{"id":10741,"date":"2018-11-08T22:30:30","date_gmt":"2018-11-08T22:30:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/?p=10741"},"modified":"2018-11-11T21:00:11","modified_gmt":"2018-11-11T21:00:11","slug":"news-sec-busts-etherdelta-swift-not-using-ripplenet-another-galts-gulch-scam-craig-wright-claims-to-be-satoshi-again","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2018\/11\/08\/news-sec-busts-etherdelta-swift-not-using-ripplenet-another-galts-gulch-scam-craig-wright-claims-to-be-satoshi-again\/","title":{"rendered":"News: SEC busts EtherDelta, SWIFT not using RippleNet, another Galt&#8217;s Gulch scam, Craig Wright claims to be Satoshi again"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Well, this was an incredibly obvious thing that was going to happen \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sec.gov\/news\/press-release\/2018-258\">SEC Charges EtherDelta Founder With Operating an Unregistered Exchange.<\/a> EtherDelta facilitated trade in <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/icos-magic-beans-and-bubble-machines\/\">ERC-20 tokens,<\/a> many of which are almost certainly securities, in the period Zack Coburn owned it (November 2016 to December 2017). Here&#8217;s the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sec.gov\/litigation\/admin\/2018\/34-84553.pdf\">admin order<\/a> \u2014 Coburn has paid a $388,000 penalty and promised to be good and helpful henceforth. And here I was <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2017\/09\/28\/etherdelta-hack-malicious-javascript-in-a-contract-name-stealing-the-users-key\/\">thinking it would be FinCEN<\/a> who would nail him for not doing KYC &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>The SEC says that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/sec-official-says-plain-english-guidance-on-icos-is-coming\/\">plain-English guidance on ICOs is coming<\/a> \u2014 evidently quite a few prospective ICO promoters <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2018\/06\/14\/topline-comms-how-to-launch-a-successful-ico-with-me-on-the-panel\/\">did the sensible thing<\/a> and gave them a call.<\/p>\n<p>800% is an impressive-sounding risk factor for crypto assets! But it&#8217;s not amazing \u2014 in Switzerland, the Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA) has told banks and dealers to assign crypto-assets a flat <a href=\"https:\/\/ftalphaville.ft.com\/2018\/11\/07\/1541566800000\/Capitalising-crypto\/\">risk-weighting of 800 per cent.<\/a> What this actually means is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/opinion\/articles\/2018-11-07\/research-analysts-analyze-data-now\">800% of 8%<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 that if a bank buys cryptos, they can only pay 36% from debt, and the other 64% has to be equity capital \u2014 so cryptos are risky, but not 100% risky or 800% risky. The risk-weighting is to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.davispolk.com\/files\/u.s.basel_.iii_.final_.rule_.visual.memo_.pdf\">keep the banks stable<\/a> It&#8217;s abstruse, but not very weird.<\/p>\n<p>The Marshall Islands&#8217; plan for a SOV cryptocurrency have prompted a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2018\/nov\/06\/plans-for-digital-currency-spark-political-crisis-in-marshall-islands\">no-confidence vote<\/a> in the president, who was pushing the scheme.<\/p>\n<p>In Bulgaria, creative Bitcoin entrepreneurial innovators fall afoul of tedious regulator oppression when evidence that they were <a href=\"https:\/\/bitcoinist.com\/bulgarian-officials-caught-accepting-bitcoin-bribes-to-issue-passports\/\">taking bribes in bitcoins to issue Bulgarian passports<\/a> is found on a permanent immutable ledger.<\/p>\n<p>A new <a href=\"http:\/\/fortune.com\/2018\/11\/07\/blockchain-vs-dlt\/\">Forrester report says<\/a> that the shine is off the world &#8220;blockchain,&#8221; that a &#8220;blockchain winter&#8221; for funding is coming \u2014 analogous to the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/AI_winter\">AI winter<\/a> of the 1980s, when the wheels came off that hype \u2014 and you should say &#8220;distributed ledger technology&#8221; instead. Which means it&#8217;s time to find <em>yet another<\/em> backup euphemism to attach the same fabulous promises to. And me telling you that just cost you a lot less than the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forrester.com\/report\/Predictions+2019+Distributed+Ledger+Technology\/-\/E-RES144635?utm_source=fortune&amp;utm_medium=pr&amp;utm_campaign=predictions_2019&amp;content=blockchain\">$499<\/a> that Forrester is charging.