The Bitcoin trading economy is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/if-bitcoin-looks-like-it-isnt-trading-its-because-it-isnt-11575637204\">all but dead<\/a> \u2014 &#8220;The market has been seeking bitcoin\u2019s next big catalyst for two years &#8230; the sobering reality that creating new global monetary standards requires more than computer code.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But don&#8217;t worry \u2014 institutional investors will <i>definitely<\/i> parachute in and save the price! <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-12-04\/wait-for-institutional-investors-grows-as-crypto-funds-close\">&#8230;\u00a0oh.<\/a> Crypto &#8220;hedge funds&#8221; are closing down \u2014 because &#8220;crypto hedge fund&#8221; means some bozo with pretensions and a large holding, who made money while the bubble was going up \u2014 while institutions sit this one out, thanks.<\/p>\n<p>(I don&#8217;t expect the &#8220;institutional over-the counter traders&#8221; narrative to stop for a moment.)<\/p>\n<p>Mike McGlone from Bloomberg Intelligence brings us <a href=\"https:\/\/www.docdroid.net\/TgbftYy\/bloomberg-crypto-outlook-dec-2019.pdf\">more narratives<\/a> \u2014 if Bitcoin drops to $6500, that&#8217;s actually <i>good<\/i> news for 2020. Makes it more like gold, y&#8217;see. Also, Tether&#8217;s legal troubles are really <i>good<\/i> news for Bitcoin too. <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2019\/05\/27\/the-origin-of-number-go-up-in-bitcoin-culture\/\">up uP UP!!<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/lawmaster\/status\/1202846015897952256\">Larry Cermak:<\/a> &#8220;Everyone is freaking out that billions of dollars in BTC is being moved but in reality, it&#8217;s the same address constantly moving the same stash.&#8221; Likely explanations include this being an attempt to fake daily trading volume \u2014 there is <i>no<\/i> metric in crypto that someone won&#8217;t try to rig for the sake of narrative.<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, the <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2018\/12\/17\/the-bart-sudden-hundreds-of-bitcoin-pumps-or-dumps-to-burn-the-margin-traders\/\">barts<\/a> continue.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I&#39;m sure institutional investors love the phrase &quot;4yr HODL period&quot;. Brb pitching to Goldman with my rage comic themed &quot;Le BITDA&quot; graph<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Toby Pinder (@tobypinder) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tobypinder\/status\/1203654756796960768?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 8, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Dash senior advisor &#8220;MooCowMoo&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/bitcoinist.com\/making-a-dash-for-it-moocowmoo-disappears\/\">does a dash with the Dash<\/a> \u2014 MooCowMoo ran a Masternode Shares service, <a href=\"https:\/\/masternode.me\/\">masternode.me,<\/a> and had advised users on 10 August that he was shutting down &#8230; but didn&#8217;t quite get around to the bit where he gave people&#8217;s Dash coins back.<\/p>\n<p>Fernando Gutierrez from Dash was quick to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/fernando\/status\/1201612650406395905\">state<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20191202212652\/https:\/twitter.com\/fernando\/status\/1201612650406395905\">archive<\/a>) that &#8220;Moocowmoo was never hired by DCG and left the project years ago&#8221; \u2014 and never mind the current dash.org pages calling MooCowMoo a <a href=\"http:\/\/archive.is\/UE8lA#selection-5727.225-5727.256\">Dash Core Team member<\/a> and linking his GitHub, or <a href=\"http:\/\/archive.is\/WrJiC#selection-6884.0-6884.1\">recommending<\/a> masternode.me.<\/p>\n<p>I must say, I was sorely disappointed to hear such disconcerting news about esteemed senior financial adviser &#8230; <i>(checks notes)<\/i> &#8230; ah, &#8220;Moo Cow Moo.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, after the story appeared on Bitcoinist on 2 December, someone reported on Reddit that MooCowMoo finally <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/dashpay\/comments\/e66sjz\/moocowupdate_developing_story_more_and_more\/\">started returning the Dash.<\/a> The poster blames a Dash &#8220;hater&#8221; for daring to tell people about the problem at all.<\/p>\n<p>Investors will get an extra hour in the <a href=\"https:\/\/jezebel.com\/the-tumblr-user-convention-dashcon-was-a-beautiful-hil-1604571770\">Dashcoin ball pit.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Masternode.me is, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/7DQ15\">today,<\/a> still telling people to sign up, and send in their Dash.