In particular, the fever dream of &#8220;co-ordicide&#8221; \u2014 all the stuff in the white paper about how the tangle will solve the Blockchain trilemma has been irrelevant for the past two years, because IOTA actually runs on a completely centralised &#8220;coordinator,&#8221; but they&#8217;re totally going to kill it any month now. This is a good technical analysis that you should read.<\/p>\n<p>Tangleblog <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/q06Wq\">responded<\/a> by adding misogyny to the deranged cultism \u2014 a bit of an <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SarahJamieLewis\/status\/1161643888752250881\">IOTA tradition<\/a> \u2014 though he did say &#8220;I have to admit, I\u2019m neither a developer nor a consensus specialist&#8221; despite Lewis being both. ClearBank were apparently behind Coinbase barring UK customers from trading ZCash. Coinbase still do Euro payments through LHV Bank in Latvia, though LHV isn&#8217;t yet able to offer FPS to Coinbase.<\/p>\n<p>Coinbase is being sued over its initial listing of Bitcoin Cash \u2014 and the judge has ruled that third-party traders can sue an exchange if they think it damaged the market badly enough, so <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theblockcrypto.com\/2019\/08\/09\/fed-court-says-coinbase-can-be-held-negligent-for-allowing-dysfunctional-market-and-why-this-matters\/\">the case can go forward.<\/a> &#8220;Coinbase indeed had a duty to maintain a functional marketplace.&#8221; And the Terms of Service don&#8217;t get Coinbase out of this one. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/dcsilver\/status\/1159130076052692997\">David Silver:<\/a> &#8220;It turns out that crypto actually has rules, and tort liability attaches to claims against crypto exchanges. Whoa Nellie! That&#8217;s a really big deal.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Coinbase, desperate to drum up transaction volume, is offering conversion of an <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.coinbase.com\/coinbase-continues-to-explore-support-for-new-digital-assets-4d2ecbcbd38c\">ever-wider range<\/a> of <em>*cough* minor altcoins<\/em> to actual money \u2014 Algorand (which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theblockcrypto.com\/2019\/08\/08\/algorands-token-price-tanked-61-8-as-turing-award-union-square-ventures-backing-fail-to-justify-valuation\/\">recently crashed<\/a>), Cosmos, Dash, Decred, Ontology, Waves, Matic Network and Harmony. All are already on Binance, for what it&#8217;s worth. There&#8217;s no date as yet for a Coinbase listing.<\/p>\n<p>UK-based decentralised crypto exchange <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theblockcrypto.com\/2019\/08\/13\/bitfinex-spinoff-parts-way-with-troubled-exchange-as-management-eyes-regulated-rebrand\/\">Ethfinex has parted ways<\/a> with parent company iFinex (Bitfinex\/Tether) and rebranded as DeversiFi,  in a &#8220;management buyout&#8221; \u2014 though Bitfinex CTO Paolo Ardoino is still on board as a &#8220;technical advisor.&#8221; DeversiFi CEO Will Harborne is the guy who told Ben Munster from Decrypt precisely <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2019\/06\/30\/news-bitcoins-13000-not-even-a-bubble-how-tether-say-tether-works-craig-wright-shows-up-in-florida-facebook-libra\/\">how whales pump the Bitcoin price<\/a> with tethers.<\/p>\n<p>Tether is a whale&#8217;s game \u2014 of the 4 billion tethers in circulation, over 3 billion are held by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-08-07\/tether-mafia-318-crypto-addresses-control-most-of-stablecoin\">318 holders<\/a> with 1 million or more tethers each.<\/p>\n<p>Great podcast you should listen to \u2014 Cas Piancey <a href=\"https:\/\/www.podbean.com\/ew\/pb-csb5p-ba9700\">talks to KeywordCrypto<\/a> about Tether.<\/p>\n<p>Why was &#8220;dollar-pegged stablecoin&#8221; BitUSD <a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/8372\/why-is-dollar-pegged-stablecoin-bitusd-trading-at-34\">trading at $34<\/a> on Tuesday? Because CoinMarketCap, in the absence of good data, will try to kludge together an approximation from whatever scraps of information it can find \u2014 in this case, a wash-trading bot twiddling a dead altcoin on a bottom-of-the-barrel exchange.