From anarcho-capitalism and replacing the <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/the-conspiracist-gold-bug-economics-of-bitcoin\/\">International Bankers,<\/a> to stablecoins and institutional investors.<\/p>\n<p>Because <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2019\/05\/18\/number-go-down-the-single-trade-that-crashed-bitcoin\/\">&#8220;NUMBER GO UP&#8221;<\/a> is the only consistent Bitcoin ideology.<\/p>\n<p>The phrase &#8220;number go up&#8221; \u2014 without a &#8220;the,&#8221; for ungrammatical effect \u2014 has long been used wherever <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Goodhart%27s_law\">Goodhart&#8217;s law<\/a> applies \u2014 &#8220;When a measure becomes a target, it ceases to be a good measure.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But who first applied &#8220;number go up&#8221; to cryptocurrency?<\/p>\n<p>This came up in a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/davidgerard\/status\/1133079672085000192\">Twitter discussion today,<\/a> when it was mentioned by Chris DeRose. So I went looking.<\/p>\n<p>The earliest &#8220;number go up&#8221; I&#8217;ve found in crypto discussion is from SomethingAwful \u2014 not the Buttcoin thread, but one of the other SomethingAwful crypto threads at the time \u2014 in a <a href=\"https:\/\/forums.somethingawful.com\/showthread.php?threadid=3811209&amp;pagenumber=33&amp;perpage=40#post477092766\">comment<\/a> by user Blade Runner, on 5 October 2017 (<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20190527190014\/https:\/\/forums.somethingawful.com\/showthread.php?threadid=3811209&amp;pagenumber=33&amp;perpage=40#post477092766\">archive<\/a>), as the crypto bubble was in full swing:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It&#8217;s legitimately amusing to see a Ham shoe shine boy incessantly screeching with no knowledge of how Buttcoin works beyond &#8220;NUMBER GO UP, ME COULD HAVE HAD BIG NUMBER, GOON BAD&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>There are many reasons that it&#8217;s a terrible investment, and these have been explained over and over again, and yet the man continues to screech while pointing at an imaginary number inflated by ridiculous amounts of margin trading on an exchange that can&#8217;t be withdrawn from<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It was promptly adopted both on that thread and the main Buttcoin thread.