<\/p>\n<p>Apparently, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DashUncensored\/status\/1201580247642230784\">my blog is news central for dumb crypto scams<\/a> now:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2019\/12\/08\/news-bitcoin-trading-near-dead-moocowmoo-does-a-dash-lightning-network-cbdcs-are-a-bluff-keybase-alienates-users\/dash-moocowmoo\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-15189\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-15189\" src=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/dash-moocowmoo.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"317\" srcset=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/dash-moocowmoo.jpg 1072w, https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/dash-moocowmoo-300x190.jpg 300w, https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/dash-moocowmoo-1024x650.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/dash-moocowmoo-768x487.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Bitfinex goes <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/paoloardoino\/status\/1201761312075927553\">Lightning Network!<\/a> This is, yet again,\u00a0 Bitcoin reinventing the financial system from first principles, badly \u2014 in this case, moving from real-time gross settlement and push payments, to <a href=\"https:\/\/ftalphaville.ft.com\/2019\/12\/04\/1575457459000\/By-Jove--Crypto-has-discovered-netting\/\">deferred net settlements and pull payments.<\/a> Just like real banking! Except worse \u2014 the Lightning system is massively dependent on credit, drains liquidity, deters consumers by its dependence on pre-funding, suffers from having no compulsory clearing cycle, and doesn&#8217;t pay those taking risks to provide liquidity well enough at all. Bitcoiners who are LARPing at doing finance could do with reading this article.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a new research paper, <a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/pdf\/1911.09432.pdf\">A Cryptoeconomic Traffic Analysis of Bitcoin\u2019s Lightning Network<\/a> \u2014 Lightning is &#8220;economically irrational&#8221;, &#8220;payment fees will rise significantly&#8221;, and &#8220;payments are easily de-anonymizable&#8221; &#8220;even if transactions are onion routed.&#8221; None of which should be news to anyone who isn&#8217;t trying to use Lightning as part of a Bitcoin &#8220;number go up&#8221; narrative.<\/p>\n<p>There is now a Lightning Network ATM! Most of these comments seem designed to jolt the private sector banks into improving the inefficient, costly and time-consuming world of cross-border payments.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The European Central Bank states this pretty directly in last week&#8217;s note <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecb.europa.eu\/pub\/pdf\/other\/ecb.other191204~f6a84c14a7.en.pdf\">Innovation and its impact on the European retail payment landscape<\/a> \u2014 they want better consumer payments, they have no plans to allow Libra-like private stablecoins, and they&#8217;re waving around the threat of a CBDC euro if the commercial banks don&#8217;t do better at payments.<\/p>\n<p>The US <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-12-05\/mnuchin-powell-see-no-need-for-fed-to-issue-digital-currency\">sees no need<\/a> for a CBDC dollar at present \u2014 and Treasury secretary Steve Mnuchin is fine with Facebook doing Libra as long as it&#8217;s fully compliant with anti-money-laundering rules, and has had a dozen meetings with Facebook about this.<\/p>\n<p>I didn&#8217;t see this one at the time \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20190620060846\/https:\/\/onezero.medium.com\/thoughts-on-libra-blockchain-49b8f6c26372\">Jameson Lopp&#8217;s analysis<\/a> of the Libra technical white paper, from June. He describes what Libra&#8217;s vague plans meant in Bitcoin terms, and what they implied for Libra&#8217;s intended governance.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/twitter.com\/karbonbased\/status\/1140987155176706049<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Leibowitz class action against Bitfinex and Tether for manipulating the price of Bitcoin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.courtlistener.com\/docket\/16298999\/leibowitz-v-ifinex-inc\/\">proceeds.<\/a> Roche Freedman have succeeded in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.courtlistener.com\/docket\/16298999\/40\/leibowitz-v-ifinex-inc\/\">serving<\/a> notice of the action upon Phil Potter, have a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.courtlistener.com\/recap\/gov.uscourts.nysd.524076\/gov.uscourts.nysd.524076.44.0.pdf\">default<\/a> against Reggie Fowler, and the lawyers for Ludovicus Jan van der Velde and Giancarlo Devasini have refused to accept service on their behalf \u2014 claiming they don&#8217;t know where to find their own clients. Tether, Global Trade Solutions and Crypto Capital Corp are also proving difficult to serve.