol, with none of that messy Know-Your-Customer. DeFi users on multiple chains will get airdrops of FOX tokens, the governance token on the new protocol. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/shapeshift-to-shut-down-airdrop-fox-tokens-to-decentralize-itself-out-of-existence\"><i>CoinDesk<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<h3>Everybody still hates Binance<\/h3>\n<p>A lot of Binance US users are complaining they can\u2019t get their money out. [<a href=\"https:\/\/amycastor.com\/2021\/07\/13\/binance-fiat-off-ramps-keep-closing-reports-of-frozen-funds-what-happened-to-catherine-coley\/\"><i>Amy Castor<\/i><\/a><i>; <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/32-angry-consumer-complaints-to-the-ftc-about-binance-1847200156\"><i>Gizmodo<\/i><\/a>] We also understand they can\u2019t get their <i>cryptos<\/i> out, which is making Binance smell uncomfortably like Mt. Gox and Quadriga.<\/p>\n<p>Hong Kong\u2019s Securities and Futures Commission has announced that Binance is not licensed to offer stock token trading in the territory \u2014 that thing Binance was doing where you could trade fractions of stocks in real companies on the exchange, that <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2021\/04\/30\/news-bitcoin-mining-is-not-green-miners-versus-programmers-gold-is-cleaner-than-bitcoin-exchanges-collapse-nft-forgery\/\">got them in trouble with BaFin<\/a> in Germany. Coincidentally, Binance has just announced an end to stock tokens. [<a href=\"https:\/\/apps.sfc.hk\/edistributionWeb\/gateway\/EN\/news-and-announcements\/news\/doc?refNo=21PR76\"><i>SFC<\/i><\/a><i>; <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.binance.com\/en\/support\/announcement\/3a0304f3ee1c43668959c1b01f610d59\"><i>Binance<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>Poland\u2019s Office of the Financial Supervision Authority (Urz\u0105d Komisji Nadzoru Finansowego, UKNF) has put up a notice drawing attention to the multiple foreign regulators already upset with Binance. Poland doesn\u2019t even have a regulator for crypto, but UKNF <i>still<\/i> felt it should recommend special caution when dealing with Binance. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.knf.gov.pl\/komunikacja\/komunikaty?articleId=74107&amp;p_id=18\"><i>KNF<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>Italy hates Binance too. \u201cConsob warns savers that the companies of the \u2018Binance Group\u2019 are not authorized to provide investment services and activities in Italy.\u201d [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.consob.it\/web\/consob\/dettaglio-news\/-\/asset_publisher\/hZ774IBO5XPe\/content\/avviso-a-tutela-dei-risparmiatori-sul-gruppo-binance-15-luglio-2021-\/10194\"><i>CONSOB<\/i><\/a><i>, in Italian and English<\/i>]<\/p>\n<p>The Bank of Lithuania has warned against Binance as well. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lb.lt\/en\/news\/bank-of-lithuania-issued-warning-regarding-binance-uab-and-other-crypto-asset-service-providers\"><em>Bank of Lithuania<\/em><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>Santander UK has cut off Binance, and \u201cNatWest said last week it had blocked payments to &#8216;a small number of cryptocurrency asset firms where we have seen particularly significant levels of fraud-related harm for our customers&#8217; without naming Binance.\u201d HSBC cut off all crypto exchanges earlier this year. So, with <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2021\/06\/16\/news-stopping-ransomware-china-hates-miners-ecuador-cbdc-history-nfts-still-too-hard-to-buy\/\">Barclays<\/a> having cut off Binance and <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2021\/07\/03\/news-binance-vs-the-world-vaneck-etf-robinhood-fined-africrypt-ponzi-mass-ransomware-attack\/\">TSB<\/a> having cut off all crypto exchanges, that&#8217;s all the biggest UK high street banks. [<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/a699c495-0c18-40af-8d2d-73571daa77a1\">FT<\/a>, paywalled<\/em>]<\/p>\n<p>Clear Junction has cut off Binance\u2019s last Faster Payments channel in the UK. Clear Junction is a small payments provider that specifically markets itself to crypto companies. Clear Junction cites the FCA warning \u2014 but I strongly suspect their banks also told them that Binance was a relationship-breaker. [<a href=\"https:\/\/clearjunction.com\/news\/binance-transactions\/\"><i>Clear Junction<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>Binance payments no longer work via SEPA (Single Euro Payments Area), the channel for getting EUR in and out. Various experimenters on crypto Twitter have worked out that the only way to get funds in and out of Binance from Europe or the UK is via Mastercard or Visa \u2014 and even then, perhaps only one way. Do you feel lucky? [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/bf99e9e3-d104-4a92-81a1-8bd70b884b3f\"><i>FT<\/i><\/a><i>, paywalled<\/i>]<\/p>\n<p>Fraudulent Chinese loan apps are using Indians\u2019 KYC details to open bank accounts and crypto exchange accounts. WazirX \u2014 the Indian version of Binance \u2014 is involved. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenewsminute.com\/article\/chinese-loan-apps-misuse-kyc-details-indians-set-fake-bank-accounts-151036\"><i>The News Minute<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt this point, Binance is holding so much Tether the exchange is far more dependent on USDT\u2019s peg staying stable than it is on any of its banking relationships.