<\/p>\n<p>BitMEX ran a two-page advertisement in The Times on 9 January 2019, the tenth anniversary of Bitcoin 0.1 being released. Using a logarithmic Y-axis on a graph of the price of Bitcoin got it written up as a <a href=\"https:\/\/ftalphaville.ft.com\/2019\/01\/03\/1546533333000\/Happy-birthday-bitcoin--Your-gift--a-log-chart-in-the-The-Times\/\">chart crime<\/a> in FT Alphaville. And now the Advertising Standards Authority has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asa.org.uk\/rulings\/hdr-global-trading-ltd.html\">ruled the ad deceptive,<\/a> particularly the log scale \u2014 &#8220;in the absence of clear explanatory information, the graph was unlikely to be familiar or readily understandable to the national newspaper audience to whom the ad was directed.&#8221; The advertisement &#8220;must not appear again in its current form.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>David Smilie and the ezBtc crypto exchange in Vancouver are <a href=\"https:\/\/thetyee.ca\/News\/2019\/07\/26\/Vancouver-Bitcoin-Firm-Accused-Owing-Millions\/\">having some issues<\/a> sending out customer withdrawals, and other money they owe people. They currently seem to be about CDN$60 million down. This one is substantially &#8220;my lawyers were incompetent&#8221; \u2014 the approach that <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/tech-policy\/2015\/02\/op-ed-ross-ulbricht-got-a-fair-trial-but-not-a-fair-investigation\/\">Nicholas Weaver recommended<\/a> long ago. Unfortunately, the appeal was immediately <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2019\/08\/12\/silk-road-mastermind-ross-ulbricht-attempts-to-vacate-life-sentence\/\">thrown out as moot<\/a> \u2014 as the lawyers in question had not yet formally withdrawn from Ulbricht&#8217;s case.<\/p>\n<p>Nicholas Weaver is also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/nweaver\/snake-oil-security\">running a Kickstarter<\/a> to rent a booth for Snake Oil Security at RSA 2020.<\/p>\n<p>The SEC has frozen $8 million in assets held by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sec.gov\/news\/press-release\/2019-150\">Reggie Middleton of the Veritaseum ICO<\/a> \u2014 they accuse him of misleading investors, falsely claiming to have a product ready to generate revenue, manipulating the VERI token price, and misappropriating investor funds.<\/p>\n<p>Kik has filed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scribd.com\/document\/420996750\/2019-08-06-Answer-dckt-22-0\">130 page response<\/a> to the <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2019\/06\/04\/the-sec-finally-loses-patience-and-sues-kik-over-the-kin-ico\/\">SEC&#8217;s July complaint<\/a> about the Kin ICO \u2014 Kik <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theblockcrypto.com\/2019\/08\/06\/sec-v-kik-kik-files-aggressive-answer-to-sec-lawsuit\/\">deny everything,<\/a> and say the SEC created a &#8220;highly selective and misleading depiction of the record&#8221;. Jason Gottlieb <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ohaiom\/status\/1159115737707024386\">thinks<\/a> that Kik&#8217;s territoriality arguments might have something to them.<\/p>\n<p>There are some new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.courtlistener.com\/docket\/6309656\/kleiman-v-wright\/?page=2\">documents<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2019\/06\/15\/craig-wright-has-to-show-up-in-florida-on-28-june-or-else\/\">Kleiman v. Wright.<\/a> The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.courtlistener.com\/recap\/gov.uscourts.flsd.521536\/gov.uscourts.flsd.521536.261.1.pdf\">deposition of Jonathan Warren,<\/a> creator of Bitmessage, confirms that the supposed messages between Craig Wright and Dave Kleiman are forgeries &mdash; they&#8217;re dated before Bitmessage&#8217;s first public release, and use features that weren&#8217;t in the software until later releases. The big one is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.courtlistener.com\/recap\/gov.uscourts.flsd.521536\/gov.uscourts.flsd.521536.265.0_1.pdf\">denial of Wright&#8217;s motion to dismiss<\/a> on the basis that the Federal court did not have jurisdiction. them into uselessness, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.buttcoinfoundation.org\/the-story-of-when-buttcoin-org-sold-out-and-how-butterfly-labs-turned-it-and-other-sites-into-a-marketing-machine\/\">bought buttcoin.org<\/a> to suppress a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.buttcoinfoundation.org\/butterfly-labs-mini-rig-is-a-huge-broken-unstable-piece-of-shit\/\">bad review,<\/a> and turned out to be run by <a href=\"http:\/\/ia800304.us.archive.org\/12\/items\/gov.uscourts.cacd.383557\/gov.uscourts.cacd.383557.191.0.pdf\">convicted mail fraudsters?