The exchange was a Ponzi scheme operating as a money laundering chop shop, dealing with a few outside customers here and there for appearance&#8217;s sake. It appears <i>never<\/i> to have been run as a sustainable business. Gerald Cotten created fake money on the exchange, bought real bitcoins with it, sold those coins on other exchanges, and blew it all margin-trading on altcoins \u2014 except what he spent on living a life of luxury.<\/p>\n<p>Amy Castor has <a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/7533\/quadrigacx-ceo-traded-millions-in-fake-funds-to-fund-luxury-lifestyle-alleges-trustee?utm_content=buffera608c&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter.com&amp;utm_campaign=buffer\">the summary,<\/a> but you should read the full report as well \u2014 go to the <a href=\"https:\/\/documentcentre.eycan.com\/Pages\/Main.aspx?SID=1445\">EY Quadriga page,<\/a> and look under Documents \u2192 English \u2192 Bankruptcy \u2192 4. Reports of the Trustee \u2192 2. First Report of the Trustee. I think we can definitely speak in terms of Cotten&#8217;s <em>alleged<\/em> death.<\/p>\n<p>Disasters like Quadriga are why regulators are moving in on the space hard. The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) has finalised its <a href=\"https:\/\/static.coindesk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Embargo-Virtual-Asset-Guidance.pdf\">guidance on virtual asset exchanges,<\/a> and it&#8217;s precisely what was expected \u2014 Coindesk <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/fatf-crypto-travel-rule\">summarises<\/a> the report. I got quoted by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/technology-48667525\">BBC<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.vice.com\/en_us\/article\/evykyn\/facebook-just-launched-its-own-version-of-bitcoin-heres-what-you-need-to-know\">Vice News<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/uk.finance.yahoo.com\/news\/facebook-cryptocurrency-libra-calibra-blockchain-bitcoin-095550584.html\">Yahoo Finance<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.co.uk\/article\/facebook-libra-currency-replacing-cash\">Wired UK<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/7554\/dont-call-libra-a-stablecoin\">Decrypt,<\/a> and I went on <a href=\"https:\/\/omny.fm\/shows\/kelly-cutrara\/facebook-jumps-into-the-crypto-currency-market\">Kelly Cutrara&#8217;s show<\/a> on Global News Toronto 640. I was also one of the many working on the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Libra_(cryptocurrency)\">Wikipedia article,<\/a> and dealing with the issues of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Talk:Libra_(cryptocurrency)\">how to write about<\/a> something that doesn&#8217;t exist yet.<\/p>\n<p>The support from some of Facebook&#8217;s partners is &#8230; desultory. The press releases from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paypal.com\/stories\/us\/why-paypal-plans-to-be-part-of-the-libra-association\">PayPal<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/usa.visa.com\/visa-everywhere\/blog\/bdp\/2019\/06\/13\/visa-announces-intent-1560469988368.html\">Visa<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kiva.org\/blog\/kiva-becomes-a-founding-partner-of-libra-association-to-support-financial-inclusion-for-all\">Kiva<\/a> in particular are remarkable in how hard they dodge committing to any actual courses of action whatsoever.<\/p>\n<p>Libra has released its blockchain software! Or a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/opinion\/articles\/2019-06-20\/facebook-s-libra-cryptocurrency-isn-t-actually-supposed-to-work\">barely functional pre-alpha that does hardly anything.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Nicholas Weaver details just a few of the ways in which the plans for Libra foreshadow a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawfareblog.com\/facebooks-cryptocurrency-stop-it-it-starts\">regulatory car crash.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>All the crypto people who begged for &#8220;regulatory clarity?&#8221; Libra means you&#8217;re going to get it, good and hard. France creates a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-facebook-crypto-france-idUSKCN1TM0SO\">G7 task force<\/a> to help central banks deal with &#8220;stablecoins&#8221; that are big enough to be a systemic risk.<\/p>\n<p>Facebook <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/izakaminska\/status\/1141354108760272902\">doesn&#8217;t like FT Alphaville&#8217;s coverage<\/a> of Libra. So you should probably read <a href=\"https:\/\/ftalphaville.ft.com\/\">FT Alphaville<\/a> more. It&#8217;s free with a login, and totally worth your time. In fact, read all of Financial Times&#8217; Libra coverage <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/0c5c4012-9100-11e9-b7ea-60e35ef678d2\">in one place.<\/a> My favourite bit of theirs on Libra is probably Brendan Greeley&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/ftalphaville.ft.com\/2019\/06\/19\/1560920406000\/Facebook-s-Libra-will-not-help-the-unbanked\/\">detailed demolition<\/a> of the stupid idea that Libra \u2014 or Bitcoin \u2014 will do a damn thing to &#8220;bank the unbanked.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">tbf, I&#39;ve had chats with bitcoin fanatics who don&#39;t believe that bank transfers in the UK take seconds, and that we very rarely use cash. Wright<\/a> \u2014 though they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.docdroid.net\/Thp2vZ4\/918-cv-80176-document-220.pdf\">didn&#8217;t come to a settlement.<\/a> Let&#8217;s see how things go on 28 June.<\/p>\n<p>The Mozilla Foundation released Firefox 67.0.3 to deal with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/mozilla-patches-firefox-zero-day-abused-in-the-wild\/\">zero-day security hole<\/a> \u2014 one that was actively being exploited. The hole was <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SecurityGuyPhil\/status\/1141466335592869888\">discovered by crypto exchange Coinbase,<\/a> when an attacker tried to use it to &#8220;spearphish&#8221; them \u2014 targeting particular known individuals in the company.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Despite its best efforts. Malta isn\u2019t exactly emerging as the <a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/7468\/blockchain-crypto-island-caruana-galizia-malta\">civilized, sensible crypto capital<\/a> of the world.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>KodakOne (of KodakCoin) is still claiming to be doing things \u2014 a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globenewswire.com\/news-release\/2019\/06\/18\/1870393\/0\/en\/KODAKOne-and-Image-Protect-Sign-Partnership-Agreement-That-Is-Expected-to-Generate-Over-5-Million-Dollars-in-Infringement-Claims.html\">partnership agreement<\/a> that will <em>definitely<\/em> generate $5 million of infringement claims! The software has yet to be released.<\/p>\n<p>Reddit \/r\/bitcoin posters are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Bitcoin\/comments\/c38kip\/this_weeks_donald_duck_nl_is_about_bitcoin_and\/\">super excited<\/a> that this week&#8217;s Netherlands <a href=\"https:\/\/imgur.com\/a\/9oCGNff\">Donald Duck comic<\/a> is about Bitcoin! It turns out to be about Uncle Scrooge &#8220;digitalising&#8221; his paper money \u2014 the only mention of Bitcoin is some guy in a restaurant whose name is &#8220;Berend Bitcoin&#8221; \u2014 then losing it all when his electricity and Internet fails.