<\/p>\n<p>The SEC, in its case against Telegram, has asked the US court to request deposition of UK resident and citizen John Hyman \u2014 the SEC asked Hyman nicely, but he refused. This international request is under the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hcch.net\/en\/instruments\/conventions\/full-text\/?cid=82\">Hague Evidence Convention<\/a> \u2014 in the same manner as in <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2019\/07\/24\/kleiman-v-wright-international-deposition-and-discovery-requested-from-andrew-ohagan-ramona-watts-and-robert-macgregor\/\">Kleiman v. Wright.<\/a> Only the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.courtlistener.com\/recap\/gov.uscourts.nysd.524448\/gov.uscourts.nysd.524448.43.0.pdf\">request letter<\/a> is visible on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.courtlistener.com\/docket\/16325310\/securities-and-exchange-commission-v-telegram-group-inc\/\">public docket<\/a> \u2014 but Anna Baydakova from CoinDesk has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/sec-reveals-telegrams-communications-with-investors-seeks-to-question-advisor\">analysed the letter and documents<\/a> for us.<\/p>\n<p>Did you hear how Softbank \u2014 the giant Japanese tech investor, most famous for massively overfunding WeWork and Uber \u2014 is getting into crypto? A press release on the <a href=\"https:\/\/markets.businessinsider.com\/news\/stocks\/sbc-wallet-cards-now-issued-by-softbank-1028728349\">SBC Wallet Card<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/archive.is\/8SwMB\">archive<\/a>) was reprinted by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=%22sbc+wallet+card%22&amp;client=ubuntu&amp;hs=EFM&amp;channel=fs&amp;biw=1536&amp;bih=741&amp;sxsrf=ACYBGNSkXlmCaYjv3-7ngwmFB-Lxj55yPg%3A1575818281652&amp;source=lnt&amp;tbs=cdr%3A1%2Ccd_min%3A1+dec+2019%2Ccd_max%3A8+dec+2019&amp;tbm=\">large swathes<\/a> of the crypto press. The only problem is \u2014 the press release was fake. Anthony Peyton was <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TonyFintech\/status\/1201844695745187840\">literally the only person to bother checking with Softbank,<\/a> who confirmed it was nothing to do with them.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Keybase\">Keybase<\/a> is a company running a key directory \u2014 it maps cryptographic keys to social media identities. It was very popular with security, cryptography and open-source software professionals. Then they took money from Andreessen Horowitz \u2014 thus mandating growth at all costs. Then they <a href=\"https:\/\/keybase.io\/blog\/keybase-stellar\">took money from Stellar.<\/a> Then they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/stellar-to-airdrop-2-billion-xlm-into-keybase-wallets\">airdropped Stellar<\/a> on their user base \u2014 and now the <a href=\"https:\/\/vicki.substack.com\/p\/keybase-and-the-chaos-of-crypto\">crypto spammers are making Keybase unusable.<\/a> And Keybase <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whiskey-tango.org\/2019\/11\/keybase-weve-got-privacy-problem.html\">considers the spam a feature.<\/a> And the old users are <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/aredridel\/status\/1201338814859501569\">leaving Keybase to the crypto spammers.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">It\u2019s simple, you put the triple C-rated smart contracts inside B-rated smart contracts and then package those smart contracts with other B-rated smart contracts inside a A-rated smart contract.<\/p>\n<p>Then you convince people to trust your smart contract with their ETH. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ejTDvHKJ9f\">pic.twitter.com\/ejTDvHKJ9f<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Libra (@LibraReserve) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LibraReserve\/status\/1144759948368326660?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 29, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The New Economy, New City panel for Intelligence Squared on Thursday went well, and was lots of fun! I argued what I always argue \u2014 that &#8220;blockchain&#8221; for enterprise is snake oil and nonsense, and at best superfluous. But maybe you can use it for marketing. No video or audio, sadly, but there were some photos (below).<\/p>\n<p>One proponent tried putting forward the UK government welfare trial \u2014 mentioned in <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/table-of-contents\/\">chapter 11<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/book\/\"><i>Attack of the 50 Foot Blockchain<\/i><\/a> \u2014 as a blockchain success story. This was the one that <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2018\/06\/15\/news-rip-off-britain-on-bitcoin-tether-in-depth-ethereum-as-non-security-blockchain-not-up-to-uk-welfare-apple-kicks-crypto-apps-religion-but-on-the-blockchain\/\">failed so hard,<\/a> that even the government that thought Universal Credit was a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/news\/uk-news\/universal-credit-staff-suicides-poverty-17383399\">functional idea<\/a> thought the blockchain attempt was no good.
