I am continuing to speak in terms of Gerald Cotten&#8217;s <i>alleged<\/i> death.<\/p>\n<p>The Block ran a story on how <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theblockcrypto.com\/post\/47922\/binances-shanghai-office-shut-down-following-police-raid-sources-say\">Binance&#8217;s Shanghai office was raided by police.<\/a> Binance denounced the entire report as lies and calumny \u2014 saying they weren&#8217;t raided and that they &#8230; didn&#8217;t have an office? &#8220;Binance hasn&#8217;t had an office in Shanghai for more than two years,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/cz_binance\/status\/1197679134635225089\">tweeted<\/a> CZ from Binance \u2014 and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/cz_binance\/status\/1198092831560126464\">threatened to sue The Block,<\/a> with the explicit aim of <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/cz_binance\/status\/1197737837921091584\">outspending them<\/a> into silence.<\/p>\n<p>The Block <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theblockcrypto.com\/post\/48112\/setting-the-record-straight-on-our-binance-reporting\">followed up<\/a> \u2014 Binance may have defined it as &#8220;not an office,&#8221; but they <i>did<\/i> have a pile of office space they rented, which employees went to on a daily basis to work in, which had libraries of company-owned books, and which CZ held company town-hall meetings in \u2014 and posted photos of the offices in question. The Block did change the word &#8220;raid&#8221; in the headline to &#8220;visit,&#8221; though.<\/p>\n<p>It was obvious to everyone this would go nowhere. Apart from Binance not having any plausible case that would fly in the US, the one thing a cryptocurrency exchange will never want to happen is legal proceedings that might lead to discovery of documents \u2014 especially an exchange that <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CasPiancey\/status\/1198301359927218177\">hops jurisdictions<\/a> the way Binance does.<\/p>\n<p>David Z. Morris <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2019\/11\/27\/crypto-needs-journalists-more-than-it-wants-to-admit\/\">writes up<\/a> the saga, and laments crypto&#8217;s ridiculous hostility to fact-based journalism. Its stated causes are much like <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2019\/10\/16\/news\/\">the first,<\/a> from October.<\/p>\n<p>The CFTC and Department of Justice criminal investigation of crypto markets, particularly Bitfinex and Tether, hasn&#8217;t been very noisy, but stuff&#8217;s still happening \u2014 like this <a href=\"https:\/\/govtribe.com\/award\/federal-contract-award\/definitive-contract-15jcrm19c00000034\">federal contract<\/a> to analyse evidence \u2014 &#8220;LITCONSUL-TETHER INVESTIGATION. Definitive Contract 15JCRM19C00000034 is a Time and Materials Federal Contract Award. I&#8217;d love to see the plus-or-minus on that claim of &#8220;7%&#8221; returns.
