The idea is that you can give this to creators whose stuff you like.<\/p>\n<p>This caused some slight problems just before Christmas \u2014 when the browser was caught presenting &#8220;support this site&#8221; banners for creators who weren&#8217;t signed up for BAT at all. Amy Castor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theblockcrypto.com\/2018\/12\/24\/brave-browser-is-collecting-donations-on-your-behalf-did-you-know\/\">wrote up the story<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20181224164623\/https:\/\/www.theblockcrypto.com\/2018\/12\/24\/brave-browser-is-collecting-donations-on-your-behalf-did-you-know\/\">archive<\/a>) for The Block.<\/p>\n<p>British YouTuber <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tomscott.com\/\">Tom Scott<\/a> was <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/galkowski_t\/status\/1074703403274698763\">asked<\/a> if he was getting his BAT donations \u2014 and Tom was <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tomscott\/status\/1076436029387821056\">not pleased in the slightest<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 &#8220;it&#8217;s about &#8216;passing off&#8217;, claiming you represent someone when you don&#8217;t.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2019\/01\/13\/brave-web-browser-no-longer-claims-to-fundraise-on-behalf-of-others-so-thats-nice\/tomscott-tweet-20181221\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-15682\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-15682\" src=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/tomscott-tweet-20181221.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"386\" srcset=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/tomscott-tweet-20181221.png 634w, https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/tomscott-tweet-20181221-300x290.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><small><em> So if you thought you&#8217;d donated to me through Brave, the money (or their pseudo-money) will not reach me, and Brave&#8217;s terms say they may choose to just keep it themselves. It looks like they&#8217;re &#8216;providing this service&#8217; for every creator on every platform. Any reasonable person would call this &#8220;passing off&#8221; \u2014 it&#8217;s got the creator&#8217;s name and photo, and the direct claim &#8220;You can support this site by sending a tip&#8221;:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2019\/01\/13\/brave-web-browser-no-longer-claims-to-fundraise-on-behalf-of-others-so-thats-nice\/brave-tom-scott-donation-page-december-2018\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-11725\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-11725\" src=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/brave-tom-scott-donation-page-december-2018.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/brave-tom-scott-donation-page-december-2018.png 2048w, https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/brave-tom-scott-donation-page-december-2018-300x214.png 300w, https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/brave-tom-scott-donation-page-december-2018-768x547.png 768w, https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/brave-tom-scott-donation-page-december-2018-1024x729.png 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Quite a lot of Twitter objected to what was, to all appearances, blatant fraud.<\/p>\n<p>After Brave founder Brendan Eich had spent about five days on Twitter berating his many objectors with allusions to <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20190113222047\/https:\/\/twitter.com\/BrendanEich\/status\/1077103268776431616\">Plato<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20190113222000\/https:\/twitter.com\/BrendanEich\/status\/1077095108758036481\">Hume<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20181221205958\/https:\/\/twitter.com\/BrendanEich\/status\/1074838081268736001\">Nietzsche<\/a> \u2014 &#8220;In short run, without sounding Nietzschean, will matters. Patreon\u2019s is weak or corrupt. Ours is not.&#8221; \u2014 he conceded they would probably have to change the wording.<\/p>\n<p>So, Brave version <a href=\"https:\/\/community.brave.com\/t\/release-channel-update-0-58-21-is-live\/42200\">0.58.21<\/a> came out yesterday! I installed it in a clean <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/software-download\/windows10ISO\">Windows 10 VM<\/a> to see what it does now.<\/p>\n<p>You can ask the browser for 35 BATs to start you off \u2014 go to the hamburger menu, then &#8220;Brave Rewards.&#8221; To give BATs to people, you click the little triangle icon in the address bar.<\/p>\n<p>(You can hypothetically <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coinbase.com\/price\/basic-attention-token\">sell BATs on Coinbase,<\/a> but I don&#8217;t think you can get these ones out of the browser.)<\/p>\n<p>I tried a couple of YouTube channels \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/user\/reddragdiva\">mine,<\/a> which is not signed up for BATs, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/user\/DavidHaydotOrg\">David Hay<\/a>&#8216;s, which is.