\u201d [<a href=\"https:\/\/startupsandecon.substack.com\/p\/bitcoins-end-tether-binance-and-the\/\"><i>Startups And Econ<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>Whatever happened to Catherine Coley, the previous CEO of Binance US, who disappeared without trace in April? Coley is alive and well, and there may be litigation in progress. The app dropped my sound at one point and I had to reconnect. (The Twitter app is awful, so much worse than the web version.) But it basically worked. It&#8217;s 90 minutes. I played it back on YouTube at 1.25\u00d7 and it was quite listenable. Twitter Spaces is fun and works. The<a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2019\/06\/21\/news-quadriga-was-even-worse-than-we-thought-fatf-crypto-guidance-finalised-facebook-libra-roundup\/\"> regulations proposed in 2019<\/a> are going into place \u2014 but full implementation of the travel rule is blocked on technology. [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fatf-gafi.org\/publications\/fatfrecommendations\/documents\/second-12-month-review-virtual-assets-vasps.html\"><i>press release<\/i><\/a><i>; <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fatf-gafi.org\/media\/fatf\/documents\/recommendations\/Second-12-Month-Review-Revised-FATF-Standards-Virtual-Assets-VASPS.pdf\"><i>report<\/i><\/a><i>, PDF<\/i>]<\/p>\n<p>The FATF will continue to push for full implementation, including the travel rule, by November 2021, when it publishes the final version of the guidance.<\/p>\n<p>The US is delivering regulatory clarity, good and hard. \u201cSEC\u2019s Gary Gensler has told lawmakers that investor protection rules should apply to crypto exchanges.\u201d [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/bitcoin-draws-more-scrutiny-from-regulators-worried-about-fraud-11625576400\"><i>WSJ<\/i><\/a><i>, paywalled<\/i>]<\/p>\n<p>Treasury secretary Janet Yellen is putting together a group of regulators to work out rules for stablecoins. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-07-16\/yellen-to-convene-u-s-regulators-to-discuss-stablecoin-rules\"><i>Bloomberg<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>A Stablecoin Applies to Become a Stonk: Doomberg thinks Gensler is unlikely to let Circle pull off its terrible attempt to go public via a SPAC, without doing the full S-1 usually required of a public offering. The SEC has been coming down on SPACs for inadequate disclosure, <i>i.e.<\/i>, lying. I haven&#8217;t even responded or applied to any, because it&#8217;s resume poison.&#8221; \u2014 Khorne<\/p>\n<p>\u201ci&#8217;ve been approached by a crypto company\/would-be company looking for someone who knows something about quantum computing or quantum cryptography. if your first question is lol why does a cryptocurrency company need a quantum computing guy that was also my first question and if you still don&#8217;t have a satisfactory answer neither do i\u201d \u2014 SubG<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So far the companies can&#8217;t find enough people who are both stupid and craven enough.<\/p>\n<p>The companies also keep demanding people who will go into an office. In <i>this<\/i> employment market. I could be cynical and say it\u2019s so they could discuss shenanigans in a way that couldn\u2019t be recorded &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>One guy was previously my favourite bank compliance officer. Absolutely the natural predator of the bitcoiner \u2014 he loved nothing more than unbanking the banked. Because crypto was <i>always<\/i> a massive red flag for other shenanigans. He got an approach from [POPULAR DEFI PROTOCOL], which he turned down after laughing his head off.<\/p>\n<h3>Good news for Bitcoin<\/h3>\n<p>Cambridge data shows Bitcoin mining on the move \u2014 latest CBECI mining map updates, with quotes from me. All we need now is for bitcoin.org to get ransomwared for Monero. [<a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/75276\/bitcoin-org-reportedly-hit-ddos-attack-ransom-demand\"><i>Decrypt<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>Bitcoins as objects of religious veneration: &#8220;About to live in my car, what to do with Hardware Wallet &amp; Keys? I know the obvious answer is to sell my crypto assets and get a proper place to live, but I don&#8217;t want to do that yet at this time.&#8221; From his comment history, the guy is also a 9\/11 truther, an anti-vaxxer and an outright COVID denier. So if he&#8217;s just doing a bit, he\u2019s sure dedicated. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Bitcoin\/comments\/okjt2k\/about_to_live_in_my_car_what_to_do_with_hardware\/\"><i>Reddit<\/i><\/a>]<\/p>\n<h3>Things happen<\/h3>\n<p>Reggie Fowler, the man at the centre of Tether\u2019s missing funds, is ready for trial. He has new lawyers, and the judge has made it clear that these lawyers can\u2019t quit if Fowler doesn\u2019t pay them like he didn\u2019t pay the last lot. Fowler\u2019s previous plea deal fell apart because nobody knew precisely how much money was in his various frozen accounts, and Fowler didn\u2019t want to be on the hook for any difference from the stated settlement amount. The prosecutor doesn&#8217;t seem likely to give him another attempt at a plea deal. Anyway, the SEC finally charged three of them with insider trading. No settlement, this one\u2019s going to court. The guy from Chia claims &#8220;recyclable hard drives are entering the marketplace&#8221;, which is a <i>remarkable<\/i> claim.