<\/p>\n<p>No, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.financemagnates.com\/cryptocurrency\/news\/exclusive-swift-denies-integration-rumours-with-ripplenet\/\">SWIFT will not be integrating with RippleNet,<\/a> despite rumours spreading amongst XRP holders.<\/p>\n<p>B2C2, a UK-based crypto firm, was doing multi-million dollar bitcoin deals in 2017. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theblockcrypto.com\/2018\/11\/05\/from-50m-bitcoin-deals-to-almost-selling-for-50m-at-the-market-bottom-the-story-of-b2c2\/\">Then the bubble popped.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Bitfinex\/Tether&#8217;s bank in the Bahamas, Deltec, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/deltec-chairman-says-tether-letter-on-bank-relationship-is-authentic\/\">has confirmed the Tether letter is authentic.<\/a> Coincidentally, Deltec is having a spot of bother with US authorities over the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tribune242.com\/news\/2018\/nov\/05\/bahamas-bank-accounts-targeted-for-us-seizure\/\">proceeds of massive bribery.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Yet another <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Atlas_Shrugged\">Galt&#8217;s Gulch<\/a> But On The Blockchain plan turns out to have been straight-up fraud \u2014 it turns out Morgan Rockcoons didn&#8217;t actually <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sandiegouniontribune.com\/news\/courts\/sd-me-bitcointopia-20181104-story.html\">own the land he was selling for bitcoins<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20181107141734\/http:\/\/www.sandiegouniontribune.com\/news\/courts\/sd-me-bitcointopia-20181104-story.html\">archive<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>ICO scamception \u2014 ICO token Oyster PRL was exit-scammed by its founder, &#8220;Bruno Blocks&#8221;\u00a0\u2014 who nobody has ever met\u00a0\u2014 who took 3 million tokens via a <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/oysterprotocol\/oyster-update-b813390ce10e\">deliberately-maintained back door<\/a> in the smart contract code. <em>How does this keep happening?<\/em> Fortunately, the developers are on the case &#8230; by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Opacity\/comments\/9uo9be\/the_current_situation_is_somewhat_understandable\/\">printing 27 million new tokens for themselves.<\/a> By the way \u2014 one of the Oyster Pearl developers is also the technical guy on <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2018\/03\/24\/woolf-university-college-courses-literally-on-the-ethereum-blockchain\/\">Woolf University.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>A couple of unknown ERC-20 tokens that nobody&#8217;s trading, ODF and CKC by Omniscience Dedication Financial, were using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ccn.com\/this-ethereum-token-youve-never-heard-of-is-hogging-10-of-the-networks-gas\/\">10% of the public Ethereum blockchain&#8217;s gas<\/a> a couple of days ago.<\/p>\n<p>There can only be <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2017\/11\/20\/there-can-only-ever-be-21-million-forks-of-bitcoin-a-survey-so-far\/\">21 million forks of Bitcoin<\/a> \u2014 so <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2017\/09\/03\/the-bitcoin-versus-bitcoin-cash-split-what-it-means-and-what-you-should-do\/\">Bitcoin Cash<\/a> is doing the full-history fork thing, and Poloniex is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/early-trading-shows-clear-preference-in-divide-over-bitcoin-cash-hard-fork\/\">already trading<\/a> futures on the tokens. Bitcoin ABC (the current software) is the hot favourite, and Bitcoin SV (&#8220;Satoshi&#8217;s Vision,&#8221; backed by Craig Wright) is not.