<\/a> A pile of the same people tried coming back with an ICO a few months, called AMMBR. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Buttcoin\/comments\/auxttx\/butterfly_labs_butt_boy_band_back_the_story\/\">It didn&#8217;t go so well.<\/a> For the buyers, anyway.<\/p>\n<p>In the first quarter of 2019, mining hardware giant Bitmain made <a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/8214\/bitmain-made-losses-310-million\">losses of $310 million<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/new.qq.com\/omn\/20190802\/20190802A03KIS00.html\">original<\/a>) on total operating income of <span class=\"notranslate\">$1.082 billion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Brenna Smith at Bellingcat traces the evolution of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bellingcat.com\/news\/2019\/08\/09\/the-evolution-of-bitcoin-in-terrorist-financing\/\">Bitcoin in terrorist financing.<\/a> It&#8217;s still not very good for the job \u2014 doing things governments don&#8217;t like on a permanent immutable public ledger remains not so smart \u2014 and cash is still king, but, surprisingly, terrorists have greater than zero use for Bitcoin.<\/p>\n<p>Trail of Bits <a href=\"https:\/\/securityboulevard.com\/2019\/08\/246-findings-from-our-smart-contract-audits-an-executive-summary\/\">security-audited 246 smart contracts,<\/a> and has summarised their findings \u2014 &#8220;the aggregate data from every full smart contract security review we\u2019ve ever done&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>When was the busiest time for companies to claim they were pivoting to blockchain? <a href=\"http:\/\/clsbluesky.law.columbia.edu\/2019\/08\/07\/riding-the-blockchain-mania-public-firms-speculative-8-k-disclosures\/\">The first quarter of 2018<\/a> \u2014 just <em>after<\/em> the peak of the 2017 crypto bubble. Or, at least, using the the words &#8220;blockchain,&#8221; &#8220;bitcoin&#8221; or &#8220;cryptocurrency(ies)&#8221; in their 8-K filings with the SEC. &#8220;We also caution investors that, despite corporate managers\u2019 increasing use of the word blockchain in the 8-Ks, few firms have developed successful blockchain projects.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Trying to pay with Bitcoin at a Mexico City &#8220;Bitcoin bar&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/tech-policy\/2019\/08\/i-tried-to-pay-with-bitcoin-at-a-mexico-city-bar-it-didnt-go-well\/\">didn\u2019t go well<\/a> \u2014 &#8220;Transactions under [1,000 pesos] are taking a day to two, in the course of today they will reach the wallet.&#8221; The owner of the bar has taken care to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BlueDavid\/status\/1159137350955544576\">blame the customer,<\/a> as is standard whenever Bitcoin is found yet again to be useless garbage as a currency.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/timihealth.com\/\">TimiHealth<\/a>, the Tokenized Health Data Ecosystem\u2122, lets you &#8220;Own &amp; Control Your Data&#8221; \u2014 with a patient data leak, but <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/zackwhittaker\/status\/1158750566765477894\">on the blockchain.<\/a> But it&#8217;s okay! They don&#8217;t collect and store any of your personal information, except your DNA. TimiHealth <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20190807090157\/https:\/\/twitter.com\/TimiHealth\/status\/1158760610957615104\">claim<\/a> that the data, which was available on an open web server \u2014 and not in fact on a &#8220;blockchain&#8221; \u2014 was a &#8220;test environment&#8221; with no actual data \u2014 except it included a <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20190815174935\/https:\/twitter.com\/zackwhittaker\/status\/1158761447268261888\">lab report.<\/a> TimiHealth&#8217;s story then changed to the data being from &#8220;a personal friend of the Timi team,&#8221; then that their patient data leak was &#8220;orchestrated&#8221; by &#8220;big tech companies.&#8221; And that their open web server was due to a &#8220;hack,&#8221; and not, <em>e.g.<\/em>, incompetence.
