I don&#8217;t <em>remember<\/em> swearing in my quote \u2014 but if Jemima does, then I guess it&#8217;s on the blockchain now.<\/p>\n<p>(I did yet another interview yesterday about blockchains in journalism. Blockchain is not a <em>saviour<\/em> of journalism, it&#8217;s a <em>subject<\/em> for journalism\u00a0\u2014 desperate people, rescuers promising magic-based solutions, scams, fraud, victims &#8230;)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">You are missing the meta-purpose. The download updated Flash correctly \u2014 but also installed the miner.<\/p>\n<p>A woman put CDN$62,500 in a Bitcoin ATM to send bitcoins to a phone scammer. Prince Edward Island provincial court judge Nancy Orr <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/prince-edward-island\/pei-bitcoin-scam-1.4860187\">has ruled<\/a> that Instacoin, the company who ran the machine, is not responsible, and gets to keep the cash.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/theblockcrypto.com\/tiny\/bitfinex-suspends-all-fiat-deposits\/\">All fiat deposits to Bitfinex have been suspended<\/a> &#8230; after it came out that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theblockcrypto.com\/2018\/10\/06\/bitfinex-moves-its-banking-relationship-to-hsbc\/\">they&#8217;d been using HSBC,<\/a> who seem to have promptly dropped them. Tether&#8217;s trading volume is also right down, and the dollar peg on exchanges with a USDT\/USD pair is slipping.<\/p>\n<p>Coinbase is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theblockcrypto.com\/2018\/10\/11\/coinbase-is-shutting-down-its-fund-aimed-at-big-investors-as-it-pivots-to-a-new-retail-product\/\">shutting down its institutional crypto index fund,<\/a> due to &#8220;lack of interest.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Bitcoin&#8217;s first sidechain, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/liquid-goes-live-blockstreams-first-bitcoin-sidechain-has-finally-arrived\/\">Liquid, is finally active! <\/a>Its function is to supply liquidity between exchanges \u2014 using a trust-based closed network. Because Bitcoin can only scale by not using Bitcoin. &#8220;An exchange converts its bitcoin into &#8216;LBTC&#8217; \u2013 the liquid bitcoin token \u2013 which is pegged to actual bitcoin. Once sent there, exchanges can move money around securely and much more quickly than on the main bitcoin chain.&#8221; They also plan to run other financial instruments as tokens over this network. The obvious next step is to stop using the Bitcoin network itself for any of this. Frances Coppola details how <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/francescoppola\/2018\/10\/11\/blockstreams-new-solution-to-bitcoins-liquidity-problem-looks-oddly-familiar\/\">this reimplements the interbank market<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 crypto recreates the existing financial system, but badly.<\/p>\n<p>Today&#8217;s astounding project that is much less than it appears \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/1414433\/perlin-is-a-new-crypto-linked-cloud-computing-service-challenging-amazon-web-services\/\">Perlin<\/a> aims to provide cloud computing, but on Android devices belonging to individuals in less-developed countries. This is not what I&#8217;d call a convincing pitch. The <a href=\"https:\/\/icodrops.com\/perlin\/\">ICO<\/a> hasn&#8217;t started. Nor is there third-party evidence of the claimed investments from Bitmain and Michael Arrington, let alone details as to what this backing constitutes. The interesting bit is that Perlin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.perlin.net\/\">claims<\/a> to use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/emin-gun-sirer-unveils-simple-yet-powerful-consensus-protocol\/\">Avalanche,<\/a> the new <a href=\"https:\/\/davidgerard.co.uk\/blockchain\/2018\/06\/01\/the-mathcoins-decentralised-cryptocurrency-without-the-blockchain\/\">not-a-blockchain<\/a> family of protocols that Emin G\u00fcn Sirer is developing. But Sirer&#8217;s team isn&#8217;t involved \u2014 Perlin took the Avalanche family white paper and say they&#8217;re making <a href=\"https:\/\/ipfs.io\/ipfs\/QmXNJXNtxFDg5vwBiXuDSUGpfatakock1qJzQkNujzrP37\">something a bit like it, sort of.<\/a> Here&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/perlin-network\">the code.<\/a> (HT Amy Castor, who passed on covering this press release.)<\/p>\n<p>How hyperbolic crypto press coverage is generated.
